Ari Vatanen response when asked about his alleged comment about refusing to lose to a woman ‘I can’t remember saying it but if I did, at the end of the day, I’m going to be gone and forgotten and she will be remembered forever.’ Ari Vatanen being a practical superhuman of driving history saying that about Michelle Mouton. They were made different, absolute legends. Neither of them will ever be forgotten, but Michelle and Fabrizia set a precedent for women for the rest of history.

She didn't say "I was not interested in racing" but rather can't really afford it. Her dad, as you said, was a massive gearhead but after the war, their family was relatively middle income and it wasn't super wealthy enough to pursue a full-on racing career which Michelle herself had always wanted. Then when she went to university, she heard her friend saying that he's entering a rally and intrigued, she asked to be entered at the same event but as discrimination against woman was huge back then, she couldn't sign in as a driver but instead tested out her mettle as the co-driver for said friend and oh boy did she love the sport immediately. She then went back home after the event, told her dad her ambitions of living her dad's dream and also her new found love for the sport and begged her dad to get her a car. He dad eventually complied and got her a Alpine A110S with all the money he had left and told her that she had to get at least a win within the season to even keep the car or else he'll cut their losses and sell the car which, Michelle did win and eventually did keep the car for a long run till her time in Audi.

Great timing on this video upload. Was just watching a documentary on Pike's Peak yesterday and really wanted to learn more about the Queen of the Mountain more than just the usual accolades I've heard so many times before!

I've watched almost everything about Michele, I was missing just this one I think. And every time the reaction is the same: big smile and even bigger tears of joy. Very nice video, complete.

She was good, no question, she beat Ari who was leading because he slid off in a 2 wheel drive Escort, she was leading Walter again who was driving a 2 wheel drive Opel, Michèle had the only 4 wheel drive in these events. When all the boys turned up the following season in 4 wheel drive cars Michèle has serious competition on her hands in equal machinery.

This was also the START of AWD in Rally. Considering that, She had many many issues with her car during these rallies but yet still coming up on top in some of these rallies. Group B was not for the faint of heart. Truly the greatest female driver to EVER live.

I believe women deserve the choice to compete with men. Statistically, it's very clear as to whether women would be competitive or not.

There's too few women that get into the sport, then far fewer that go through the ranks to the top. Sometimes there's gems that shine brightly. There's millions of men that don't get into WRC or F1 and maybe don't progress much further than racing stock cars or karts in their state/province. The sheer numbers result in why men dominate the sport. Men also have the physical advantage - strength and cardiovascular capacity help at the highest levels. It may not be relied upon as much as other sports, but when a couple of percent make a difference, it matters. Take a look at the current F1 drivers - they are lean and muscular and very fit. Often the women that do seriously race have a father that either raced or works on cars to guide them. They have the choice - if anything, if a woman has the talent, the sponsors will be scrambling to sign them. There's some female drivers out there that have been signed to major F1 teams for development that wouldn't have been signed if they were men performing at the same level.

When I think of Michele Mouton the most pervasive thought that comes to my mind is honestly "how much better was she than the men of her era to even get the chance to compete at that level in such a boys club"? I think we all know the answer...and it has absolutely nothing to do with how she looks or whether or not she uses a different bathroom than the boys. She is/was the really real deal, and it's thrilling to know that the Queen of the Mountain title is one that will likely stand a very long time. Bravo!

Well to the LeMans episode: "dry tires" and wet tires" only existed for 2-3 to begin with. Before that there weren't slicks. Also wet tires weren't radial tires yet also. So only in extreme conditions they were faster. Of course staying out was huge dangerous especially in these cars that many saw die.

In Germany , Michelle Mouton is the Queen of Rallye and Motorsport . Even Isolde Holderried ( a high respected female German Rallyedriver ) couldn´t run off Michelle´s Titel . Btw : It was Walter Röhrl who brought Michelle Mouton to AUDI . Audi ask him before Michelle but in the first tests of the new Quattro Walter didn´t get along with the car and had doubts about of the reliability of the car . Then Audi ask Michelle Mouton and she asked Walter if she should take the opportunity to drive for Audi . Walter said , because they knew each other in their drivingstyles , " This car could be THE car for your drivingstyle " . So Michelle took the contract and the rest is history . After his fatal words about Michelle he also asked for excuse to Michelle and said : " First it was said in high emotions and the Press pushed it higher than it was " . Through all the years of their careers both have been big friends and they still are .
