Absolutely the most beautiful BMW ever created. Too bad humans are afraid of change and BMW went back to a more boring styling design. The F10 looks like a bigger version of a 3 series for those people who could afford to pay more. Outside of the Bangle Years, people could tell how much money you could afford by which series (3, 5, 7) you drove. In the Bangle Years, I would by the 5 over the 7 because it is a prettier car and not just a cheaper version of a 7 series. The Bangle designed BMWs Z4, 5, 6, and 7 series sedans and coupes (except for the timid 3 series) were the best looking ever.

I agree. I have a 2007 E60 520d. I bought it back in 2016 and it had 105.000kms. I LOVE that car. Never, ever had a problem with it. It gets maintenance every 15.000kms and it has 190.000 kms now. Although I love the car, I am planning on replacing it with an F10 530d, mainly because of government regulations on diesel engines. My E60 is class EURO 4 and starting from 2020, certain cities will be banning Euro 4 cars, or they will only get limited acces provided that you pay an 'eco tax'..

I am a journeyman auto mechanic and my personal vehicle is a 545i. The v8 is very nice but it does come with its problems: Oil leaks, coolant leaks, oil burning though the valve stem seals, etc. The good news is if you are relatively handy, these repairs can be done at home with a moderate amount of skill level. Also, online resources are available and very helpful. I could never afford to own this car if I had to pay someone to do the repairs for me, so bear that in mind when looking to purchase. The v8 engine in these is smooth as silk and will put a smile on your face when working properly.

@@fabioonel696 You're very welcome. My view on hearing or reading views on the internet and forums is that you only ever get one side of the story, the negative side, no-one ever goes on to say positive things. Therefore I take it with a pinch of salt because there's thousands of these cars out there and they can't all go wrong. I use these reviews as what areas to keep an eye on rather than making a decision for me. I've had plenty of cars and had issues but few were mentioned in forums etc.

I remember how much of a bashing these cars got for the styling back when they were new. But I must say, time has been very kind to them! Not only do they look a decade newer than they really are, but in general they are proving to be well made, and certainly much less rust-prone than older BMWs. As a die-hard fan of the E38-46 era BMWs I never thought I would want one of these but lately I am starting to reconsider. The 530d in particular is a really, really good car!

owned multiple bmws from E36 323i, e46 325i, E39 530i to name a few, also got the misses a 1 series. so decided to pick up a 2004 e60 530d m sport package pre face lift, with only 79000 on clock, that was 16 month ago, since then it's not skipped a beat, I've just clocked 120000, it's been the most reliable beamer I've owned. I understand that some bmws will and do have many problems, cause it's happened to me many times, but bmws aren't that bad to work on, they do seem daunting at first but the way they are engineered makes it quite easy to get in there yourself. big mistake people make is running straight to a bmw dealer to get things fixed, that's why it cost so much. bmws have a wealth of online forums, how to videos and you can find any part or specialised tool at reasonable prices if you are willing to look and do it Yourself. I'm sure my e60 is gonna be with me for a long time to come, it's has been one of, if not the best all rounder bmw I've owned, and has the looks that are contemporary today.

Really great review. I own 2009 BMW E60 with 80k miles on it. Generally speaking, N52 is a great engine if well maintained. If you change oil every 6 months, you will minimize the oil leak and potential sensor problems due to oil leak. Water pump is definitely issue, generally fails around 80k miles but there are some cars with 150k miles still have the original pump and thermostat (combined costs around 350 dollars if DIY), so nobody really knows why. I would recommend changing coolant every 2 years of course using OEM BMW coolant. Transmission is very strong ZF 6, if you do not drive like crazy, it usually does not fail. Lastly, injectors, yea they may start leaking which will results in long crank at first start. You can definitely live it. Otherwise, car is not that expensive to maintain. Key thing is doing it yourself.

I had a 2006 pre-LCI E60 530d MSport for two years a few years ago. 50k miles when I bought it. It was fast, handled brilliantly and generally was good to drive. But it broke down... a lot. Failed thermostats (3 in 2 years!), including a nearly new one that burst open. Burnt out starter motor. 2 dead batteries in 2 years. Glow plugs all needed replacing. Navigation failed. Steering lock failed. Particulate filter kept blocking up as it generally refused to re-generate for some random reason.... I sold it in the end and re-commissioned my old 1998 E39 540i that had been off the road for a while. Five years later, I'm still driving it. Its a MUCH better 5 series!

Many good points here but a little fault in the diesel alternatives. The n47s for the E6* series is mainly just as the 150hp LCI models. At least here in Norway we have the much more reliable and easier maintenance vice, m47, that contains both 163 and 177hp in the LCI and non LCI models.

I had a 2006 525i in Titanium Silver Metallic it was very reliable up till 150.000 miles then I had to replace the electric water pump, thermostat, injectors, and various oil gaskets, also had all four corners of suspension fail at 160,000 miles which were replaced. The i6 motor left me wanting more power even in the steptronic mode with traction control off but it was an excellent highway car it had very good noise cancellation in cabin. I am a USA Electrician used the car as my daily driver and packed the trunk full of tools and it handled the heavy cargo excellently. Very fluffy and comfortable seats but I did have the leg support go out also the well known poor quality front slide out cup holders which broke a few times. I lost my key fob once and I had to also pay for a new key modular and programming as well as two new key fobs which totaled almost $1600 for this issue (don't lose your key!) various electrical issues and I drive problems also occurred which ended up costing more than mechanical failures. So be mindful. All around I loved my e60 and I will still recommend buying one if you find one well maintained. 👍🏻

All of them but one, you mention: Air suspension, Swirl intake plaques, and Bluetooth module/CCC. The important one you missed is the change of the oil recovery filter. The original design (sponge) changed around 3 years later (gravity) and is the one to install. Must do it yourself if not taken to the BMW dealer for revisions. (And sometimes, even if so) For the rest,... liquids and filters and works like a Clydesdale horse. Thanks for the report!

