Camping Black Gap WMA Part 2 - EP 51

Camping Black Gap WMA Part 2 - EP 51
This video is of a full day enjoying the Black Gap WMA after a very cool and peaceful night’s sleep at shelter #16.
Shelter #16 has approx. 100 yard distance to the river and some of the shoreline was sketchy for access. Meaning it is doable but not just a walk down a trail into the river. I found some slow moving deep water pools that would be great for swimming & diving into and other areas I found shallow chicanes of swift moving water. My dogs are not familiar with swift moving water or rocks so it was interesting to see them explore, cope and adapt.
Enjoy the video and if you have been to Black Gap WMA post a comment of your experience. Or post a comment if you have a question.

Thank you for this video. I'm hitting the Big Bend NP again this winter and want to expand my camping areas...this is a destination I'll be hitting. Beautiful dogs!

10-4, your welcome. I could go on for an hour talking about BGWMA but that's just me. The stars must of been aligned for me on that trip because the weather and the river levels I experienced were the best you could ask for. my 2 cent advise is be sure to get your Limited Use Permit before going AND double check that it is not closed due to hunting season. And then.....Go have fun.

Looks like a good place to add to a Big Bend trip

Yes it would be......if you have the time. Probably an hour drive from either Panther Junction or Marathon just to BG WMA Headquarters. Fuel, minimal store supplies, ice, cell service and tent or RV camping at Stillwater near the entrance to the WMA for overnighting if that helps.

Roughly how long does it take to get to fish camp 14 from hq. We’re going to stay at black gap week after next and use it as a base to explore the WMA but also to explore big bend.

I would estimate from BGWMA HQ to fish camp #14 is easily 1.5 hour if driving non-stop. It would be heck of a drive back and forth to explore into the National Park. I recommend calling the HQ before you travel and confirm camping is allow during your trip dates or at least the driving tour is open. My understanding is general visitation & camping is only allowed between March 1st and August 31.
