That is not an engine failure. That is an engine shut down, and very common for Radial engines to backfire on shut down and start up. Also, Thunder Pig was at Thunder over Michigan 4 days later with fully operational engines.

Can it taxi with that engine out?

Twin engine planes can still fly with 1 engine out so most definitely can taxi with 1 shut off easily. @@scottw5315

Yeah big radials get CRANKY when using reverse, cough sputter backfire just plain shutdown or work just fine.

I doubt that the engine was intentionally shut down on landing roll.

The hilarious part is this plane always makes these dramatic arrival. It’s like equivalent to the person that comes stumbling into a room dropping stuff and falling. Then they stand up and silently look at everyone. While everyone says “bless his/her heart”

This is one of the things that worries me most. Every video I see of this plane landing, the plane is always shaking and it is never a smooth landing like the planes that landed before or after. I truly question how well this plane is being maintained.

Well, you would not shut down a radial before you scavenge the oil back to the tank unless you just don’t care about your engine health. My guess is the idle is set a bit low or mag/timing issue.

That was my first thought. The idle was set too low, and when he rolled back the power it killed it.

What is it above the right engine? Looks like somethings spraying out the cowling?!

I saw that. Looks like fuel because it is clear. Or, hydraulic fluid? Odd whatever it is.

As old as it is we only use them for airshows but in our military we don't have them in service and thats because it well obsolete and we have much bigger and better cargo planes like the C-5,C-130 H and J models and a few others too.

The C-123K means it was converted to GE J85 turbojets. Sounds like a radial engine, so still a C-123B.

The C123 held on to radial engines except for prototypes using pure jets. Several jet types were tried as axillary power, like the B36.

This is definitely a C-123K. The engines weren’t “converted,” the J-85s were just added.

Designed as a glider, recips tacked on, (B-model), then the jets, (K-model). Aerial mule. Crewed them in 1968, ‘69.

That engine has problems, they were flying around a sick aircraft. Never shut down an engine this way.
