Why would some one want to put a longer shock in their frame? As seems clear from Doddy's response, surely you'd mess with the geo of a well engineered bike.

#askgmbntech Hi Doddy!!! thanks for teaching us so much. I have a question ref. freestyle bmx bikes. I have seen some time ago that when doing stunts, some bikers don't need to backpedal when they are going backwards... what kind of sorcery have they done to their hubs? thanks again!

Another sick video, loved the thumbnail! 😂
when i saw the thumbnail all i *T H O T* to myself was "that's quite big"
As an Alaskan winter rider, I've seen people reduce wheel size and increase tire size for a much larger contact patch for more float in the snow. If the guy is going to go to a taller 27.5 or even a 27.5+ tire, his bike handling characteristics may end up fairly neutral and he gains the benefits of more air volume allowing him to run lower pressures for more float/patch.
F'n awesome Doddy......as per usual. Really good this time though....!!
Love your manner of speech, Doddy!
A carbon seatpost on a hardtail is a GREAT upgrade, as it eliminates a lot of the shock and vibrations coming up from the back wheel!

Time to get a dropper.
thanks for giving such a thorough answer to something i've been wondering about for a long time! Shame i cant just give it another 10mm travel. Guess ill have to get myself some spacers and see if that helps
Rule of thumb: if your eye-to-eye is too long, deduct the difference from the new stroke. You can also always use offset bushings, a max of 6mm per bushing. Also - don't assume MTB frames are super accurate in design down to the millimeter, there is some fudge factor in your favor.
Thanks Doctor Doddy.
Get a breezer supercell frame. Install 27.5 wheels, a 140 to 160mm 29er fork and you now have a burley trail bike thats super fun to ride on the cheap. 120 rear and 160 up front with flat handle bars. Sounds dumb but it all works out and its super fun, cheap and not very expensive.
Love the background music, I don’t know if it’s new but haven’t heard it before. Great touch!
To answer the last guy there, it sounds like you have set your sag and found you were bottoming out so have countered it with more air and are now running a lower sag. I'd definitely go for volume spacers and keep the sag between 25-35%. Countering bottoming out with more air just makes the back end stiffer. You've got a damn good bike there with some high-end suspension but you're not using it to its fullest. Defo spacers and correct sag.

Hey mate, that last question was mine 🙂 From memory I can't remember bottoming the rear shock out in full open mode. It may have come close with a few fast drops, however the O ring hasnt seen the very bottom of the shaft. Since emailing the gmbn team, I've dropped around 10psi out of what I normally would run and have been enjoying the extra plush that its provided, controlling that with the rebound the best I can. I guess at the time I emailed I was concerned that I may have been wearing out the dpx2 components alot quicker than normal due to what was required for me. I hammer along on the bike reasonably well, but I also understand what you said about not getting the full potential from it. I'm in the process of sourcing some volume spacers through the local bike shop and going from there. Cheers for your feedback Gaz & Doddy 🤘🤘

@@T40Z cool mate, no worries. The back end in my bike is uber progressive so even with no spacers and 35% sag it doesn't bottom out, but feels great.
Should have used a picture of a Foes for the 2:1 leverage ratio - Brent was the big advocate of 2:1 (versus the 3:1 or higher of most bikes). Tons of Foes bikes with 2:1 ratio. And, he did have a good point. The lower the leverage ratio the better off you are.
I took a 2016 trance 27.5 and dropped in a 157x2 shock, a 160 lyric with a 2 degree slacker works headset. Bike is so much fun to ride. Super supple. Looks good and fun as f to ride. If your American and buy used from canadians you get a currency discount. Picked up a xl frame for 300 and a 2016 lyrik for 300. Do the service ur self and score giant lol.
Yomoti: midnight. Gmbn you got good music taste.

feel so let down after seeing that thumbnail :(
Nice show!
Changing my aluminium bars to carbon made so much difference on my bike and reduced a lot of that nasty vibration that tired out my hands after a while.

Great vids keep them coming i have 2008 marzocchi drop out triple forks but i have no info on them i just trying to find out how much oil and air pressure i need to put in and also i wanted to add some spacers but their is nothing in them to add spacers too any ideas cheers

