    My 99 vr6 gti turned 21 this year. Love it and it still looks nearly new. Great paint quality, that's for sure, especially in the harsh climate of the Midwest (US). Yes, I've had to put some money into it (throttle body, rear main seal, etc) but I just can't get rid of it. Every time I bring it in for something, I get people wanting to buy it. One part that consistently has needed to be changed out is the mass air flow sensor. That said, that's an easy thing to do it yourself. Takes 10 mins and saves you hundreds off what a mechanic charges.

    Haha just posted a short of the wife's old 99.5 gls vr6 we bought as a pre-owned in 2001 with 18k. It was a daily until 2012 when at 130k it was due for chains. By late 2019 it was time to fix it after sitting in the garage. So I went thru the whole thing ,yanked the engine and replaced the chains and anything else that needed replacement. Ran great! Then I cut the roof off😮 Yep, it's a Smyth Ute now and will be on the road here for late spring 2023.

    I had a 2000 two-door Golf with the two-liter engine, one of four engine choices in America. My biggest problems were the alternator, the left window regulator, and the coil pack. The interior was mostly well done but the plastic surfaces on the interior door handles wore off and I even had to glue the interior molding back on when it fell off. Nevertheless, I kept that car going for eleven and a half years and 86,000 miles before I traded it in for a 2012 Mk6. The dealer was shocked at how well kept it was after all that time! :-)

    Im a mk1/2 guy at heart. With that being said, we always used ro rip on those Mk4 kids so bad 😂 I had one also,but its a driver for the wife. Somehow in 2012 it ended up being parked in my garage for almost 8yrs, in need of timing chains. Of course it needed everything else from sitting. So in late 2019 i beought it ro my shop and started the resurrection. 6mo of a few evenings a week and some weekend nights and it was mint again. Then i cut the roof off😮 Yup, its now a Smyth Ute and will be rolling by late spring 2023. Dare i say the mk4 platform is one of the most durable and repairable platforms? As i drive alot for work ,i still see at least a few every day driving around here in the northeast in 2023. Being the newest mk4 is pushing like 18yrs old, thats pretty impressive. Anything newer is getting complicated for the home projects. Mk5? Yeah maybe but they're ugly 😂

    2:22 The only MK4 Golf body style with the 2.8L engine is the GTI VR6. The 2004 R32 is the only MK4 Golf body style with the 3.2L engine. 3:07 The 2.8L VR6 and 3.2L R32 are each equipped with timing chains, not timing belts. The chains are supposed to be a lifetime part, however, many owners replace them, and more importantly the timing chain guides, after a number of miles (depending on preference and how the car has been driven) to avoid catastrophic failure of the engine as a result of timing chain guide failures.

    @RedondoBeach2

    @@Catman1987 I apologize for getting carried way with this long response. Bottom line, I cannot answer your question because there are different perspectives on the answer. First, check with an authorized VW mechanic for the most up-to-date information on this concern. Second, I'm not aware that VW has any maintenance interval for the timing chain, guides or tensioners. I believe they view these components as lifetime components on my 2004 GTI VR6. Your specific model year may be different. Owners/mechanics have different opinions. Many agree the components need to be replaced but there's a lack of consensus on a suggested replacement interval. Generally, the maintenance is done based on stories of (1) hearing an unusual noise in the engine bay, at the timing chain cover, which may be the sound of a guide or tensioner that has partially failed but still doing its job of keeping the timing chain in place; (2) a catastrophic engine failure attributed to guides or tensioners failing, resulting in the timing chain skipping teeth, resulting in cam shafts getting out of time with the crank shaft, resulting in valves making contact with pistons - - catastrophic engine failure. So, what's the thinking on what causes this issue? Again different opinions. First, it's important that VW's recommended maintenance is performed on time, as recommended. Specifically, oil changes. The manual gives two options for oil weights based on climate. Personally, I use 5W-40 which is one of the two recommendations for my car. Can't remember the other oil weight at this time but your local dealership will know what's best for yours. 5W-40 is a synthetic oil which has the added benefit of lasting longer than other oils. My GTI is driven relatively few miles each year. Regardless, the oil gets changed once a year, every January. When I drain it, it's very clean. Others may need to change theirs more frequently based on miles driven. Mine is changed based on a calendar interval I set as a personal preference, not a VW recommendation. The annual oil change gives peace of mind that if any atmospheric moisture is getting into the engine oil, it's flushed out at least once a year. Probably overkill but a small investment in keeping the engine running in optimal condition and possibly adding life to the timing chain/guides/tensioner. Another opinion on why the guides/tensione might fail is due to the way the car is driven. Some say that if the engine is regularly driven in a "spirited" way (high RPM), or subject to harsh down shifts (engine braking to slow the car), this increases the rate of ware to the timing chain/guides/tensioner. Personally, I don't downshift for the purpose of slowing the car. I'd rather burn through brake rotors. Much easier/cheaper to change rotors. Others believe a lack of a maintenance interval might have been an oversight on VW's part, or that when VW determined that these are lifetime components, they did not intend "lifetime" to imply the cars would still be on the road today. My '04 GTI is now 18 years old. Far older than the average car on the road today. Aside from getting advice from an authorized VW mechanic, the best resource I can point you to is www.vwvortex.com/forums/ A great community of people who have in depth knowledge on nearly every concern related to these cars. I hope this helped at least a little.

    I have a 2.0 and must say that I've had quite a lot of problems, but that is to be expected as I bought it for twice the scrap value (5000 DKK -$800), so really cheap. It already had problems when I bought it and was quite neglected. It drove on 3 cylinders as one of the piston rings had snapped, and had been parked in the driveway for 3-4 months after that so it really needed a hand to get up to part. I've now had it for 2 years and while there have been several repairs and trips to the mechanic I'm still happy with it.

Also, get a carfax report or something to be sure it hasn't been in an accident where the frame could be damaged.

    really depends on your location and availability of replacement parts. the car is around 20 years old so some more driven cars will need lots of love. I bought a 1.6 as my first car and it served me very well, it's extremely cheap for me to replace or modify parts; fuel, registration, taxes and insurance aren't to much but there is enough power to get you not only around town but also feel powerful while keeping you reeled in as a beginner. tldr: depending on availability of parts its extremely cheap and reliable. go get one!

    you are wrong,there are more diesel engines than that,i know at least 5,also to common problems you should mention steering column,it is one of the weak spots on this kind of car,when test driving,you should turn steering wheel quickly left and right and if you feel slight knocking,you have a bad column,other than that,these are really nice cars,i have a 99 diesel with 81kw with 350000km on the clock and it still runs great.

    I bought a 2003 1.6 Individual Automatic from a car dealer in Pretoria (South Africa) in July 2019. Pretty nice car for its age, but unfortunately the dealer was not honest about the condition of the car and within a first few hundred kilometres, the signs of wearing started showing. Now I'm stuck with a car that I've spent too much money to sell and get a decent amount of my money back. On the other side, a load of work still has to be done to get it to decent shape. Sitting with a catch-22. Decide to try and restore the car over time. That's all I can do.
