Can You Tell Them Apart? - UK’s Only Identical Quadruplets | Four of a Kind | Full Documentary

Subscribe for more: bit.ly/3n9DeoL
Have you ever had to write your child’s initials on them to remember which one was which?
The Carles’ household is home to four girls who are 4 of a kind but who also beat the odds of 64 million to one to survive. Ellie, Georgina, Jessica and Holly are Britain’s only identical quadruplets and their mum Julie was only the 27th woman in the world to conceive monochorionic quads naturally. The girls are so alike that for the first year Julie and her husband Jose had to write the babies’ initials on their feet in permanent marker to tell them apart, and Jose sometimes still struggles to know who is who… it probably doesn’t help that Mum dresses them all the same.
Until now, the girls didn’t have much contact with life outside of their family. They are all each other’s best friends and work like a little mischief making machine, an inseparable unit working as one. But that’s all about to change as the girls start their first year of primary school.
This documentary will follow their journey during their first year at school as they cause a lot of confusion and sometimes hostility wherever they go. With identical strawberry blonde corkscrew curls, the same faces and heights - they are impossible to tell apart and people often stare and ask some quite blunt questions about what it’s like to bring up four of a kind. This documentary will aim to answer these questions and also give insight into the uniqueness of identical quadruples. How identical are they really?

I am a twin. Definitely let them express their individuality sooner rather than later. Dress them the same only if they choose, but encourage dressing differently. Put them in separate classes if you can. I separated from my twin in high school. Realized I never made friends. Friends always came to me bc I was a twin and it was fascinating. Alone in high school, I wasn't a twin. People didn't know so people didn't come to me. I fell into a depression and high school is the worst time for that. Dropped out. So please, give them opportunities to navigate the world alone. It will help them in the long run.

I can relate to that, I’m a triplet (not identical) and i was in the same class as my sister until i went to a different university than her. Since i always had her by my side, i never bothered learning how to make friends or how to be independent. I’m managing now, but it has been tough. As an introvert, i don’t really mind being alone though

I am also a twin and i can definitely relate to you. From grade school to senior highschool, we were inseparable. Until i got into college, I realized that people do actually just put some interest on you sometimes because you're a twin and they find it amazing or unique. I had trouble establishing the person i want to be known, as myself and not as someone who have a twin. Today, we're in different courses, she's in engineering and i'm on biology. we're kinda similar but we're different and glad that people are slowly realizing that and i actually feel good now

I can imagine being separated would be traumatic after always being together and you always having your twin could be socially stunting. And well it does eventually have to happen as your seperate people who need to be independent and have your own lives so encouraging that early on is likely better... Your experience likely needs to be shared more by multiples as every set of twins I can think of was dressed exactly alike and in same classes and activities etc all the time

I made a comment to someone else about a friend I had in middle school/8th grade. She was new to our class and she joined my project that the class was working on. I knew she had a sister, but can't remember if I knew early on that they were twins. One day I was in the library and I heard Donna's voice and turned around to see *Donna* but after a split second I realized it _wasn't_ Donna but her twin sister. It even surprised me that 1. their voices were identical (obvious afterwards but at the time it was interesting) and 2. I realized that Debbie wasn't Donna after not a long time at all (I grew up reading the Sweet Valley High books and always wondered how the kids that new the identical twin characters knew they kids were different when their parents and older brother would still confuse them).

A friend of mine has twins. She was advised from the start by pediatricians to give each of them their own life. They were always dressed differently. They were going to different classes at school. Now they have chosen different facilities at the university. They are different. Also the mother always politely asked people not to call them "twins", but only by names.

As an identical twin, I heard lots of similarities and lots of differences. My mother was aware of twins that didn't differentiate and she made a conscious effort to encourage our own personalities. Despite this, many people referred to us as "the twins", as if we were one person. However, our connections even astound us...they are a force of nature. I tell other people that, without a twin, you may think you're the captain of your own ship but, when you're a twin, you wonder. So fascinating!!!

You do realize every small thing impacts EVERY child? It's just not as visible in others, but here it's extremely obvious because there's only one difference singled out. You should bring up your children to be good people, not to be 'the exact same'. Differences are good as long as they're healthy ones.

I mean it’s most likely easier and then no fighting over “I want to wear this” “I want to wear the shirt she has on” etc. For one child sure let them have their own closet wear whatever they want but with 4 kids and they all share a room and have different styles I couldn’t even imagine. As they get older then sure let them do as they please and most people grow out of dressing their kids the same because it just stops being cute after a while.

So Lia the one that went in the afternoon really struggled with math and had to do the special exams to not lose the semester so her sister would take her place and do the exam for her bc she was good at maths lol

@Dora Clement I imagine that once the girls start striving for further independence that includes their wardrobe, their parents will support their differences. They might still end up borrowing eachothers stuff though, as siblings tend to do. 🤣 young children dont usually give much fuss to their clothes tbh, there are a few that do, but generally before a certain age you wear what someone puts on you or sets on your bed for you.

Yeah, I see both sides of it. I think when they’re so young it’s better to keep everything identical so they don’t get confused and wonder why they’re being treated so differently, and as they get older you start letting them realize it’s okay for them to do different things and be different on their own (like this amazing mum did)

I think we like to make identical siblings appear similar in every way besides their looks. This suppresses their individuality, and the more people around them dismiss them as one, the more they fight those similarities and, unfortunately their bond as well. You'll find that normal siblings are often more at peace with their bond and would actually not mind entering new phases of their lives like college together. They wouldn't really strive to be apart as is sometimes the case with identicals.
