It took him 8 minutes to sink to that point, and george's advice of laying flat probably works in the first 2. If you lay down flat and try to float the moment you see you start sinking, you should be mostly fine. The reason you sink is because your whole body weight is on your feet; by laying flat you're multiplying the area by well over a dozen times while keeping the same mass.

@@ckobo84 No, they just wouldn't have been able to get him out. It's like a Chinese Finger Trap, trying to just pull on him makes the sand around his legs cling tighter. Flooding the sand makes it break up, so it's not all gripping onto his body as he sinks deeper.
Natural selection dictates that if someone stands in quicksand for 8 minutes before realizing they were stuck.. It was probably their time.

@frankaliberti

@@Jay-el9izQuicksand is more dense than air. So the fact that you’re always breathing means your torso will always be above the sand. Plus, all you have to do is move one led out while the other is static. Then repeat the process with the other leg. Quicksand is a silly thing.
I think me and my cousins came across really slow acting quick sand. The tide was out and we wanted to get to this small island in a bay that we always wanted to explore. Half way there our feet kept getting stuck in the sand and we could pull them out but our other foot would sink faster. There was no where to stand that was solid. We ended up getting really muddy and covered in wet sand. My main concern was my parents getting mad at me for getting my clothes all covered in wet sand. ( We would lean forward on the beach or fall over cuz we lost our balance, that's how the sand got on our clothes) Anyway we gave up on the island and just returned to shore but if that sand was any looser we could have ended up in proper quick sand.

I once stepped on a patch of quicksand walking across a beach like that. It was a fair way out, too, so nobody within shouting distance, which could have gotten me into a really ugly pickle. Luckily, I had good reflexes: as soon as I felt my foot not meeting the expected resistance on the ground while taking a step, I shifted my weight to the back foot and got away without trouble. It felt a bit like missing a step, so it does wake you up to the situation and gets your reflexes going quite quickly, but I was lucky to notice the lack of firm ground while my weight was still balanced between both legs.

I’ve lost a boot to sand like this, but I had the sense to not stand in one spot while I marveled at how I was sinking.
It happened to me on a lake coast in Shikoku (Japan). There is this area of the coast that looks more like a swamp and I had to cross it to reach the other side but about half the way I was sinking in quicksand. Luckily there were some rocks nearby. Me getting in toxic relationship while my best friend watches me sink only to be rescued and saying “cheers , boys - that is most horrendous thing I have done in my life”
While a rather horrifying prospect to encounter irl, it's quite fascinating to watch and have what happens explained (far as I know I have seen an escape video before, pretty much what the guy said about laying down to increase your footprint, but I don't think they explained what exactly happens with the water displacement are all that)
I've been in quick sand before. I thought it was pretty fun. When I got out, the supervisor with me told me that I was actually in extreme danger . Oops

My buddy got his dirt bike stuck in quick sand in Moab Utah… the only thing that remained visible was the handle bars. It was both hilarious and hilarious at the same time.
I knew of a young 15 or 16 year old lad who got trapped in quicksand on the coast near where I lived in UK. By the time the rescue services reached him it was up passed his chest. They couldn't get him out and as he could hardly breath they gave him oxygen until he was submerged. It shook me up thinking about that poor young terrified kid.

Madara Ryuzaki Uhh... Animals arent over harvesting the oceans, leaking oil everywhere, and generaly just making asses of themselves like we are. When a particular species overpopulates, nature corrects and reigns it in. We've neutralized most natural influences that would do that, and we're clearly not intelligent enough to curb rampant breeding on our own... So...

Panic can lead to death, but it's such a drawn out process. The way quicksand works is like a vacuum and it does take time. If you instantly sank into it super fast, then there's likely a lot of water and it would be easier to get out.
British person’s first reaction to being swallowed by quicksand: “I appear to be sinking”.

Who's here because of Bert? 😅
i got myself into quicksand once when i was around 10, but lucky i was light and i didn't sink too deep, and i thank god that my mom buys me every book i want, which include an outdoor survival book, so i laid on my chest and pull myself out, but i lost one shoe(could have digged it out but i was so scared i couldn't run away from that place quick enough let alone digging the shoe lol). Anyway it was scary, then i told my mom about it, and nobody believes me that i pulled myself out of quicksand. All i say is that i was very light in weight, and i didn't wiggle my legs too much, cuz the more u wiggle faster you'll sink.

How to Escape a quicksand. 1-Don’t panic, stretch your arms to maximum and place it on semi fluidic surface to increase your surface area. 2-Don’t stand at 90 degree, tilt your body forward so that your chest starts touching semi fluidic surface. 3-Try to take one leg out of mud, minimise the use of hands and arm, start pushing mud back with your foot, it will help you take other foot out as well. 4-Push the mud back and grab the solid surface with your hands and pull yourself out. Thank You.

If your boots laces are tied tight, then hard to pull foot out. Even prepared people get stuck. Areas with high tides in norway or alaska have danger areas also.
