Can electric ice cream change the World? - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 24
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Here's how I did it! Two years' worth of development into one video, I suppose it makes sense that it's a bit long, but worth the wait: No more diesel fumes with your ice cream ever again!
It's all very well converting a brand new Mercedes Sprinter ice cream van to ev electric drive but really, that is the easy bit! The hard part is converting the carpigiani ice cream machine inside the van to electric drive as it normally uses the van's diesel engine to power the pulleys around. I finally put my degree in product design to good use and invent perhaps the most vital part in the world's first all electric ice cream van. And if you have ever wondered how an ice cream machine works, I can help you there too...
Edd China's Workshop Diaries 24: World's Fastest Electric Ice Cream Van Part 8 (How to convert an ice cream machine to electric).

Yes it's very interesting, I had no idea they were belt driven from the engine, much neater to use electricity, even in a hybrid setup with recharging while driving to the next place. There's also a way to modify alternators to become motors, but it's tricky as I think the timing needs to be rewired internally - but potentially a cheap souce of motive power.
Who'd have thought an ice cream machine could be so technically delightful. Great stuff Edd, you're the David Attenborough of the mechnical world.
If asked, how an Ice cream maker works would not be on my list of interests. However I found this video fascinating. Practical engineering at it's best. Excellent work again to Ed and team.

Watching John do his work reminds me of the old school boiler engineers and plumbers from back in the 80s and early/mid 90s. These craftsmen would turn up in a big ford van and have everything they would need for every job they'd encounter. In those days, you couldnt really just walk into places like B&Q and Wickes and walkout with a load of pre-made bends and other pipe fittings, Everything had to be hand made on the spot from lengths of copper or brass piping exactly how John did it. Watching John was very nostalgic.
Never thought I'd be so fascinated and captivated by watching a man explain the inner workings of an ice cream machine. Great to see your innovations have paid off, and I hope you've applied for a deserved patent! 😄
its only fitting that John the HVAC tech gets the honor and privilege of the first electrically made soft serve cone therefore enjoying the fruits of his labor!

There is a family man in Mojave California who has been driving his old Ford van with a propane powered refrigerator contraption. He delivers ice cream and has been for many many years. He just drove by. Never misses a day. All these years with that old beat up, smoky, but evidently reliable van. This man, whose family is from Mexico, would be the perfect person to give the electric ice cream truck to.
This is definitely my favourite project of yours. Even as a very experienced mechanic, I've been learning things from this series. Now I want my own ice cream van!
Awesome.. love the fact you did this in a repeatable way so other vans could be made this same way. Nice work Edd!
I hope this work gets developed into new, greener production models of ice cream vans.

great vid Ed, no wonder why Ice Creams are so expensive if the average van uses £25 of diesel a day
The AC guy was pretty cool.
It's great to have this new Edd China content every week! We didn't watch Wheeler Dealers for Mike Brewer that's for sure!
A superbly put together episode, there's enough of the detail and information in this to be satisfying but you can see the amount of work that went into refining the electric drive 'cartridge' for the machine. I especially appreciated the explanation of how the machine actually worked, and the footage of John's work on the refrigerant commissioning. As much as the car repair videos are fascinating, I'm glad there is this sort of content here too. Not many folk could explain the design, development and build process with as much knowledge and passion as Edd does. Brilliant.
Ed I enjoy your series. Being in HVAC and refrigeration. Your could make your drive shaft a little longer and add a heat sink cooling fan for your electronic control module if it generates too much heat. Keep up the good work.
Very good video Edd. The VW van's were perfect for this as getting power off the crankshaft pulley at the rear was a doddle. But, I like the way you did this. It has turned our perfect. Kind regards, South Africa
Had Edd in my home for a lot of years (not really, mind you. Only on tv...), now it's almost like the other way round. Really enjoying it. And, so you feel even better: the one and only car-related yt-channel I'm watching that my wife doesn't frown upon.
Having grown up in southern California, I had no idea ice cream trucks used an actual soft serve ice cream machine in them. I especially had no idea they ran off a PTO from the engine. That's crazy. All my life the ice cream trucks just sold ice cream bars and popsicles out of electric freezers in the back of the van
I hope Edd has patented that electrified cassette system. Guaranteed revenue stream.
Well I learnt something as I always thought the engine was left running for electric generation, not because the machine was running directly of it.
That is the most awesome tummy gurgling eco idea I have seen and follwed . Hat's off to you Edd, making ice cream and saving the planet at the same time. Brilliant !

@Sev I think the idea is that this can be a retrofit kit for any ice cream van, including ones which still have a diesel engine to move the wheels, not just electric drive conversions. (Because, let's face it, how many diesel ice cream vans are likely to merit a full drivetrain replacement with electric? In most cases, it's going to be more cost-efficient just to buy an electric van if you're going down that route.)
Nice job on the electric conversion of the ice cream machine. I recently saw an electric ice cream machine from a Dairy Queen that had been converted to diesel power. I never realized how much was involved in just making ice cream. Job well done, as you say!

Mr Edd China, this video is absolutely superb the moment from you explaining all the details and reasonings well done to you and your team made my day totally.
Great engineering, picked up a couple of tips for one of my projects, as always, you are a great teacher Edd. Thanks 😁
My Dad had a Carpigiani ice-cream machine in his cafe, and it was an absolute marvel of engineering. He cleaned it regularly, and I also helped on Saturdays. The mixing blades were quite sharp so you had to be careful, but taking everything apart to clean it and then reassemble everything was relatively easy. Luckily, we made our our own ice-cream mix in the small 'Ice Cream' factory at the back of the cafe. Two storage vats for the mix, (150 and 100 gallons), a 100 gallon boiler twin gas refrigerated radiators, two flow troughs and a triple piston pump would empty the hot mix from the boiler, pump it up to the highest trough, where gravity drained it down over the first radiator, onto the second radiator and onto the second trough, which then fed the flow to the storage vats. If British summertime lasted longer than expected, Dad and I would use up 1,500 gallons of milk to keep the cafe stocked up with fresh ice cream. They were great days for me, but my Dad had to work really hard. Watching Ed put together the Carpigiani machine in his van certainly bought back a few memories but, best of all, his approach in explaining how things are put together, how they function, and the principles involved in the process, always make for really interesting videos. Broadcasting is missing a trick not having Ed do some shows for TV but it's their loss. Thank goodness we have him on KZread!! 🤓
