Upgrading the rear shock on your mountain bikes is one of the best and most noticeable ways to change the feel and performance of your bike. When looking to upgrade your bike's rear shock, there are a few key elements to know and consider. Things like shock length, stroke, and eye to eye measurements are crucial to know before you make any kind of change. Also, consider if you want a coil shock or an air shock. Both have their advantages and disadvantages. Not to mention which brand to choose from - there are countless options from Fox, RockShox, Push, Cane Creek, and more. Sounds like a lot...it is. Thankfully, Jeff and Jared are here to explain everything you need to know about upgrading your MTB rear suspension. Get a notepad out because this episode is loaded with good information. Enjoy!

I got a shock recently when my wife left me - I consider this to be a substantial upgrade.

This is unbelievable ,I’m using hard tail and road bike, but I’m keep watching this two funny guy anyway thanks for your tips 🚴♂️🚴♂️🚴♂️
Blowing through travel and blowing minds🤯
One thing you should mention regarding shock fit/compatibility is that, in general, the orientation of the shock does not matter - either the front/back orientation or flipping it vertically. The dynamics are identical independent of the orientation. It may look a little odd, but you can fit some shocks with piggyback reservoirs in more bikes this way.
Coincidentally, I called with some of these questions on the same day this was posted and I can attest to the fact that the virtual hand-holding was incredibly helpful. Thank you.
I've been looking for the explanation given in 6:20 for like 2 weeks now, this is the third time I've found the information needed in your channel thank you!... besides you explain this in terms understandable for a mortal mtber like me.
One point I've noticed for choosing between air and coil can be rider weight, which is especially important for very tall riders (i.e. people at the very limit of XL/XXL frame recommendations). Thanks to maximum recommended air pressures, air shocks have a maximum weight limit before sag simply becomes too much to ride with. With a coil shock, on the other hand, sag is dependent on the spring weight, and there are plenty (or at least enough) 700+lb springs available that would work for people too heavy to run air shocks.
You guys are awesome, I ride road bikes but love the videos for the comedic effect you guys pull off
so glad they made this video. Only took me over a month to finally get proper information to have confidence in picking out a new rear suspension.
Can you do upgrading your fork? I really like this channel! You talk and mention everything as good as experts. Thanks

We did a video on forks already 😁 - kzread.info/dash/bejne/n5-HrcOdlbaxhMY.html
The more complex a rear suspension system is, the harder it is to upgrade to a better, compatible shock that is tuned or can be tuned the proper way. Then again, this is a great guide, thank you very much!
Good point. Most videos talk about eye to eye sizes and stroke, but rarely somebody talks about the rear shock simply do not squeeze into my frame. I was negatively surprised when my new Fox shock did not fit due to LV and SV size difference. And there is very little info about that in general. Frequent rare issues, yes.
Really helpful video, Bought a frame with a busted Rockshox Ario and didn't know what to get until that whole part about what I felt was missing. Now I find myself in another rabbit hole trying to find a good and not wallet destroying 165mm rear shock.
Not really looking to upgrade my shock but... it’s fun watching you guys and I am learning stuff.
Just upgraded my Rocky Mountain altitude with a fox float x2 factory today. Absolutely love it!! 🤩🤩
Wow, I saw the link to the new version on your old video, but I did not expect the new video to have literally come out today. What a coincidence, I suppose this is destiny
I over-stroked my yeti during a lunch ride. Not only did my longer stroke length feel amazing for me but but it felt better for others as well. Finally with a longer stroke length I’m now able to stuff some shoots I’d never be able to reach the bottom of previously. It feels awesome ! 😜 but for the best feels...I'd highly recommend over-stroking your shaft while simultaneously under-tickling your seat tube.
Guys, I'm just Shocked by your advice 😱🤘👊😀😜
Ya'll are a hoot! On a serious note good info.

