As a follow up to the video we published a couple weeks back on the 2016 Tesla Model S 85D, we're looking at a 'modern' Tesla with all the latest cameras, sensors, and tech hardware to show us what a Tesla is really about. Our 2018 Tesla Model 3 Long Range Dual Motor gives us the best idea of what the typical Canadian Tesla experience would be like. With an original range over 500km, and our as-tested range just shy of that at the end of winter, the Tesla Model 3 gives you an AWD electric compact executive car with more tech than we've seen in other electric cars.
We spend a lot of time talking about the differences from the Model S we drove, including the exterior design changes, updated front end, and the technology implemented in this car. The Model 3 has 9 cameras, 12 ultrasonic sensors, and a forward-facing radar to enable the full self driving mode, allowing you to enter a destination on the navigation system and have the car drive you there. Those cameras also operate the regular Auto Pilot system, Sentry Mode, and DashCam. We explain the NFC key card and how the low energy Bluetooth phone app work.
We jump inside our black leather Model 3 to go over the changes on the inside, including the new 15.4" landscape infotainment system. As with the Model S, everything is controlled through the main screen along with even fewer buttons on the car. To change the mirror positions or move the steering wheel you need to use the screen, along with adjust the direction of the front air vents, or open the glove box. The Mercedes-Benz interior bits we saw on the Model S are now replaced with Tesla-designed gear & turn signal stocks, along with window switches and a push-button to open the doors. The NFC key card needs to be placed near the cup holders in order to start the vehicle, along with pushing the brake pedal in.
We go over the interior space and feel of the Model 3, along with the overall build quality, and functionality of the Model 3. Space in the rear is functional for both kids and adults, and now features centre air vents, two USB ports, a centre armrest, and two cup holders. We found the driver's seating position to be much better in this vehicle, with a lower seat bottom and better overall headroom in any seat. We discuss some of the infotainment changes including the different feature and layout as there's no gauge cluster screen.
We take the 2018 Tesla Model 3 Dual Motor on a comprehensive road test to talk about how this EV performs, drives, handles, and rides in everyday situations. We produce two 0-100km speed tests clearly on a closed, private course to see how fast the Model 3 is in normal mode, as our test vehicle didn't come with the optional Sport mode. We show some of the Full Self Driving Mode in action on the highway, along with how it handles an exit.
We then go over some of the things buyers should be aware of when looking at a used Tesla Model 3, including some of the initial issues owners experienced and reported, along with some of the data we've found from owners today who have these cars.

    Jesus that second acceleration was violent, and that is not the performance model lol. Honestly best electric vehicle there is with great charging infrastructure. This is the car that has killed 3 series and c class and A4. Did you try to charge at supercharger stations and see how long at charging stations that takes from empty? Simply the best small sedan in the world electric or gas. All they got to do is give us good looking SUVs and trucks.

    I know, right! I think me trying to do a 'launch' the first time messed it up, because the second time was just bonkers. That's why I'm very curious to see one of the Performance models, because for me this one was plenty fast for what I want haha. I did use the Supercharger in Drummondville for this one, although only for about 20 minutes just to test it out. Cost me $3 to get about 80km of range or so. I didn't get the battery low enough to really use it to its fullest extent, I do a lot less driving now and I think I only put about 400km on this car in total during my week.

    What amazes me is the Model 3 efficiency, especially now it has a heat pump. The main negative for me is that the Tesla service centers and mobile techs seem over stretched - maybe this is due to the huge increase in sales.

    That's another element of reviewing these that's hard to gauge, the service experience. I personally haven't seen any of Tesla's mobile servicing trucks here, I saw one once back in Ontario before moving. I can definitely see that being annoying if you need something worked on and the process isn't smooth.

    Hey Nile great review as always. My one concern with Tesla is the long term reliability on these vehicles. Once these are out of their 8 year powertrain warranty, these are going to be super expensive to fix especially if you need to have a battery replaced. Who knows what the future will hold maybe by then batteries will last 300,000 miles or there will be an abundance of aftermarket options available. You have a pretty low mileage example in this video, but buying one of these used just kinda scares me lol.

  • @PRNTestDrive

    @PRNTestDrive

    There's no doubt that the long-term cost of ownership can be a serious issue, with Tesla's overall stand on the right-to-repair, or lack thereof, buyers will more or less be forced to service and replace their batteries at Tesla. Down the road perhaps less expensive battery replacements will become available, which would help. The week I had the Model S though someone hit 1,000,000 kms on their Model S. I also know of a Tesla enthusiast out in Québec City with over 300,000km on his, and that was a couple years ago last time I saw.

    The issue with aftermarket parts and batteries is that there's nothing stopping Tesla from implementing some form of DRM to block "unauthorized" after market parts. I.e. they could brick the car for "safety" if they detect parts not purchased from Tesla.

    does the model 3 long range come with autopilot or do you have to pay

  • @PRNTestDrive

    @PRNTestDrive

    It seems like Tesla will make you pay for it, essentially the autopilot software is like a license, once you sell the vehicle that license doesn’t transfer, so as a new owner you’d have to pay Tesla for it.

    A lot in these new Teslas is honed down for modern American luxury taste - performance. I am glad Lincoln is coming (as PHEV and later with EVs) back with OLD American luxury taste - comfort of the ride which by the way is very sought after in China as well (That is the case of main competition of NIO vs Tesla in China). I hope other manufacturers will follow the trend. Besides lots of folks are happier being in open software environment such as in: Android auto and Apple car play rather than proprietary Tesla only software environment. Who knows maybe Tesla rather later will embrace some of these points. (Even Windows 10 started to propose a bult-in linux kernel in the latest editions for extra functionality). Extreme price of reparation and hard to get by finding customer care is still a huge concern in Tesla world. Besides, out of warranty Tesla is a huge pain to maintainm. And when no buttons are available and the main screen turns black in the new Tesla the vehicle is not operable. (When my Toyota Prius 2005 dashboard screen turns black once in a while I have to use GPS as a speedometer but car is drivable). I have to admit in both cases the system resets and both the screen/dashboard pannel start working but it is dangerous to get stranded on the highway in very cold winter away from the city. Meantime, in between Winnipeg and Calgary in Canada and between Minnesota and Montana in the USA in February, at real low temperatures, driving long distances even in this vehicle is still scary/terrifying due to insufficient recharging infrastructure. However, in my opinion, Tesla is still an excellent vehicle in the right time, place, purpose of use and with an appropriate person driving it.

    I was disappointed a few weeks back, I was scheduled to take the Lincoln Aviator PHEV but I was given the gas model I already did before. I'm looking forward to drive some of Lincoln's electric offerings as I really like what they've been doing over the past several years with their take on luxury.

    @@PRNTestDrive Many folks, me included, would be very happy to watch your video review of Lincoln Corsair PHEV which being AWD is a true fuel economy leader in luxury segment surpassed only by Toyota RAV4 Prime as an AWD. However even Toyota RAV4 Prime is in nonluxury segment and competes with Ford Escape PHEV despite the latter one comes as only FWD. To be honest the AWD in Toyota is electric while Lincoln Corsair PHEV promises a mechanical AWD thus better handling in deep snow but with worse fuel economy. Thanks.
