Can you make your own battery pack for EVs - Edd China's Workshop Diaries 27

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Running low on fuel? Go Electric! Here's how I built my Mercedes Sprinter EV conversion battery pack. 360 volt, 23 kWh and a whole lot of wires! Can you build your own electric vehicle, well, with great care, a lot of patience and the right tools and equipment, I did just that. And then I set a Guinness World Record in it. The fact that it can make ice cream, well, that's just a bonus!
So, decharge the static from a long week and chill out with your weekly fix of Edd-ness!
Edd China's Workshop Diaries 27: World's Fastest Electric Ice Cream Van Part 9 (How to build battery pack for EV conversion of Mercedes Sprinter van).

    Wow, I am an American, but I lived on Totteridge Drive in High Wycombe from 1966 to 1969! What a wonderful town it was back then, and when I got back to the States I was so far ahead of all the other students in my class that I got through High School in all the Honors Classes. Good memories of High Wycombe, my dad was in the US Air Force at that time. My father was a Master Crew Chief (Aircraft Mechanic) on B-52's and KC-135's, and he taught me to be a mechanic. I went into the US Airforce in 1974, at 17, and became an Aircraft Mechanic on 2 engine jets, or Fighter Jets, I was stationed at Edwards AFB in the California High Desert and then for 3 years at Spangdahlem AB in Germany. I went to Tech School of the F-4D and G models at RAF Alconbury for 6 weeks to learn how to work on F-4 Phantom II Fighters. I taught my son how to work on cars, and today he is a top salesperson for VW in California and builds his own VW Racecars.

    Yes, well, back then the British education system was all about education - imparting knowledge and giving people the foundation to go on and do more. Now - like America - it's all be turned around and driven into the dirt because of money. The education system in Britain is about keeping bankers flush with money - as everything is. It's all about student loans and tuition fees. It's an absolute disgrace but this is the way of the Tory. Sadly, even in Scotland where I live, they've gone down the same route. It's politicians with dangerously large egos and dangerously low intellect that are the cause of all of it. They're wrecking the world!

    As an engineer who repairs electric industrial vehicles his explanations were 100% spot on and most critically, easy for the 'layman' to understand 👍. Too many times I've seen these sorts of videos where the explanations have been simple, but factually so incorrect they've left me screaming at the TV 😂 There's nothing more dangerous or confidence damaging to a novice than poor information resulting in a poor understanding. I take it no one thought about that fact that each of thoses car batterys is comprised of 6 cells so in his comparrision they are the equiveant of having 24 batterys not 4.

    I remember when I was younger learning about how petrol engines worked and not fully understanding it but starting to piece it together as time goes by. I now feel like that again with electric vehicles becoming the next change for transportation. And watching videos like this help explain the fundamentals of how everything works is a real eye opened into the future. Having every part of the battery system laid out and explained in this video reminded me of watching engine rebuild instructions and every part explained and their function in driving the car. There are many people I see on car social media groups who turn their noses up at EV's. But if you're a car enthusiast, then you have to accept that this is going to be the new normal and if you want to be able to tinker/mod or even basically understand how your future car is going to work without relying solely on the dealership, then you need to accept EV's and begin learning about them now. In summary, thanks for making me feel like a kid again.

Because making any vehicle from a multitude of minerals & chemicals is clean & healthy, unless, of course, specifically those in an EV... 🤦 ICE manufacturers have never given a sh1t about the damage they do to the environment & our health. They have, for over a century, been FORCED BY LEGISLATION to clean up their acts. Laws they still flaunt (DIESELGATE). EV manufacturers are trying to rescue the environment specifically, so a main consideration is to constantly try to reduce their effect at every stage of resource extraction, processing, manufacture & use. It's only the engine's that are changing, they'll still have brakes and suspension to fail, as well as all the door locks, window regulators, failed electronics etc. Most garages don't rebuild engine's anymore as it's cheaper to just replace. I used to think the same as you but the more I think about it the less I'm concerned, as a mechanic myself. It's not going to change that much really. It won't affect me as the cars I work on are old already but there'll always be a need for mechanics.

  • @Makatea

    That change will happen way earlier. Right to repair-legislation will become even more urgent to be able to fix controllers at the component-level and there'll be a lot less grease and oil. Also, with a constant number of cars, there'll be less garages as there is a lot less that can go wrong on EVs: No more spark- / glowplugs, belts/chains, clogged particle filters, motor-oil-changes etc.

    EV technology is still important as it's the future of motorized transport for the masses. I'm sure we'll all be driving them in the near future. I was fascinated by the electric ice cream van. Gives a slight change from fixing oily parts from a traditional car. ICE vehicles will still be available up to around 2060 at that point EVs will be prevalent and petroleum would most likely be "rationed" ( like they did with **** petrol) perhaps to a yearly usage limit or "carbon allowance" of say 5000miles. So us petrol-heads will still be able to tinker with car for a while yet.

    Unfortunately the move to electric will take away the flexibility of the combustion engine. This is not Progress. Plus not enough thought is given to batteries that cannot be recycled. I will be dead by the time the mistake is realised. Hydrogen needs more attention.

  • @Makatea

    @Makatea

    2 жыл бұрын

    @@paullacey748 How are EVs less flexible? RIght now, they're pretty much the only way to be mobile in Brexit-land. Drive batteries have a lifespan in excess of 300.000 km, after that, they can still be used as grid storage and after that they can be recycled with a yield of over 90%. Hydrogen is very energy intensive to make, compress and distribute. Fuelcells are very inefficient, overall it's not a viable option for cars. BEVs are about three times more efficient and there are thousands of charging points and you can charge it in your garage. There are exactly 14 hydrogen stations in the UK as of april this year.

    My first job, as a 16 year old kid in 1964, was as an electric golf cart mechanic. The carts had 6 6V deep cycle batteries driving an electric motor of either 1.5 or 2 hp at 36 volts. Whilst 36V would not kill you, if your hands were wet, it would give you a tickle. Once I dropped a wrench (spanner) that landed across the end terminals for the 6 batteries and it melted before I could pick it up - thankfully I did not touch it. Since power is equal to volts time amps, higher voltages require fewer amps for the same power. Fewer amps means less power lost in the cables - think ohm's law.
