Right. Elio deliberately provoked Oliver by not playing the same piece he played earlier immediately so that their conversation could be longer. If he'd played it the way Oliver wanted right in the first place (which he knew exactly Oliver would want it to be played in), then they wouldn't be able to talk back and forth like they did. All Elio wanted was Oliver's attention and how to sustain it for as long as possible.

"I stood up and walked into the living room, leaving the large French windows open so that he might hear me play it on the piano. He followed me halfway and, leaning on the windows' wooden frame, listened for a while. "You changed it. It's not the same. What did you do to it?" "I just played it the way Liszt would have played it had he jimmied around with it." "Just play it again, please!" I liked the way he feigned exasperation. So I started playing the piece again. After a while: "I can't believe you changed it again." "Well, not by much. This is just how Busoni would have played it if he had altered Liszt's version." "Can't you just play the Bach the way Bach wrote it?" "But Bach never wrote it for guitar. He may not even have written it for the harpsichord. In fact, we're not even sure it's by Bach at all." "Forget I asked."

Maybe it's special/memorable to them because they find the scene to be exactly the same as they have read in the book.. Maybe some have genuinely liked the flirting here between Elio and Oliver.. Although I must say I am a little bothered by the 'sugar daddy' and 'sugar son' references, because I never thought their relationship had anything to do with the age gap between them (7 years is not a huge age gap anyway)..

So I read the book where Elio played the tune which he created by himself for Oliver.😭😭 “This is the Bach as transcribed by me without Busoni and Liszt. It’s a very young Bach and it’s dedicated to his brother.” I knew exactly what phrase in the piece must have stirred him the first time, and each time I played it, I was sending it to him as a little gift, because it was really dedicated to him, as a token of something very beautiful in me that would take no genius to figure out and that urged me to throw in an extended cadenza. Just for him. We were-and he must have recognized the signs long before I did-flirting. One must read the book😭😭😭

This movie gives a lot of precious feeling to us viewers who loves it. The cinematograpy, the acting, the actors, tge soundtrack choice. And ofcourse the settings and time when it was occur. 1983 where gadgets dont already taken up the lives of people. Where people talk all day long and showing true love. I wish i had loved my teenager years in the 80's living in a town where fresh air good music and true love is all around me. :(

True love isn't hindered by the circumstances surrounding us but the feelings within us. If your definition of "gadgets" is what prohibits love, then humbly, I say it was never love to begin with. Also I find it funny how you speak so badly of technology when technology is the very thing that brought you her.. If not for the advancements of this world then Call Me By Your Name would have remained a thought in one's head never brought to life. We are given the blessing of revisiting work, old and new, won't you feel grateful and understand it is not our tools to blame but humanity? Love exists everywhere but people are so blinded by the covers they don't even bother to read in between the lines. I don't wish to go back to the 80's though it has many pleasurable pieces I admire, this world revolves at undying speed. The cinematography, acting, actors, and soundtrack you speak of are all a product of modern day and not the past you long for. The 1980's didn't have the Timothée Chalamet and Armie Hammer who's acting is beyond matured. Do you really believe time constricts the forces that matter? Perhaps people do talk all day long, but you're too busy replaying past conversations instead of appreciating the harmony that flows currently. If there is no true love in your eyes, then why don't you create. These are jusy my two cents coming from a girl who is exasperated from hearing the same, skindeep badmouthing my generation seems to recite in hopes of impressing an imaginary audience.

"Oh to see without my eyes"...guys I just read the book, and I thought it would be a quick read just for the pleasure of the relationship between these two, and I thought it would be one of those "easy" books...but damn was I wrong! It was so beautifully written. I have in me this magical feeling now, of Italian summer and universal love! I have this feeling that I could love everyone and that everyone could love me! The emotions are described so wonderfully that I was often caught by surprise, like someone knew my secret! It was magical and I'm so glad I read it after watching the trailer: I loved giving the characters these faces! Viva l'amore!

Never before has a film made such a strong impact on me, although I was born in the 90s this film brought me to a nostalgic feeling where things were much simpler and more meaningful. I’m not sure about others but Ive had that one powerful love where it was obvious to everyone else and ultimately had an expiration date. This film is beautiful, perfect, meaningful and much much more. I’ve been waiting to see this film ever since production started years ago and I am so happy with the results, glad I waited.