Howdy mate! I was looking for good dropper post, that's 27.2mm and I was thinking that you could help! Thanks!
Fox float rear shocks. During cold weather psi recommendation settings, adjusting at room temperature or at outside cold temperature?! Any affects?
#askgmbntech hi Doddy, just wondering what issues you see in running shorter travel than standard. The shock length is still the same as factory (210) but going from a 55 to a 50. Cheers
Hey Doddy, I got a question about rear Shox size. I’m thinking about to put a 230 x 60 Shox into my slash. That would give it nearly 160mm. Then I would also put a 170mm fork in the front. So with this I should have nearly the same geometry except of the height of the bottom bracket, shouldn’t I? Trek Slash: Rear shock size 230 x 57,5 Travel: 150mm Fork: 160mm
ran a dh coil for a rip in the yard on my 160 travel intense slopesytle. with how frame was designed, it sat just fine. afterall the socom was just a slopestyle dh kitted
Any recommendations on a new shock for 2018 levo expert. Can I upgrade to a more travel shock? I have 135mm now. Thanks for your help!!
#askgmbntech Hey Doddy! I got a SID World Cup 15x100 fork with the OneLock remote installed from factory. is it possible to uninstall the OneLock remote and put on new top cap, or do i have to buy a new damper unit?
4:00 my linkage without a shock can travel 170mm counted in with a 38mm stroke its at 118mm so i can fit a 45mm stroke safely
How would reducing shock stroke affect my riding?
I am curious if you wanted more fork travel without messing with bb heights, if you could swap out for a dual crown fork on an enduro or am bike? Could you explain please?
On another yt channel they swapped a 165 for a 190mm. It changed the angles enough to make the shock extend instead of compress under load. He didnt even try riding it😂
Would it be feasible to put a reduced offset 29” fork in a bike designed around a 27.5” wheelsize. Specifically a 160mm 29” fork in a 2017 Stumpjumper 650B. Thinking of upgrading the fork, but would also like to future proof.
Hey mate . Awesome video and very interesting 🤙. Just wondering what the advantages are to upgrading to the 35 mm stem and handle bars ? I ride meloish enduro style trails 2-3 times a week and am buy no means a pro rider. Will I be able to notice any performance improvements or is it just that they look sick?

Hey GMBN, First I want to say I love the channel! Second, I have a 2016 Trek Slash 9.9 and I'm wanting to put a DHX2 shock on it. If I went from the standard 210x60, to the 210x55, how would that affect the travel? Thank you! !

Depends on the leverage ratio, Most bikes have it between 3:1 - 2.5:1. Assuming its 3:1, by shortening shock stroke by 5mm you're going to get aprox 15mm less travel, if the slash had 150mm rear travel with 60mm stroke, you're going to have around 135mm rear travel in the rear with 55mm stroke.
#askgmbntech Hello there, I ride a 26” 2014 ragley blue-pig and have really knocked my rear wheel out of shape, it is not really repairable so I’m on the lookout for a new wheel. My question is if I should build up a new wheel on the same 28 hole dtswiss hub or go for an all new wheel. The wheel should be as bombproof as possible, but also affordable so probably aluminium. Weight doesnt really matter too much. Thanks!
I have a (rather) cheap mtb, the eye to eye is only 150mm, seems kinda rare. Haven't found any damper with that measure. are there even any to upgrade the cheap one? Cheers
@GMBN tech I have a Norco fluid fs 2 my fork travel is 130mm and my rear shock travel is 120mm. I am looking to upgrade the amount of travel in both my fork and shock to around 150mm in the fork to 140mm in the rear shock so I was wondering if I was able to do it or not. My rear shock doesn't come with a lockout so that's one of the reasons why I want to upgrade it. But for a 140mm shock I don't know what measurements I need for the shock.
Hello I had a quick question and really need help. I have a vintage retro year 2000 GT full suspension mountain bike model XCR5000. It currently has the original rear shock ShockRST 22A, 4.6inch travel. Can I swap this out for something modern? Or is there a replacement for this type of shock? I can’t seem to find anything online for it. Any help would be appreciated. Thank you

