Tesla Model 3 After 100,000 Miles! (This was Unexpected!)

I found a Tesla Model 3 with 111,700 MILES! He drives it a TON for work. It's a 2018 Model so he's had it for 5 years. Guess how much he spent on service issues, charging, everything??

I'm glad you did this video. 5 years is a pretty good bench mark. All in all, not to bad. I keep my cars until they're wore out. Currently a 2012 basic Nissan Altima. I bought it new and currently i have 213,768 miles with no issues. 5 sets of tires, 2 batteries and ??? Oil changes, 1 radiator flush and 2 basic tune ups. I do hope one day to own an electric car though. But being in my sixties the window is closing. Lol Great video bud. ❤ 💯 👍

Thanks for the video! This helps me gauge how well my own 2021 model 3 LR AWD compares(3 year ownership, ~61,000 miles). For anyone digging through the comments, I can share what I spent for it. 1. Full Purchase: net $43000($47000 listed, $1000 shipping, $5000 state rebate, no sales tax) 2. Auto Insurance: ~$2000/yr =$6000 3. Tires: One replacement for $365(dealer, costco price $250/tire) 4. Balance and Rotation: ~3-4 per year, $25/visit at costco = ~$225-$300 5. Detail: ~3-4 per year, $75 per visit (interior and exterior from a friend) = ~$450-$575 6. Home Charging Setup: $180 (electrical box upgraded to fit another 240V connection) 7. Charging: Done mostly at work, free for 2.5 hrs per session, paid ~$100/yr, otherwise only-at-home costs $50/month = ~300 + 250 = ~$550 8. Two windshield replacements under insurance and service warranty respectively 9. Car Cover(used mostly for hot, sunny days): ~$120 10. Filters: Wanted filter replacement but had a sort of steam-cleaning instead at dealer: ~$150 11. Temperature sensor replaced, trunk closing mechanism fixed, and I believe a backseat seatbelt fix from recall and/or warranty 12. Some computer freezeups/bugs, but usually resolved with OTA update or a simple restart. Noticed freezeups happen more often the hotter/sunnier the weather is. Estimated Total excluding inital purchase: $8,115

how about wheel alignment? Generally a total scam. The wheels don't need to be aligned on nearly new car, unless you ran into a curb or hit a huge pothole. They will usually say they adjusted it by 0.01 or something similarly absurd. And they easily charge $150 and more for it. If it's not broken don't fix it.

I just traded in my 2020 Model 3 for a 2023 Model Y. I’m a roadtrip warrior so I built up 115k miles on my M3 and it was still going strong with the occasional visit to the service center for new tires/rotation front suspension replaced twice, a low voltage battery replacement once and that’s it. If it weren’t for the 120k warranty on the battery and motors I would have kept it; however with the Model Y I now have more space and a newer and better vehicle. I hope to have the same luck with my Y as I did with the 3. Never buying another gas car again although I do have a backup gas car that I rarely drive but still get the needed maintenance on.

Great video Chris as usual. Just wanted to share my 3 year experience with my 2020 MY. I brought it in for the first time just to see what they would do. I paid roughly $200 CAD for things like tire rotation, brake fluid checks, Clean/Lubricate brake calipers. They also wanted to change the cabin air filters for another $100 ($35 and 20min of your time to do yourself). My advice to all Tesla owners is to learn these basic maintenance if you dont know it already and dodge these fees. Of course dont be afraid to take the car in if you experience any other more major issues. I already had experience with all these repairs/replacements but figured Id pay the $200 to double check if I missed anything. Cheers Tesla Fam!

TCO should include depreciation. This can easily make up for or wipe out all the other costs. I would check comparable private party asking prices on Auto Trader (forget KBB) and subtract that from the original sales price to get the figure. I bought my used Model S at a time when they appeared to hold their value really well, but then Elon bought prices down by $40k on new ones, which by itself wiped out about $20k of value on top of typical historical depreciation (not counting the used car value fluctuations in 2020-2022)..