Nice thinking about buying an new shock
I wouldn't mind looking like Jared one day. I like his shirt a lot
nice vid!
This video was so so helpful like wow all my questions are answered. kinda disappointed I'm stuck with 120mm travel on the rear forever though :/
This is excellent thank you. I have an ohlins on my 2016 specialized enduro pro carbon and the seals are blown. It won’t hold pressure beyond a few days. Starting to look at replacement options.
Have a 2020 Speicalized Levo SL with a FOX FLOAT DPS Performance, 3-position adjustment, 52.5x210mm, Rx Trail Tune and looking for something more tuneable and having less stiction. Assume the new FOX Float X will fit my Levo SL. Did get a FOX 36 Factory Fork from you a few weeks ago and absolutely love it. Now, need to bring the rear shock of my bike up to the level of its new fork.
Sweet, just came from the fork upgrade video.
As always great information, very informative (in a way a five-year-old could understand) which is exactly what I needed. My only question: When exactly did Jack Black join the Worldwide Cyclery team?
Bought a 11-6 for my size S SB130 and had one of the high speed damper knobs take paint off the inside of my downtube. Push swapped out the knob with a low profile preset knob for free, but I wish they would have told me about this issue as they said they knew about the issue beforehand.
Ohlins has a setup guide which advises which of their shock options are recommended for your specific frame and your rider weight.... it even gives you recommended volume spacer numbers and pressures......
PERFECT!!
I overstroked my giant trance... but I experimented a lot and ended up with a 2.5mm travel spacer over the stock 6mm spacer. With no contact under harsh bottom out/frame flex. Probably could have gone the full 6mm if I had been willing to live without the piggyback.
Jared, show me your sweater vest!

If you're trying to out-think the designer... what does that say about his design to begin with?
Jeff talks the most, but you can tell Jared is really the star of the show.
I over stroke by 2.5 mm. You can test the clearance issue by taking out all the air and compression the suspension.
Hey guys! Awesome advice all the time. I am riding an older 2011 Norco Range 2 with a Rockshox Monarch rt3 8.5" /2.5" rear shock. I want to go coil. What coil shock would you guys recommend. Cheers
Damn McClure they came out with this right after you got yours
Yo Jared good seeing u at sky park 😁
I own a hard tail, still enjoyed the video haha
knowledge and funny keep it up
Damn I wish I'd seen this video before buying a rear shock last year 😳😅
This video is helpful I want to replace mine because it’s clapped.

