A few points to help to keep this nice looking GTi as trouble free as possible. The wings rust as there are big lumps of foam under the front wings designed to deaden sound / vibration and are located above the wheel arch liners. They retain moisture and so encourage rusting. It seems crazy that VW thought these were a good idea! They should be removed from all mk 5 Golfs ASAP. The plastic components on the orange dipstick crack with age and drop into the sump and can be sucked up by the oil pick up pipe. Only fixed with a sump clean. The latest version is yellow and you can buy a dipstick tube to match. If you are planning to tune the car you will probably upgrade the fuel pump. This puts extra pressure on the cam follower and so it should be changed more often than 20K miles.

On mine before going stage 2+, We done the main thermostat, cam follower, oil pickup pipe cleaned along with the sump, revision g diverter valve, new PCV valve and keep on top of general services with use of quantum 5w40 oil and make sure dsg Serviced regualer with genuine parts. I think that's everything 😁 Need to get cam belt and water pump sorted soon though.

I owned a 2008 MK5 GTI in Candy White for a good portion of my 20s. I thoroughly loved that car and had a blast with it. My favorite hatchback ever built in terms of aesthetics. It didn't stay stock for very long but I like to think I made some pretty tasteful choices. H&R coilovers for about a 2" drop all around, may have been a hair over or under I can't remember for sure but that was my ideal height for the MK5. Should've came that way from the factory but I digress. Had no interest in bagging it. Eventually swapped the stock 17s for OZ Ultraleggeras 18" in black. Think 18"s were the best fit for the GTI personally. Had the interlagos plaid-style interior and I fucking loved it. Performance wise I had a custom turbo-back exhaust fabbed for the car since it was needed for anything beyond a stage 1 tune. It was similar to a CTS kit you'd buy today. Gave the car a really nice growl at low rpm but it didn't drone too bad and it still wasn't overly loud at all, very much still a daily driver. Then the ecu was flashed by Revo to Stage 2. I didn't goto stage 2+/3 because I didn't want to change out the k03. I almost went with APR for the tune but I tried out both APR and Revo's stage 1 tunes and felt Revo was a little more aggressive. Back then, idk if you still can, but they'd let you trial their stage 1 tunes for a couple hours and then the ecu would revert back to stock after a certain amount of time. I can't even remember if they charged me to do that or not but yea, eventually settled on Revo. It had a neuspeed intake as well just to hear the diverter valve a bit more, that's really it. I had the car dyno'd once a couple years before I sold it and it was making about 270whp @ 7000rpm and almost exactly the same amount of torque from what I recall. Was great because that little k03 spooled up so quick and you'd hit peak torque real fast. That was enough power for me in that car. I ended up selling the car a couple years ago and I still miss it every day. The good thing was it stayed in the family, I ended up selling it to a cousin who drooled over it every time he saw it lol. Probably could've gotten a little more for it because I gave him a family discount but the bonus is I still get to see it often and I still get to drive it once in awhile. The only real problems I ever had with it were various electrical gremlins from time to time, but that's pretty typical with VW & Audis. Never had any major issues with the FSI motor beyond normal maintenance items.

Have you much experience of these cars or just read up on all these issues on forums? The front wings are a issue as you correctly state but there is a modification to remove vibration dampening which holds water against the wing this causes the rust. This should be removed, it is under the wheel arch liner. Corrosion to the sills is also an issue on these cars, it’s hidden by the sill spoiler. Also rear arches can start to rust from the inside lip. No real issues with the tail gate, that’s a mk4 issue. Another issue is radiator fans, the motors have two speeds and they burn out. This occurs on the gti and R32. This TSI engine is prone to carbon build up, check it starts from cold without any misfires. It should start on the first attempt. Sunroof can leak, check this if fitted. And the big one you missed is door lock modules! One of the most common mk5 failures! They are expensive and to replace them you have to remove the door skin since the door internals are all accessed this way. Can be a bit of a nightmare to refit the door skin as aligning it up can be tricky.Thermostats do not fail often and no more than any other car. You should check for head gasket failures before that!

just a little further information that was provided by the specialist I use for my Stage 2+ Pirelli - the cam follower should be changed every 10k if the car is tuned. Equally the DSG should be serviced more regular if remapped during tuning, around 40k miles. The other potential issue is in addition to the cam belt, these cars also have a chain which have been know to cause issues after around 60k miles, so need to be monitored when old. Good video!

Bought the car, did full tune up and fluid flush and did an intake and exhaust right iff the bat. Ive since bought a bigger intercooler, bigger turbo, injectors etc. Thats all going on soon along with some tuning obviously. Expecting the setup to make 320hp/360tq to the wheels. Its sitting at 266 now. Engine has 240,000km on it and a compression test shows its still 95% of new. Car had been maintained well before me. Love the car as a second fun car.

A non age related number plate would suit it well. To the non Golf expert such as myself with such a plate it would hide its age very well - it doesn’t appear to look it age physically, possibly because of the ‘detailing’ you had done. It looks to me like it’s a couple of years and perhaps 15k miles old.

Think you have good intentions but you are waffling about things you have no idea about that you simply read up on or asked someone? Diverter valve doesn’t cause a boost leak, the diaphragm inside splits and stops the pipe holding the boost up, so it’s not a leak to atmosphere The cam follower? I think you mean the high pressure fuel pump cam follower, pump that is at the top right hand side of the engine as you look at it? Very very rarely they wear through, they are £20, change it yourself in 30 mins, hardest part is getting the lower fuel pipe off if you change the entire pump over You forgot about the rear trailing arms rotting away You forgot to mention that if any door lock mechanism fails you will have to cut the outer door skin off to get to the lock to open it and then replace it all, at great expense Mechatronic unit WILL fail on a DSG car, jolting when you come to a standstill or pulling away from standstill will happen soon enough if it isn’t already New mechatronic unit is 1k just for the part Dash binnacle will also light up like a Christmas tree at some point and need replacing All Something to look forward to eh 👍🏻😂

Codes out headlight washers “idiot”. Police can pull you over if your lights are dirty enough. The “limescale” around the rear badge is road salt, which is going to show up more on a black car. As for the water behind the boot latch. Just make sure you dry it out after washing. It’s not rocket science!
