Can this finally be it? - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 30

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

After months of battling with our Rally car conversion on my mate Neil's Mini, the end seems tantalisingly in sight but is this finally going to be it? Is the Rally Mini finally going to leave the workshop in pursuit of adventure on the open road, or is there just one more twist in the tale?

@@gavinwyllie7855 Opinions are like... ahem... tail pipes. We've all got one. I don't for a second think this is 'long-winded' or indeed 'boring' personally. And while he did an alignment episode on the Outspan this is totally different. This is setting up a car for a fast road/rally application and is far removed from correcting misalignment via component damage, he also used different equipment to do it. He even talked about the corner weights. Not all his content is going to appeal to everyone but this did to me.

Ed, for the lifts, the biggest thing to keep in mind is the load rating of your garage floor. regardless which lift you choose, you have to make sure the concrete floor can handle it and if not, possibly cut holes to pour thicker pads.

Had exactly this problem at the garage I worked at until last year.Another thing you see quite often is four individual posts which are positioned by each wheel and linked electronically.

  • @ryanridgely7807

My thought as well. I was researching lifts for my new garage. Two-posts have much more demanding floor requirements. Thickness, plus rebar.

3000psi concrete will generally support most loads on a four post system. 6000psi concrete is needed for a two post system. You won't find 6000psi concrete in most garages.

Sorry but I have to disagree with most of the comments here. The feet on my 2 post at work are likely a larger area than the footprint of 4 tyres sitting on the ground. It's just basic laws of physics of mass divided by surface area. Most 2 posts- or at least all those I've ever worked on- have square 'feet' at the bottom to spread the load and give a better position to bolt it into the floor.

To all the people that are bored of the mini... there's nothing boring about it. The car itself might be boring but the trip along the way taught you a lot. If you didn't learn anything from this then you simply are not a proper car enthusiast. I hate mini's myself but there was very good information taken from most of the mini videos that a lot of people can relate to. For instance stripped threat and how to solve it. what do to with a damaged subframe to fix it and so on... Not to mention anyone here who watches that are into rally or would like to start up there own. This beats the hell out of an old, cheese grater of a rangy that should be scrapped but again even though I don't like the car (hate them in fact as they are pointless) I still learnt a lot on the actual work that was done.

Ed, there are other good alternatives to the two lift options you looked at. Particularly for the DIYer in a standard or double garage. I bought a 2.7 tonne hydraulic scissor lift with 4 swinging arms. It folds flat under the car when not in use, enables doors to be opened, and has all the advantages of a 2 post lift but without the limiting factor of the 2 posts getting in the way. All for £1200, and its 240v single phase! Lifts about 4ft, perfect for a Mini in a double garage with another Mini parked in the other spot. We don't all have massive workshops!

Back in the 70s my brother fixed cars to top up his income. Rather than the lifts (too expensive) he built a pit in his garage, it took weeks to dig out, reroute all the service cables and pipes, pour the concrete ( he used a small mixer), install steps etc, but I can assure you a clutch change on a MK3 Corrina was soooo much easier. I remember prior to the pit we would lie on our backs, hold the gearbox between our knees, slide if forwards whilst trying to engage the motion shaft splines and all whilst wondering if the 3 inches of space was enough! 🙂 Fun in a strange kind of way.

Just now finished watching all 7 segments on Neil's R56 rally car. Very interesting and great fun as a new viewer of Edd's channel but long time viewer of W-D then and now still. I own a 2006 R53 slicktop with just 5175 total miles (8330 kms), obtained from original owner earlier this year, which had been purposely ordered minimally optioned for lightest weight and then track-prepped (but not subsequently used for such). No plans by me doing that, so taming for streets and highways has been my focus since then. All performance bits were sourced early in 2006 from UK and Germany suppliers, including Team Dynamic Wheels on AP Racing "big brakes", similar to as equipped on Neil's car and much more. Anyone interested can find my thread topic on the USA NAM forum posted under same username.

I would love to watch a Christmas special with Mike, Ed, Elvis, Ant, Paul making appearances. Forgive and Forget move forward ! Maybe a 88 Ford Taurus wagon from Christmas vacation.

2nd comment 😁 I like the way the classic Mini (Ed's Orange) was set up old school, and this modern mini needed a laser and computer 😉

I don't have a lift, and I agree the 2-post is the one that makes the most sense if you only have one. One positive for the 4-post not mentioned is storing cars. You can add an oil catch tray, the suspension remains loaded, and it is easier to park underneath it and still open doors.
