I love the design as well….but I would say that one might just cry in pain after a couple of days of this car being your daily. I had one borrowed for a short while…and the way your left leg is wedged towards the middle..to operate the clutch literally almost put my hip out of joint. I’m 6’1 210 lbs…and believe me…this could have been a medieval torture device for someone my size. To be fair, in early 1990’s I bought a 1991 SL500 in Houston and drove it to Seattle…and by the second day..when getting gas..people would literally see me crawling out of the car on all fours…the seats were truly designed to cripple if you went farther than getting a Starbucks in your neighborhood. So no car is perfect..no matter how beautiful.

It has always been the Countach for me, even today. The design was just so far ahead of its time, even now it looks contemporary. Strictly speaking, if my memory serves me right, the Testarossa wasn't the Countach's direct competitor, it was in fact the 512 BB. Whether it was the 512 BB or the Testarossa, I always saw Lamborghini as being way ahead in its forwardness in design.

The Ferrari f40 and Porsche 959 in the mid 80s when they came out were and are considered to be the first ever SUPER sports cars. I've heard that although both were awesomely-fast (barely exceeding 200 mph - the first ever street-legal cars to) they, like most extreme sports cars, had 'bone-jarring' rides, predictably and not surprisingly. Supposedly both were great 'track cars' too...

Fun fact; In the late '80s Lamborghini built one Countach as a carbon fibre monocoque, rather than a steel spaceframe chassis. It did the rounds of the car magazines at the time. And then they crashed it. Deliberately, to see how a carbon fibre structure would behave in an accident. At that time no manufacturer was producing carbon fibre chassis road cars, it had only become routine in F1 a few years earlier.

Funny story about the Miami vice Testarossa. Jay Leno said he was talking to Michael Mann, (Miami Vice creator) & Mann told Jay that the 1st Testarossa they used was a fake because the show was low budget. Somehow Enzo Ferrari found out about the show & found out that Mann was using a fake Ferrari. Mann said Enzo called him & said "why aren't u using a real Ferrari? Why the fake one?" Mann replied that it made sense because it looked like a Ferrari, but was 1/4 the price. "Plus who cares. The viewer can't tell the difference & it's still been a great boost for your company Enzo, right?" Enzo replied, "I know your viewer can't tell the difference & yes it's been a great advertisement for all of us here at Ferrari motors, but the problem is I can it's a fake & the idea of anyone using a fake Ferrari is killing me. Look. I'll give u a real Testarossa to use on your show. Just stop using that fake one" Mann (very surprised but thrilled) agreed & next day Mann told his writers & other staff that on the next Miami vice episode, they HAVE to blow up the fake Ferrari. He told them to start coming up with ideas as to how we can blow up the car for the next episode" On the next episode the car was blown up. And he never told them why he wanted the car blown up until Enzo shipped the new Testarossa a few days later & Mann drove it onto the film set while the crew & actors were shooting the very next Miami Vice episode.

I remember reading Road and Track Magazine during the 80's and drooling over both of these cars. I always liked the aesthetics of both, but preferred the Testarossa. I've never driven either, but, for those interested, watch Jay Leno's review of his Testarossa. He drove one daily for years and gives a pretty honest assessment of it. If I recall correctly, he said he liked it, but, like this reviewer, said there are better driving cars. Leno described driving the Countach at high speeds as like driving a brick because the aerodynamics aren't particularly good despite it looking like its aerodynamics should be efficient and stable. Actually, I always preferred the Porsche 911 and its variants to both of these cars (particularly the 930 Turbo), and would get one today, if I could afford it - which I can't. When I was 15 I figured I was going to live in a mansion, drive a 930 Turbo and date a series of supermodels until I died. I'm still waiting for that whole process to begin.

Low and wedgie the lotus steering heavy at slow speeds, visibility from the rear through the slats is difficult. Worse in the dark as being so low everyone's headlights from behind are on eye level and going over any bump in the road means they get cutout but the slats so its like they are constantly flashing you from behind.

Well that was fun!! I've loved the Countach from a young, impressionable 5 year old - and it owes a lot to Cannonball Run! It sounded amazing, looked incredible - to hell with practicality! Supercars weren't/didn't have to be 'practical'. I loved the Testarossa too. Ferrari has always made beautiful cars! Posters for both of these were on my wall, but my #1 favourite at the time was always the Porsche 911. This was all changed in 1985 when I was introduced to the 959...now THAT became THE car for me! Still loved the others, but my early love of engineering & innovation had me hooked with the Porsche - AND getting nearly 450 hp out of a 6 cylinder engine boggled my mind when the Italians need 12 to do the same!!