Here on the Balkans the 530D is considered as one of the most reliable cars you can buy. Just like the 320D of the previous generation. The problem simply is that people don’t service these cars regularly, engine oil, transmission oil and differential oil. And cars like these only deserve the highest quality oils like Castrol and not some cheap oil that you bought for 4€ at your local gas station. Had a great experience with my e46 320d the only thing that broke in the 70.000km I drove it was an electronic part on the injector pump which I fixed for 160€. As of now I’ve done 20.000km on my 530D and had no issues whatsoever, let’s hope it stays like this.

Good review. I drive a 2005 e61 530d and I definitely recognise the main defects you mention. The engine is a real pleasure and the gearbox (if well taken care off) very smooth as well. The suspension level system is of bad quality and you would not expect such an engineering mistake from BMW. The headlights fade after a while as well, I haven’t found a good solution yet for it (polishing etc) On mine the IBS sensor has been changed by the previous owner and also a new steering pump. Had a broken coil spring, these are heavy engines. Other than that I haven’t experienced any major mechanical issues yet after 100k miles on the clock. Will try to maintain it as you are supposed to because I want to drive many more miles in it.

Since the timing chain change in 2015 I've remarked a stronger engine noise than before, but so far nothing to note on the reliability part. It's true that it is an expensive car to maintain because in the last 2 years I've spent over 7000 EUR on maintenance but this includes new 17" rims with new tyres, new clutch kit, new shock absorbers front and back, new brake discs front and back, new handbrake, 2 new air intake tubes, and all the oil changes with all the filters done at 15.000 km (don't wait 30.000 km as BMW says - it's way too much). All in all I'm happy with the car, it drives great and I have an average consumption of 6.7 l/100 km.

My story and my opinion: I have a 2010 528i that I bought a year ago which just reached 100K miles. I've owned a 2003 535i most recently that ran until 250K before it started having major issues. Someone who owned it previously mystve been a kid that put an M steering wheel on it though it wasn't an M. She was cranky and had obviously been beat on. She was given to me after my accident with my previous car, my prized 2007 528i which I hit a deer with, and didn't have full coverage insurance on it (so didn't have enough to fix it). The 07 had vanos problems, worn rubber trim, leaks, cold starting issues, but I understood it's issues and worked with it until Mr. Deer decided he owned the road. I had a 93 328i prior to that which drove like a dream for a few years until one day it caught fire under the hood with an electrical failure. Couldn't afford to have it fixed. I am a BMW woman. When I got in each one (other than the 03 which was hurting) I always thought each was better than the last. My current 2010, is luxury driving. Soft drive, way softer than earlier versions. On cold days I'm always freezing. I crank heat and turn on heated seats and steering wheel. Within 5 minutes I'm warming up. Within 15 minutes the wheel is hot, I'm toasty warm and praising Jesus. *Recent problems here in Sub zero New York:* in freezing cold 0° weather with wind chill warnings at 20° below, it tried hard, and succeeded at starting. My father's 2014 Honda Civic and sisters 2010 Honda Accord both failed to start. (So please don't tell us to buy Japanese). Yay BMW. However, during that cold snap last week, a high beam went out. Then, the heat refused to blow out any more than minimal force of air, no matter where it was set on the dial. Turning it all the way up did nothing, until the car was warmed up. Not sure why, because now it works ok. I fear it had a stroke due to the cold. But I digress. Strangely, I got in it today and the other high beam went out, and it was odd, because it was as soon as I turned the beams on. The blue high beam light on the dash flickered, then went out. So I shut the beams off, then turned back on. No high beams came on, but blue light did come back on, as did the "Warning" on idrive. So now I have no high beams at all. Being a woman, I'll have no choice but to take it somewhere to get it fixed, and right now I don't have the money to fix it. I believe for true die hard BMW owners, many of us are largely German descent. We take great pride in products put out by the countries our ancestors came from. We don't want someone messing something up, accidently slipping with a wrench and pretending it never happened, giving us the wrong oil, or trying to rip us off pretending they know something about German cars when they don't. We only want the best to work on them, yet not rip us off. With that, the worst thing about owning a BMW isn't what goes wrong with them. It's finding someone you'll ALLOW to touch it let alone look at it, at a price that won't bankrupt us. We also rarely believe people have any idea of what they're talking about with BMW, unless they've owned at least 2 of them or work on them constantly, daily, as a career. We trust no one. At least that's what I've seen in other bmw owners as well as myself. So, call us snobs, but we are just as confused when something goes wrong with out little bar of gold, and yet if you look at it wrong, we will slap you one. That is true love.

A lot of info in 10 minutes. Nice! You could mention that 145, 170 and 210kw M57 are made out of aluminum (M57D30TÜ2), and all other M57 (older) are cast iron.

How often do timing chains snap on facelifted M57 (525D and 530D) engines? Many say that 250KKm (150K Miles) starts to be critical. Thx!
