Owning a 2004 Golf mk5 1.9 TDI with 380.000 km on the clock, everything works like new..... definitely none of those problems you stated and it's not like the car has nothing to go wrong It has the full option package, with almost every single feature you can find in today's luxury cars, like heated and electric seats, multi function steering wheel, Bi-zone automatic climate control, Bi-xenon automatic headlights with manual and automatic height adjustment and highway assist, multi function display in the cluster, multimedia touch screen, automatic wipers with rain sensibility adjustment, steering wheel with height and telescopic adjustment, parking assist with parking sensors and reversing camera, 8 airbags, seat belts with rotary pretensioner, automatic sunroof, heated and electric side mirrors, auto dimming centre mirror, occupants interior monitoring, rain auto closing, ABS, ASR , ESP and much more and guess what! everything still works like new after more than 12 years. My guess is most people don't know how to maintain their cars properly, and also the the US spec VWs are not very good which why I think you have all those problems.

Very good car, engine and equipment, I know a Golf 5 from 2.2005 with Limited Edition Equipment and 1.9 TDI BKC 105 HP engine that has traveled as much as 730000 km. The only major problem on it was the Camshaft, which broke down at 302,000 km. The equipment is very good and there are many accessories that are rare. The car was on a Taxi in Bosnia and Herzegovina, where the roads were bad, and every day the Golf traveled 400 kilometers and drove a lot of passengers. At 6 o'clock in the morning he went to work, ending at 9 in the evening, he even knew once that he was running all day without shutting down the engine. The car is very good, the best generation of Golf (Mk5) after the legendary Golf Mk2. This Mk5 is still driving, without problems. Fuel in Bosnia and Herzegovina is bad, but that's not a problem for Golf. It was purchased as a used car in 2010 with 105000 km and started operating in Taxi in 2010 and ended with Taxi on 5.5.2018. Equipped with Bi Xenon Headlights, Fog Lights, Headlight Sprayers, Parking Sensors, Beige Interior with Leather, Fridge in Every Box, Seat Heating, Large Board Computer, Multifunction Steering Wheel, 4x Electric Lift, Arm Rests, Electric Mirror Assembly, Heating rearview mirrors, Mirror mirrors, Factory Tinted Glass, Sunroof, RCD 300 with all options, light and rain sensors and more equipment.

My Mk 5, 2008 Rabbit with the 2.5L 5-cylinder, 170 hp engine and Tiptronic transmission have been wonderful with no oil consumption or timing chain issues. All I've had to do is change fluids and replace the seal on the vacuum pump for the brake booster. Everything else is scheduled maintenance. It only has 150,000 miles on it, so it is too soon to tell how bad it is.

Good review but also in Europe the golf 5 was produced in late 2004. The golf mk4 was produced untill 2004. My golf mk5 1.4 Fsi has a lot of problems from aging. Even at 48.000km I had to replace the electronic box that regulates the exhaust fumes. Common problem with this model. After 10 years central locking does not work anymore. Also both my side mirrors came loose. Luckily I saw it in time and could reglue them with special heat resistant loctite. No problems with my time-chain but had to be tightend after 170.000km because it was loose. Also around this time I had to replace the entire clutch system with a new one. Now I have the problem with the fexible piece under the engine that connects with the ecxaust because it's breaking wich means I have loss of power. Do you recommend replacing this and also a new exhaust?

Engine seems to run smooth and same thing applies to clutch, suspension is nice too, really no faults as of right now. Still a bit paranoid though 😂because most people don’t like the 2.0 and this will be my daily, but it tends to be issues the TDI, not the SDI, so hopefully I won’t be going bankrupt anytime soon.

Pay attention to the timing chain which can be worn-rattling noise after cold or sometimes warm start, then there can be also carbon build up or worn turbocharger. Check for leaks, the engine have to be smooth on idle and it shouldn't make some strange noises. Also try to use mainly premium fuel becuse of the direct injection. If the previous owner took good care of it, and if the timing chain is ok-it is often worn around 62 000 mi, then it can be a good choice.

Waste of time. Better off saving a bit more and getting a GTI instead. If you don’t have the budget for that, get a 1.9 TDI.

Loved golf but couldnt understand the rabbit name as a kid. Later learned that was another name for it. But since the mk5 strictly went by either rabbit or gti in US i was like wtf. You go from mk4 golf to mk5 rabbit uhh not the same car or name?!? Anyway they made them from 05 to 08 for the 06 to 09 model years for america. There was nothing prior only overseas.

I have a 2007 GT sport TDi 170bhp since 2010 so has it for good 10years and had no issues at all apart from DPF as I don’t drive it much on the motorway(highway) which is easily sorted when you just get onto the motorway drive it for 15-20mins at 50mhp on 3rd gear... so this guy talks shit... if you maintain your car and look after it then it will look after you xxxxx

Exactly, i have the same car from new to this day, and apart from a factory recall for a couple of things, the BMN engine has been totally reliable, as has the DSG gearbox. It gets regular maintainence and oil/filters like any vehicle.

They are not great cars. I got a 2004 1600 fsi. 90000 miles. Spent about a grand so far on it because it's second hand and old. I never get another one. !!! Wish I got something else, well a motorbike. I now got a noise somewhere underneath. Sounds awful like the suspension is all loose but it's not. I've looked all underneath , swaybar, rods etc. Had recent mot, new ball joint and coil spring fitted .. Nothing loose. But can hear something very loose. All suspension seems solid with no exesiv movement. Steering is ok.

the 1.6 l petrol engine is a good choice and it is reliable -the engine should be smooth on idle without strange noises -The car should ride smoothly whitout some vibrations or strange noises -Also check the paintjob-it should look the same on all the body panels -change the coolant and brake fluid after 2 years/or after buying -the car should have regular maintance history too
