Canadian Mountain Passes Route Information:
Canada's first transcontinental railway through the dramatic Rocky Mountains comes to life in this beautiful new route for Train Simulator, featuring imposing mountain passes, steep gradients and famous spiral tunnels.
The Canadian Pacific Railway (CPR) was originally built between British Columbia and Eastern Canada in the 1880s, fulfilling a promise extended to British Columbia when it became part of the Canadian Confederation in 1871. The route was originally planned to run further north than where it was eventually built, primarily to prevent American railroads running through Canada. However, this presented engineers with a challenging project to navigate steep gradients and imposing mountain passes.
The CPR was completed in 1885 but as traffic grew, the 4.5% grades of Kicking Horse Pass, west of Calgary, became unmanageable, as well as heavy avalanches that constantly disrupted operations along the line. As a result, a series of tunnels were built through the mountains and, using the famous Gotthard line in Switzerland as their inspiration, CPR's engineers constructed a number of spiral tunnels to reduce the steep grades along the line.
Today, the modern-day 155 mile (250km) route for Train Simulator between Revelstoke and Lake Louise, through the imposing Rocky Mountains, is part of the busy transcontinental railway that sees almost exclusively a busy mix of freight traffic, including coal, potash, sulphur, grain, manifest freight and double stack container wagons. Scheduled passenger trains on the route were discontinued in 1991, but during the summer, the line sees the Rocky Mountaineer tourist train.
The Canadian Mountain Passes route for Train Simulator begins 10 miles east of Lake Louise at Eldon and follows the Bow River to Morant's Curve, a famous location for railfans and photographers. At Lake Louise, the track splits and runs on grades up to 1.8% to Stephen, at the summit of Kicking Horse Pass.
As the line descends to Golden, the first of the route's famous spiral tunnels is navigated, descending on a much gentler 2.2% grade than the original line carried. Just south of Golden, the main yard sees busy coal traffic load and unload daily, with double tracks from Golden to Revelstoke to accommodate the constant flow of heavy coal traffic.
For a short distance, the line follows the Columbia River as it flows northwards through the Rocky Mountain Trench -- engineers get brief respite on this flat section of the route, before the line turns away at Beavermouth and starts the climb up Rogers Pass. This climb features some of the route's most spectacular scenery, including the Stone Creek Trestle Bridge, a favourite spot for photographers, Connaught Tunnel and the nine-mile (15km) long Mount MacDonald Tunnel.
Included with the route is the GE ES44AC diesel locomotive in Canadian Pacific® livery, which features new air braking with adjustable difficulty offering more realistic behaviour for heavy freight trains than ever before -- bringing a 10,000t freight train down a 2.2% grade has never been more challenging in Train Simulator! Also included are a number of loaded and unloaded freight cars, including an Auto Rack, Coal Hopper, Gondola Car, Container Double Stack Car, Grain Hopper, 50ft Box Car, Double Door Box Car, 4-Chute Covered Hopper, Potash Car and Tank Car.
Developed by Milepost Simulations, Canadian Mountain Passes: Revelstoke-Lake Louise is a stunning route through the beautiful and famous Rocky Mountains, that will challenge even the most experienced of engineers with its steep gradients and heavy freight loads.

I was pleasantly surprised at the realism of the route. ...the bridge at illecillewaet siding 10:24 is a great place to take pictures of the trains coming across the bridge.

I live an hour's drive from Golden Yard and they mostly get CP and CN. They get the odd Union Pacific units. The traffic I get through my town ends up in golden and it's usually Coal units and some mixed units and usually service the local saw and pulp mills we have through here I live in the Windermere Subdivision area of CP.