Felt like being visited by a unicorn, drove in formation for some time. Very cool memory to begin owning such a cool car. One thing that I think people often forget to mention about cars is how different they can look at night, and a Testarossa looks incredible, especially one as pristine as this.

The Countach came from outer space. So stylish, unconventional and brutally shaped, looks more like a spaceship than a car. Any other contemporary competitor was overshadowed by its design. Testarossa and 512BB were two wonderful cars, with a more polite and elegant design by Pininfarina, but were way less emotional than the Lambo. The raging bull's masterpiece re-defined the idea of an "exotic car", and not just because of its futuristic doors. I saw all the generations of this model in the Lamborghini factory and I have to say are all some really impressive cars. Are way more brutal even of the more recent models. A real "Raging Bull".

A nice review! And great musical choice - very fitting for the 80's! 😆 However, though purely subjective I cannot agree on the attractiveness of the Testarossa being top tier at Ferrari(btw this isn't the first Testarossa there was another over 20 yrs prior). At Ferrari's Finali Mondiali show Daytona in '16, I was lucky enough to be surrounded by (3)F40 & (2)288 GTO among many others & this solidified to me the Testarossa though certainly very exotic is Enzo aside one of the most clashing Ferraris stylistically (exception being the front design). Maybe shocking is a better word. It has absolutely no chance against an F40 or 288 GTO! Or how about a 275 NART Spider?! Even more modern models like the 458 are more beautiful, graceful, & exciting IMO. Though nearly disastrous from a driver's & aerodynamics point of view, the Countach in this iteration has proven timeless in design. How not to be awestruck? In fact, the very Countach that starred in the movie "Cannonball Run" & pretty much started the model's craze that continues to this day(in the US at least) was recently put in the registry of historic vehicles here in the U.S.! It's now in display I believe in D.C. or somewhere in the NE. The REALLY. crazy part? From the early 80's I actually grew up not a mile around the corner from this car, when its owner Ron Rice(founder of Hawaiian Tropic) built his mansion on the ocean in Ormond Beach, Florida! We all knew Ron, & though it was routine seeing it around town it never grew old! Us car crazed kids always went WOW every time we saw it. The funny thing is Ron always seemed to drive it like an old lady! He owned it many, many years(maybe still does), & in fact the Florida plate is still on the car where it's on display now!

Lamborghini for me, but Miami Vice made the Testorossa super cool. I was lucky enough to be driving an S3 Esprit Turbo ( my best friends car ) back in the very late 80’s to early 90’s, it had a S4 engine in it when the newer car was released, and an updated boost. It was so fast and so practical to be used as a daily driver which it was. Prior to the Espirit my buddy had a Lotus Sunbeam, actually he owned a few, both the S1 and the stunning S2, so fast, the original sleeper. We raced them all in that, 911, Quattro, Cosworth it beat them all except flat out on the motorway where it’s brick like aerodynamics hindered it. Strangely though, I had a Mk1 3 door Escort in 84/5 which would be worth crazy money today. I also had a Mk1 Astra GTE, hardly any left on the roads today, Mk1 Opel Manta ( can’t remember the last time I saw one on the road ) , R5 Gordini Turbo ( rare as hell these days ) 1275 GT Mini Clubman ( rebored to a 1340cc ) a mint Peugeot 205 CTi, Honda Civic CRX ( the second version 1990 ) amongst others. If I’d kept 2 or 3 of these I’d be able to buy a Lamborghini from the proceeds of selling them, if only I’d known that back then.

Eh, i saw the Cannoonball run movie and the Countach was the only one for me ever since if picking a "supercar". And then later in the 80s, i was with my elder brother to a car meetup thing and got to take a testride in BOTH Countach and Testarossa. And yeah, sure the Testarossa's advantages are nice and all. But the Countach just takes the cake without even trying, simple as that, even with a few downsides. Although the Countach i was in had powersteering, didn't know that wasn't normal. There was also some racing done and the Countach won against everything except a couple of extreme dragracer cars. Although if the powersteering wasn't standard, i wouldn't be surprised if the engine had been trimmed beyond normal as well. It was definitely that kind of people.
