Can we Drive the Most Unreliable Trucks Ever Made Across the Country?

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Download the FREE Upside App at upside.app.link/ghpc to get an extra 25 cents back for every gallon on your first tank of gas.
We bought the cheapest Humvee's we could find over 1,500 miles from home on a government auction site. After waiting two months for our paperwork to go through we bought a oneway ticket to Barstow California to attempt to drive our 4 door NA diesel Humvee and 2 door turbo diesel home. This is the ultimate American road trip adventure!

32:15 32:16 its fun cuz yall technically have the financial ability to just do it on a limb & if something goes wrong yall have reliable loyal people that will help yall out if it came down to it. I love fixing things & messin around too, it actually eases things in my head & gives me a certain level of calm & satisfaction that i just cant explain. But its not so fun at times cuz i dont have loyal people in my life & i dont have the financial safety that others have when things go wrong to the point where i need some help.

I was a motor vehicle operator that took part in the HMWVV testing for the USMC. They're not unreliable. They're just beat to shit and maintained by a bunch of young guys who don't care so long as it meets the standard. The stuff you're buying at auction is the worn out stuff that's no longer worth maintaining. You're basically buying something clapped out and no longer fit for service. And it makes for a hell of a great adventure.

Makes me almost cry seeing these being sold, only because they were new when I used them in Ft Irwin (89-93). The hidden tricks we learned, and the internal mod farm of stuff we tried to make them better for long trips. The Chevrolet Blazer was retired for this model, and we ripped out the blazer seats, and bolted them right into the M1037 and it was great for almost 6 months, until we got caught. yes, I am old.

In the Marines I worked as a logistics clerk in the motor T department of an artillery battalion. There were at least three parts on a Humvee that always broke down: the glow plugs, starters, and alternators. The CV joints had to be replaced often as well. Those Humvees would break down while parked. Our battalion was so underfunded that often the mechanics would go out on night missions and "acquire" parts off of trucks from the better funded battalions around us in Camp Pendleton. Ahhh, those were the good ole days!

Wow this is such a different experience to buying a used military vehicle from an auction off the German army. Like, people in Germany always make fun of the army because apparently they have a lot of broken equipment, helicopters that aren't allowed to fly and guns that deform on full auto (G36). But: they take really good care of their vehicles! My parents bought a 1978 MAN mil gl 5 ton offroad truck and that thing is probably the most reliable vehicle they own. The army did regular inspections on these vehicles, replaced broken parts and made sure everything works. There were new parts with the label still on installed just a year before auctioning it off. And that truck already was 35 years old when my parents bought it. But you turn the key, press the push button start and the engine immediately runs, every time.

I've got a 1988 M998 HMMWV, former US ARMY vehicle. I've spent enough on parts for that thing that I could have bought 2 or 3 at this point. Everything from simple things like glow plugs, to engine controller, to head gaskets/heads.. These vehicles are a blast, but you need to have a large wallet and a lot of time on your hands to keep them working and maintained. The vehicles you guys bought have a leg up on what I have. 4 speed transmission (I've got no overdrive), and the turbo on the one so you can go faster then about 60. I hope you guys had a blast driving them back. One of these days I really want to pick up one of the newer style 4-speed & trubo units, but so far haven't found one I'm willing to spend the money on.

ANT MAN ETHAN! 😂 Im built similar, but smaller than Ethan, he's got probably at least a couple inches and a couple dozen pounds on me at the least, but us lean fellas definitely tend to be a bit deceiving in strength. I for example only weigh 130 on a good day, but I haven't seen 7% body fat or more, ever. It's all muscle, yo, and it's effective! Not trying to downplay Ethan's strength, I called him ant man for a reason, I intend it to be commentary. He is for sure one strong dude and I would never EVER want to do anything like arm wrestle or try to actually fight him. It's dudes like him you gotta worry about. Lol

SO many flashbacks. Having one of my joes in the convoy leave the truck with the transfer case in L, cant figure out why the truck is ROARING for 2 hours and can barely make it into the double digit MPH's and its always something wrong on top of the operator. This is going to be my favorite series of your channel. Almost 30 years I have been with these vehicles and I have gone through just about everything you have... but I just call the wrecker to come get the truck which could be a day or 2 later. So many hours of my life stuck in a random parking lot on a convoy due to break downs. From deuce and half's, CUT-V's Hummers and HEMMITs.

When i came up with the design of my mini fishing pontoon, i couldn't settle on any single layout design, I found some of those quick-connect flush mount low-pro seat pedestal deck plates/ bases. I took then and laid them out into qrid-style layout. Next i picked out my seats and items who's location was undecided, then added the male side posts to their undersides. This gave me the ability to move each component and seat layout around them click them into place giving me the power to take or add stuff depending on the day's use and passengers. I also mad the handrails removable like on a stake-body flatbed. I also added some of the plain drop-in storage bins into the floor between the pontoons. I ended up with a 12' tiller-steered 15hp floating fishing deck, that i could be rearranged. It had 2 manually deployed awnings as well in case i wanted to use it for fun with the kids .

Agreed! A reasonable example (like a 6-7/10) in my area is usually low 5 figure territory, like 10-12k on the low side. And a 6.5 in my area, a turbo one, for a good running one (sub 200k) is usually 1k or less. As for the rest of the parts, I know a guy that had a handful of them before they got more popular in the area, and we had a hell of a time finding parts for the rest of it back then, I figure that's gotten a bit better though

Great watch fellas, had the same thing happen In Australia with an exported M1123, albeit a much cleaner ride than a gov planet truck but did over 4000km, trans went into Limp, ended up getting it to destination, required a new aftermarket TCU in and long story short had to rebuild the transmission long term, great truck now, super reliable love it. Have shared ur video to our Aus Hmmwv groups too! look forward to part 2. Another tip if the trans does gear up, check the relay behind the pass seat, big green thing. Mine was only letting 9v through, swapped to a civilian one 12v bam! trans worked again after I'd already spent a couple grand on TCU and other kit. A cheap simple fix if you're lucky.

This blew me back to the past. The NA Diesel was a solid motor, just not very fast or quick at all. I was a 63B Light wheel mechanic back in 1995 until 2001, right before the Turbo Diesel to our unit. such a simplistic vehicle to work on and fairly reliable except for the oil leaks and such. So easy to work on but a pain to work on too.

This episode brought back so many memories, the swapped wires was so common in many place on those. The ones on the on top of the engine for the injection pump would get swapped all the time. Crap wouldn't start at all. Some injection pumps had a pressure screw on top, mostly the 6.5s yank the wastegate line and turn the screw and let the fun happen.