"The first clip from Call Me by Your Name to hit KZread in the lead-up to its release is also one of the film’s best scenes: 17-year-old piano prodigy Elio plays three variations on a Bach piece to toy with the object of his affection, Oliver. It’s a microcosm of what makes the film great, right down to the use of some of Guadagnino’s recurring directorial techniques. The scene actually starts before the KZread clip does. Sitting outside on a lazy summer afternoon, Elio plays a Bach piece on the guitar, thinking Oliver is asleep. But Oliver stirs, nonchalantly asking him to “play that again”. Seeing his opening, Elio takes the lead in their flirtation for the first time, leading Oliver inside, to the piano, to show off, tease, and finally affectionately give Oliver what he wants. Guadagnino shot the meat of the scene indoors, in a single take, to keep us in this emotionally charged moment, a technique he uses throughout the film to stretch out time when an event seems particularly intense. Using a wide shot means both Oliver and Elio are visible throughout the scene. We can watch every minor shift in their bodies as they respond to each other. Guadagnino keeps Elio in the foreground, but Oliver is still in focus, and his whole body is in view at the back of the frame. Armie Hammer’s 6’5” physique and giant limbs mean Oliver can take up a lot of space, and Hammer allows him to stretch out. Standing by the table at the entranceway, he bridges the entire gap of space between the piano and Elio, in the background, as he leans on an adjacent chair. It’s a somewhat sculptural pose, reflecting the images of those Hellenic men from the film’s title sequence. 'It’s teasing, clever, and charged with sexual tension, the musical equivalent of a screwball comedy.' As Joanna Di Mattia points out in her feature on Timothée Chalamet’s performance, words are futile devices for Elio when it comes to expressing his feelings for Oliver. Here, Elio does with music what Beatrice and Benedick do with words: he’s bantering with Oliver. It’s teasing and clever and charged with sexual tension, the musical equivalent of a fast-talking screwball comedy. By reinventing the Bach piece thrice, Elio shows off his wit without having to verbalize it. He’s both nervous and cocky here, exaggerating his movements. It’s noticeably more performative than when he played for his parent’s friends a previous evening. The scene shows Elio both at his most exasperating - teasing Oliver by not playing quite what he’d been asked to, refusing to turn and engage with Oliver directly - and his most tender. When Oliver throws his hands up and walks out the door, Elio lures him back in by playing the original tune as sweetly and tenderly as possible. Now, he keeps looking back at Oliver, to check that he’s having the desired effect. He is. Throughout the film, Guadagnino makes us aware that much is going on just outside of Elio’s view. We see Oliver’s every reaction, which Elio can only sense. When Oliver leaves the room - and our view - we are aware of just how delicate a balance Elio must strike, toying with him without losing him. There’s a world outside, elsewhere, for Oliver, and he’s not afraid to leave for it. The scene ends almost prematurely. Elio finishes playing and explaining what he’s done; Oliver takes a breath, about to speak - and we cut." - Alex Heeney

“it’s young bach. he dedicated it to his brother” this line reminded me of ‘futile devices’, one of sufjan stevens’ songs on the soundtrack: “you are the life i needed all along i think of you as my brother although that sound dumb” i think this nebulous perception between love and brotherwoodness is part of the complex feelings that surround a first-time samesex relation… for me, that single line at the end of the scene kind of justifies why elio chose to play this song nearby oliver; even if unconsciously 😁

Timmy has talent beyond explanation........ he beauty, his openness, his commitment, his sincerity, his charm, his ability to act like he really isn’t. And then there is Armie, who brings the experience and charisma, the talk beyond belief, his ability to suck Timmy in, and between the partnership, you want to ship these two into a real live story which never ends. I haven’t been able to see the movie yet, but the clips from you tube and other sources make me can’t wait! I am a bisexual man and the sex has no baring on the story and yet the relationships, the memories from my first loves, the places I went right and the places I went wrong, make me want the chance to do it all over. However, we know life does not afford the luxury but it does fill my heart with hope and love for others experiences. I wish my time in the early eights would have been pure and innocent as portrayed in the movie. The early eighties, were a scary time to for men to find true love. The sexual relationships don’t bother me as much as the ability to feel the whole period I missed out on because of ignorance and lack of knowledge of “the plague” no one knew anything about it. Could you kiss? Could you sit on a toilet seat? The story, the scenery, the music, the plot, the bonds and the innocence of the movie are something I did get to experience for 4-5 years and I will always cherish and remember the times. January 19, 2018 can’t get here soon enough!