Haven't heard of the clap in that context. Does it mean the shock has totally failed?
Great advice, thank you. I’ve just bought a 2020 S2 Stumpjumper carbon 29’er. Limited Edition Troy Lee Designs, it came with a Fox DHX2 coil 500lb. I feel a could go with a 450 (I’m 69kg - 152lb) Any advice? This video was super helpful but are there any other SJ riders here using coil that can share their experience? Thanks in advance 🤘🏽
You guys are hilarious 😆! I may have no interest in the topic, still love your videos.
Well.....color me disappointed. I saw the first chapter and saw "Eye-to-Eye-----Stroke----then, Mount" and thought I was going to see a whole different type of flick. :-D Great video on shocks! Keep up the work.
Hi worldwide Is it possible for you to make a video on how to allign the circular washers when reinstalling shocks and pivot bolts. I am finding it extremely difficult to do
Love overstrocking my shock
You guys got any shock suggestions for the 2021 Stumpjumper carbon? With the carbon flexstays how do you even tune for it? Also will it fit a float X?
What do you think of the EXT Suspension Storia LOK V3? I’ve seen you displayed it on the UNNO, so how do you like it? I’m riding it in my Nukeproof Mega with a custom tune for my frame and style of riding and it’s THE absolute best shock I’ve ever ridden! Makes my Mega more plush and capable than my older DH bikes all while still having amazing amounts of pop and insane climbing abilities!
........that's right........LOL Jared's the best!
My 2021 Norco Fluid FS3 has a 190 x 45 Xfusion shock. What you recommend upgrading to
What shock should I get for my hard tail ?
When will I be able to get my hands on the screw on fender for my?? Rockshox SID Ultimate Race Day - Crown 29" Boost 15x110 120mm Gloss Black 44 Offset Tapered DebonAir, Maxle Stealth C1
Awesome vid! You guys talked about over stroking but didn’t talk about under stroking. Is there a particular threshold that’s OK to move forward with. Specifically, i have a 190x51 shock on my bike (OEM) and am looking to replace and options I like only have 190x50. Is 1mm actually going to have significant impact in performance?
Advice please. I have a 2020 Trek Rail 9.7 emtb. Stock Rockshox rear shock w/o a reservoir. I'd like to upgrade to a Fox Float but can't determine if it will fit on my bike due to the Fox having the reservoir. Any words of advice on this?? Usually ride in dry midwest trails with lots of roots and rocky dirt. Thanks in advance.
Hi I am riding Devinci django 2016 model .my rear travel was 120 mm according to spec guide .. so please do advise me what kind of shock I should look for ?
Can you rotate the eyelets on a shock to match the bike?
I’ve got a 2002 Trek Fuel 80 in excellent condition. The rear shock is a Fox Float Racing air shock. Is there an upgrade out there that will work on this bike and have a lock out on it?
I’m almost in the sweet spot in my bike setup. Rebound is still something I’m struggling with. I’m close but...
@worldwidecyclery I wanted to tune my torque:on 8 with an coil shock but I'm not sure if thia is possible due to the compatibility issues you mentioned in Chapter 3. Do you guys have an answer if a coil ahock is possible to ride on that specific bike?
Hi, I have a nukeproof mega and looking to upgrade to a coil. The size is 230x65 and the coil I’ve seen is 230x62.5 would that be ok or best to avoid? Many thanks
THAT'S RIGHT
Quick question. Im try to install new rear shock. But i dont know if i have to rise the frame a bit to install new shock. Am i doing it right? I think if i dont rase the frame the triangle, would it smash the frame when i lift the bike Please help
That's right!
Any recommendation for a shock upgrade on a 2021 Santa Cruz Tallboy?
Would you recommend PUSH coil for the 2021 yeti sb130? Not sure if it fits well.. PUSH got it customised for the sb130 but still… not sure if the bike will ride differently
When you find your measurements its written out like this e.g. 190x50mm or 7.5x2in (Eye length x Stroke length). You guys didn't mention that part. Now its easy to search which shocks are even compatible with your frame.
What about upgrading the frame on your shock 🤔
There are progressive coil springs, best of both worlds for linear designed frames
would anyone please let me know does 230/60 is compatible with Remedy 7 2020 or i will mess up the geometry? the stock version is 230/57.5. can't find anything on trek's website
Fox service website section, type in the 4 letter code on your current fox shock , and it will tell you the size and stroke , and what bike it came on. Such as KTM Prowler 230x65
I want to upgrade my current 150mm shock from rockshock to a 160mm rockshock and I dont know if I can do it
advice please: I've got a Giant AC Air Light, 2002 model, which I am converting to electric, the rear shock is leaking on the bottom, which shocks would you recommend as a replacement?
i love his ymca moustache
When upgrading you need to match the same shock sizes correct?
That’s right!!!
what happens to your push industries shock when you end up losing 20lbs? is it then useless to you?

Maybe easier to rebuild and instal upgraded guts in your stock suspension? Is that a thing?
Hello I’m new to mtbing. I just picked up a 2024 polygon D6 and I wanted to upgrade rear shock and I know the one on the bike is 190x45 but I can’t seem to find that size I can only really find 190x50/51. Can I use this size and do you have any recommendations? Thank you and keep them videos coming

I see Mario, but what the heck did they do with Luigi?
Would i benefit of the rear suspension when i am 250lb, riding just light terrain and standard roads? I currently have the hard tail bike.
"I have a 2016 carbon Trek Slash 9.9 that came with a Monarch Plus RC3 shock 210x60 and I want to switch to a coil shock. The problem is that I can't find the exact travel measurement. Is there a specific shock that you would recommend? Thank you!"
Can i put a normal shock with a 40x10 amd 28x8
Im running 190x45. Can i change that to 200x51? Cheers
I really need your help guys. I built an old school astrix stryke. It had a manitou swinger spv air shock. The spec sheet says it had rear shock of 200mm x 55mm and a rear travel of 6.5 inches I wanna ask for a compatible shock I can buy as an upgrade.