The Field station has been boarded up and closed; it's still there, but not in use. Lake Louise still gets passenger traffic from any special runs by CP (RCP) or Rocky Mountain Rail (same with Banff)

Wow, that route is just gorgeus. Even though I'm more a fan of German routes, I seriously consider getting this. The landscape is just great. I guess that's typical for Canada. :) Thanks for the vid, got a positive thumb from me. :) Greets, Albert

The spiral tunnels are probably the most interesting. I watched a train from the viewpoint above the lower tunnel entrance, it went in and a few mins later it popped out on the back side of the mountain and came around again to hit the upper tunnel above the highway, this simulation is almost dead on as far as the spiral tunnel goes

@ David Sarkar - Can't reply to your Comment directly [no Reply button], but to answer your Questions, read below. 1 - The switch of the Trains is not something you can do, it's just Video Editing. 2 - Lake Louise is seen at the end of the Video at 45:50 . The Line ends after the CP Train leaves Golden Yard, and the CSX heads back onto the Main Line to continue to Lake Louise. 3 - I switched Trains cause I was trying to find ways to show all Lines on the Route in a seamless manner. This was the first Time Lapse I tried something like this, but I ended up going for another approach that shows the other Lines through a separate Window on the screen, such as this - kzread.info/dash/bejne/eWmNktGbaMjeZZM.html - Hope that answers your Questions. =]

great video! so i am thinking about purchasing this route for train simulator, and i have a question. there are some long tunnels that i saw in this video, is it possible to run a steam locomotive through these tunnels without having the train quit working because of the smoke build up in the tunnel? your answer would be of much help. thanks!

thank you for your response. i did figure out how to get steam engines through long tunnels a little while ago. i just dont open the firebox door while in the tunnel, that way the oxygen in the tunnel doesnt run out. which was the problem i was having in the past.

So I have a few questions. 1. How come you switch trains at 29:30? Is that something you can do or the game does it for you? 2. I thought the route ends at Lake Louise, does the CP train that you abandon continue onto that? 3. Any specific reason you switched trains instead of continuing on with the CP train? Thanks.

I've only driven the highway that parallels the tracks but from what I can tell it's as close to perfect as you can get in a computer game. The distance might be off a bit but not by much. 48 minutes x 4 equals about 3 hrs and 10 minutes which seems to be a little short considering the trains crawl up the grade out of Field and through the spiral tunnels.

***** Hey, cheers for the Comment =] I wouldn't know myself how accurate it is, but have seen many say that it's pretty spot on. As for your calculations, although they are right, but for the Video I didn't stick to the Speed Limit [quicker to get these things recorded], so the total time for the Drive is a lot longer than what I did. I can't remember off the top of my head though, and currently don't have this Route installed. =]I'm looking to go to Canada and Alaska in a few years, and I'm definitely gonna be checking out this place for sure. Looks like my cup of Tea for admiring scenery!

EmissionGaming Ok because if I remember correctly it's around 2 - 2.5 hours to drive from Revelstoke to Banff so it makes sense now. It's well worth the trip for sure. There is a viewpoint on the highway of the lower spiral tunnel and it's pretty cool to watch the trains.

  • @AllenFoto

Hmm, only thing I could really suggest is maybe trying to Verify the Cache, as sometimes through installation Files will tend to get corrupted [more so with DTG Content]. Right Click on Train Sim in your Steam Library > Properties > Local Files > Verify Integrity of Game Files. This will do a check for all Files, and reinstall any damaged Files.

MrComhacks Check that your "TSX Mode" is Enabled because it is designed to work with the Special Lighting Effects. If it already was, then also check that the Graphical Settings are not set to Low, which could also cause weird glitches as you describe. If they Fail to work, then my last thing I could suggest is to try Verifying the Cache. To do this: - Right Click "Train Simulator 2014" in the Steam Library - Go to "Properties" - Click on the Tab "Local Files" - Click on "Verify Integrity of Game Cache" Hope that helps.

This DLC doesn't do the route justice, it's probably just hampered by the crappy graphics engine that TS still uses. I've seen freeware routes that look better than this. Look up 'Felberpass V2' and you'll see what I mean.