"It's a very young Bach and it's dedicated to his brother." I knew exactly what phrase in the piece must have stirred him the first time, and each time I played it, I was sending it to him as a little gift, because it was really dedicated to him, as a token of something very beautiful in me that would take no genius to figure out and that urged me to throw in an extended cadenza. Just for him. We were---and he must have recognized the signs long before I did---flirting. 《CALL ME BY YOUR NAME》, ANDRÉ ACIMAN

Timothée Chalamet is a force of artistic nature. Playfully perfect with Armie Hammer's beautiful Oliver! Why does so much of this bring me back to Joe Wright's Pride & Prejudice ..? I'm brought back to the scene with Elizabeth playing piano (at Lady Catherine's) as Darcy is nearby and they are verbally circling each other! I love how, here, Elio stops messing about and (musically) acquiesces, saying "here, I give this to you...what you ask of me." Notice how he looks at Oliver as he plays the last "true" version Oliver asked of him. Timothée Chalamet, you are absolutely awesome in what you accomplished in this scene! Awe is the word man! Wow. I've seen the film twice and it is just heart-achingly gorgeous.

of all the scenes in this movie (which are all very beautiful), this scene "play that again" is the most romantic of all for me. i believe that like music, this scene must be understood way deeper. why would elio interpret bach's piece in different ways if he was requested by oliver to play the way bach must have played the piece? because elio wants to tell oliver, "i am not an easy-to-get person, court me with all your heart, be sincere and committed and you'll have bach, you'll have my heart and love." then oliver tried to leave elio. why? because oliver is trying to tell elio that perhaps he is not worthy of his wonderful and pure love - oliver felt his unworthiness and he does not deserve elio's love. but before oliver can move farther, elio played the way bach would play the piece as requested by oliver - this is a way of elio telling oliver, "you are worthy of my love... please, don't leave, i can't take it if you leave." oliver returned and listened to the true bach's piece being played by elio - now elio and oliver can share the true bach - the true love without the masquerade of any other composers, it's the true elio and the true oliver being with each other. this is a genius scene.

right spyder This is only the second half of the whole scene. It started in the garden where Elio played "the thing that he played outside" on the guitar and called Oliver to follow him inside the house 😍 when Oliver wanted him to play it again. Movie is a masterpiece.

I've watched this scene many times but I've only noticed this now: Elio never looked at Oliver when he was playing the tune the first two times. But when he played it the third time, he keeps looking at Oliver, almost tenderly.

I just saw it last night (I live in the Bay Area, CA) and it was released here on 12/15. I was completely mesmerized by Timothée Chalamet's performance! It is simply one of the most natural performances I've ever seen on any young actor or actually any actor of any age! He clearly deserves at least a best actor nomination for the Oscar! I have been hearing lots of buzz about Gary Oldman's performance in Darkest Hour so I can't compare the 2 performances but so far this year Chalamet's performance in CMBYN is easily the best I've seen by a very long shot!

@@thirteen6362 you adjusted it into lower age so it will look more phedo thingy. 10 years old with 17 years old so it will look like a child abuse. Yes its 7 years gap but as long as the lover climb up into adult ages, its not bad. Its about the maturity. Just think of a 53 and 60 years old lovers , its not looks bad cause they are mature

the moment i realized timothee chalamet was an amazing actor was the scene in this movie where oliver squeezed elios shoulder. i remember sitting there and watching this movie for the first time. i had just finished the book in the book that shoulder squeeze is a very long action (about a page and a half of description that it looked back on throughout thw book). the moment when it all happened and how well every little emotion was in that one second long squeeze was there. it was crazy. so yeah props to timothee chalamet for playing elio so well.
