CAN A DODGE VIPER BEAT A FERRARI F40? | The ultimate 90s supercars showdown with Doug Demuro
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
Do you think that a first generation (and pre-production) Dodge Viper can beat a Ferrari F40 AND an Acura NSX on a head to head, airstrip race? Let us know in the comments and watch how these icons of the 90s duel against the Viper.
The first generation Dodge Viper was conceived in 1988 with the objective of creating a modern equivalent to a Shelby Cobra: it was first shown at NAIAS in 1989 purely as a concept car. Unexpectedly, it obtained widespread enthusiasm and the concept shown at the event lead to a standard production vehicle, during Lee Iacocca management era. Eighty five engineers and seventy million dollars were allocated to Team Viper to make it happen - Lamborghini casted a prototype from an aluminum block and the first mule was carrying a V8, which was then replaced by iconic V10 also developed by Lamborghini (then owned by Chrysler) in the production models.
Carrol Shelby piloted a preproduction car as pace vehicle during the Indy 500 race and in 1991 the Viper officially debuted in its final form at a price point of only $52,000, exponentially improving the image of a then not so successful Chrysler Group. No airbags, no abs, no traction control, no a/c, no door handles, no frills: just a lot of power.
The Viper has 400 hp at 4600 rpm and 465 lb/ft of torque at 3600 rpm. It goes from 0/60 mph in 4.2 seconds, and has a maximum speed of 165 mph.
You can get up close and personal with this Viper, on display in our Vault, as well as the F40 in our new Maranello Masterpieces: The Legacy of Enzo Ferrari exhibit, opening on Father's day at the Petersen Automotive Museum!
A big thank you to Pennzoil for making this series possible. Stay tuned for part 2 of this video, as a 2005 Dodge Viper ACR joins the races!

I don’t think the F40 driver is awake 😂
Wtf was that f40's reaction time?!? is there a dead corpse driving it? Jesus! Whole week went by before it left the starting line :D

This is THE worst drag race I’ve ever seen I my life, not only the F40 driver didn’t launch it properly, he also had a reaction time that’s longer than a Toyota Yaris 0-60mph time. And if you’re going to argue about that he want to protect the F40’s clutch, then don’t race with it at all! No one want to see these poorly executed drag race that’s not fair

Go Viper! Love that car, it’s also my dream car!
I wouldn’t even race the F40 if I’m going to drive it like that. You’re just making it look bad
Doug.... the Viper is actually a track car. I'm really stumped that you don't know the history of the Viper as the Doug Demoro. Even if the F40 was launched properly, all motor Viper will beat the boosted F40. People knock the Viper's interior in its early gens, but compare the F40 to the Vipers!! They are both horrible, but the F40 gets a pass because of Italian... Lastly, I still lust for a F40 in the garage and I will own one one day. Pennzoil, give me a crack at an episode. 😬.
Then why even have a 'drag race' if there's massive concern for the clutch etc... ?? Both times, the F40 wasn't even 'launched'... it just gently (eventually) 'rolled away' like it was out in normal busy traffic ! Kind of a pathetic waste of time gang, really.
Great vid, have always wanted to own a Viper!! 👍🏁🏁🙂
Doug has the look of a guy who never thought the Viper was going to sweep the pack
The Viper has more torque which means that it can accelerate harder. Also, the Viper driver looked pretty quick off the mark.
@IceTTom

More torque does certainly not mean it accelerates harder. With that logic.. get a semi truck with 2000ft/lb to totally wreck everyone! 😐 Also, Italian super cars are known for having large HP and RPM’s.. but moderate TQ. But they haul the mail… hmm

Doug, You’re allowing your bias against anything American to show through. The Viper wiped up the Floor with Honda and did great against the Ferrari! However you needed to race the Ferrari against the Honda and then the winner of that race against the Viper in a rematch. Then you’ll have the undisputed champ. And if the Honda’s forte is handling then you need to stage a Rally or some such event as well!! I loved the Video as always!! Thanks for the fun!!
@mhawke

Also, from a closeup of the front tire of the NSX, I see it's running 235/40/17s which makes them much larger than the 215/50/15's that the car was originally designed around. The NSX has traction control parameters that require the circumference of the rear tires to be within a certain ration of the front tires so I have to assume the rears also have a 4% larger circumference than the stock 16 inch. It may even be running 18" on the rear which would truly hurt acceleration. This summer I went from the 15/16 original 'fat fives' wheels on my '91 up to the 16/17 1995 NSX rims while keeping the stock circumferences and just the heavier rim slowed me down a tinch in a straight line so it all matters. I've raced 911's and on a twisty track, the stock NSX caught them in the corners but they pulled ahead on the long straights due to their extra horsepower. Since I don't regularly drag race against 911's in my everyday life. I'll take the incredible handling because THAT can be experienced every time I'm out and about.
Oddly enough...it seemed the viper slowed down right before the finish line...very surprising
what is this obsession for the straight line. what do you think would happen on a circuit with bends?

Agreed on point made at 5:06. A roll race would be better way to compare the relative performance and much less abusive on the clutches. Serously, why not do a roll race instead for these?

that is a much bigger event to set up for. Did you notice the people on the side of the track and the truck driving by the end of the track? Also would need more sophisiticated timing equiment, EMTs on stand by, etc. This was a more casual event.
Maybe, maybe, Ferrari should have built that beauty with a beefier transmission.

F40 and NSX should have raced.
Perhaps the F-40 realized the exorbitant cost of repairing the drive train if the car was pushed too hard; another reason for spending $52,000 for a new 1992 Viper v. $400,000 for a new 1992 F-40.

@@Thumper68yeah class wins in a class were they raced DIRECTLY AGAINST FERRARI. They beat Ferrari at their own game in their own cars in teams backed by their own factory. The F40 was the closest to a street legal track car you could get but it was almost exclusively bought by collectors and rich posers who'd use the same "for the racetrack" nonsense you spouted. Meanwhile, people in Corvettes Vipers and 911s were actually hammering their cars around tracks all over the world while F40s just rotted in museums. Even the F40 LM never saw any racing since by then the McLaren F1GTR was out and there was no way Ferrari could keep up.