i would like to know can i change my front suspension fork....it an old judy xlc double crown fork100 mm travel...probably from early 2000... i would like to have a bit more travel and a single crown...so it doesnt look to bulky.... is it ok.. or does it mess up everything about geometry.... bike is an stumpjumper fsr also from about 2005... tnx !!
I am planning to change the rear travel of my giant yukon fx, can you guys have any idea what is the compatible shock? Its 6.5 eye to eye and 1.5 stroke. What brand or specific rear shock fpr replacement?
My shock has 175mm eye to eye.. I can't find ANYTHING to replace it with. It is some vintage Rock Shox coupe deluxe 700x 1.5 ..super annoying
Hi. Is it possible to change front fork fox 40 from fox 36 in a enduro bike? Thanks
A little late, but from my understanding "eye 2 eye'" is from center 2 center. Possible top 2 top could be the same result. But top 2 bottom in this case could throw you of a few mm. Correct me if I am wrong please !
Hi, I’ve a lapierre overvolt 4.5 2020 and am wondering can I put long better quality shock to improve riding feel over roots and small drop offs. Its fitted with a lapieere 210x47.5. Can I change to a 210x55 and how best do I check wheel to frame clearance?
I ride a 2008 giant reign size medium, I'm 6ft with a 32 inch inside leg and I don't feel comfortable on it when I do any sort of jump ( it feels a bit small and cramped ) the rest of the time it feels ok do i need a 19 inch frame instead of my 18 inch.
No, measuring is from center of the eye, to the center of the other eye. Not as in the video. That can make 10mm difference. For the rest good video.
I have two Fox Dps extra volume rear shocks Both message the same Eye to eye. One has a shorter Air can but the damper body is longer, the others rear shock has a longer Air can but shorter damper body. What is de difference I don't get is one for more aggressive riding?
Hi Doddy! I own a 2019 Fox Float X2 and I was wondering if rear dampers have a "dead zone" of some sorts because I can't use the last ~7mm of stroke. Loving the show and greetings from Germany! #askgmbntech
#askgmbntech Im going to buy a new yt capra al. Should I take 27,5 or 29. I heard that 29" is faster but 27,5 takes better the corners and it is more fun. I'm not a racer so the time is not that important. Also the. 29" climbs better but are the differences that big? I'm actually riding 26" and I think 27,5 will be a lot of fun. Could you give me advice? Julien
Is eye to eye to the middle of the hole or the closest edges?
Hi doddy. Im deciding to switch fron hardtail to full suspension and i want to know the travel base on the metric system of a rear shock 7.875x2.5 inches/ 200x57mm. If this is a 150mm travel? #askgmbntech
Hi I have a Jamis Dakar and it’s a 2013 and I was going to switch the frame to a newer one is this possible or should I keep the old one
Does anyone know if you can change the hole direction that the bolts mount through ? Like twist it so the holes are facing the same or opposite direction?
#askgmbntech is it possible/easy to spec out a wheel and tire combo to get the same rolling diameter on both 27.5 and 29? Put short/skinny tires on the 29 for fast rolling days and big fat rubber on the 27.5 for big grip days, without changing the bike geometry, bb height, etc?
#askgmbntech Hey doddy, thx so much for all your expertise! I have a question concerning tubeless setup: does the bead of the tire has to "POP" into the rim? i have a new bike and wanted to convert to tubeless, just as i did with my 2 previous bikes. I can inflate the tubeless tire with a standard floor pump, but i just won't get the initial pop from the bead, no matter how much bars i put into it. It holds the air for 2 days now, but i'm concerned of rolling the tire of the rim when i ride it. Couldn't find help anywhere else online - so maybe you can(: cheers
#askGMBNTech I got 40mm rims and running 3.0 inch tyres. I like them, but I‘m thinking of changing to 2.6 inch tyres, so my question is: will they fit normally like on a thinner rim or will they be flat on the upper side ( so the area that’s rolling on the ground)? My english is not the best, so it’s difficult to explain, but I hope you can understand what I mean
#askgmbntech Hey doddy, i have a trek slash and the metric shock sizing is 230x57.5. i want to know if i can use a fox x2 with 230x60, there is some procedure to reduce the stroke of the shock?
#askgmbntech I have a Delux select + 190mm 45 mm and I was thinkin to change it to a 200mm and 57mm. I wonder if it might affect a lot? Or should I go for 190mm 51mm? Thanks and cheers!
so if ive got a 150mm rear travel shock and i want to upgrade it choose something with 150mm travel ?
#askgmbntech hi Doddy I have recently decided to build a dirt jump bike, could u explain the rear axels on them for horizontal drop outs, thanks
#askgmbntech I recently bought a new coil on my dh went from a 450 to 500 but I’ve bought a shorter coil than the original but the original shock says 3.25 and the one I have just bought is just 3 and the shock length is 3 will this cause a problem and would this coil have the same strength as a 500x3.25 as it’s 500x3 or are they equal

#askgmbntech Hi Doddy, I'm looking for a new bike and i'm strugling to decide wether to get a good frame and upgrade the components or get a better frame and keep the stuff thats on there.
#askgmbntech hai.. im using yt jeffsy 2017 al one . Hi, my bike has a 190x40mm rear shock, it's have clarance to put 190x45mm, but I think the 190x37.5mm has a 2.5mm spacer inside ( I hope ) so if it have it's possible cu cut it off and to covert cu 190x40mm. What do you think?
So a smaller stroke length with same eye to eye shouldn't be a problem then... just less travel ?
Can i use a 165mm of eye to eye on my frame with a 190mm of eye to eye?

OK, back to that first question - Since shocks were not really standardized across manufactures, what is the impact of as fairly small difference in eye-eye or stroke make? Let's say if you went from a 200mm x 55 to a 200mm x 57 or x 51 or going to a 210 or 195 eye-eye? This isn't because of "wanting to" but more a function of what is available in some brands/models of shocks. If you are trying to get as close as possible, which parameter do you sacrifice? A lot of Fox shocks are advertised in inches 7.875x2"or 2.25" which equates to a 200x51 or 200x57. If I originally had a 200x55, which one would be the better choice?

#askgmbntech I am looking to buy a downhill bike but I'm not sure about which size to get. I am 1.88m tall and currently riding a Nukeproof Mega 275 in size L. It has the standard stem (which is 50mm i think) and a reach of 470mm. The Bike I am looking to buy is a Commencal Furious which I'm mostly going to use for bikeparks, jumps, tricks and stuff. So the question is: Should I get a L size frame with a 440mm reach because maybe a downhill bike has to be a little bit smaller or should I get a XL frame with the same amount of reach as my enduro?