Great video. If you are comparing between luxury brands. What I wonder is how many people that are buying luxury brands care about optimizing costs that much? If you really cared about optimizing cost the BMW would not be the comparison and as such depreciation would be a huge factor in this decision. People are likely to spend 18-25k in depreciation over the 5 year period. For those that can get a model 3 from 2018 with 50-70k miles it does seem like a smart purchase for cost optimization given the expected life of 150-200k of the battery at 80%

These are super cheap tesla service costs. In London UK, tesla quoted me £350 (400$)for wheel alignment And £250 (290$)for brake caliper service. Wheel rotation is £40 (50$) £60 (80$) filter replacement I dont dont how much aircon service to replace dessecant bag would cost so assume £150 (200$) So I would have to pay close to £800(950$) for my year 4 service. This is more than a 5 years servicing plan with honda costs.

Hey Chris, just bought a 2018 Model 3 performance with 95K miles for a steal. The third party dealership doesn't know how to delete the last owners account off the vehicle, and on the Tesla App, it tells me to enter VIN, rename the vehicle, submit the Buyers Order, and my ID, and it could take up to 5 days to process. I have a Teala Service Center here in Austin I can go to, do you think it would be quicker? Also, it still has a month of premium service left on it, and I'm pretty sure I smell that same smell you talked about in this video, except I bought it As-Is, with no warranty...

Lifetime Cost of all cars vary according to brand and model.. But I tend to keep my cars 8 years on average.. even though I do have a 20yr old Jeep 170,000 miles too with its major cost only being an occasional parts, fuel and liquids. If you're good at your own maintenance then most older ICE cars you can do yourself and save a lot of money on that side of things yes fuel becomes the greatest expense then. And if you buy the typical 5 year 100,000 mile extended warranty in the purchase your only cost is basically gas and tires ( and brakes if you do a lot of mountain drives like here in California ) . Hondas and Toyotas are the cars to compare to the Model 3, not BMW or Mercedes that would be Model S and X plaid. For all electric cars the battery pack is the elephant in the room, it can cost as much to replace out of warranty as a small used ICE car that gets 40 miles to the gallon like the Honda fit. So Now do a comparison with Honda & Toyota ICE and Hybrid of 5 years ago. Then factor in the resale price around the 7 year mark. You might also think about Lease costs for electric car that may actually cost less? Then you are basically renting the battery and car.

You are mistaken if you believe that the brake fluid needs not flushing due to brake regeneration. Brake fluid absorbs moisture and lowers it boiling point over time. Most of us will not be able to tell the difference unless you are tracking the vehicle. Most companies that actually notice this issue will say every two years and use DOT 4. Which is the best unless you want DOT 5.1, but that is for track use.

  • @NovaPrincess

That price breakdown at 3:01. 😳 The problem with Tesla is that the value is highly over inflated. Aside from the major price cuts because of Tesla loosing market share, buying one used and out of warranty is a huge risk if the EV battery can break down at 50k miles. Your friend paid $14,000 for 'long range', but my 2017 Prius gets over 500 miles on a full tank. I bought the Prius used at $12.5k. So it's crazy that long range and FSD cost as much as entire used Toyotas that last much longer in both range and total miles before break down compares to Tesla model 3 and Y. Yes hybrids and ICE need and oil change, but most people can afford an oil change, not a new EV battery.

@@soils1111 What I am referring to is a "service contract", so "maintenance agreement" (which is also an accepted term) is where the confusion is I believe. So my point is that the cost of a service contract for any given vehicle is based on the projected payout the warranty provider (either OEM or aftermarket) will pay to repair the vehicle over the course of the contract which will allow them to make money selling it. I don't have one for my 2018 S, but I intend to replace it with another before the factor warranty expires. BTW, a service contract for a Tesla does NOT include the traction battery, which is concerning, and why I'll upgrade to a new S before my battery warranty expires.

degredation depends a lot on how you charge (aka fast charge), how often you might charge to 100% and do not drive afterwards and let the battery rest fully charged, how often you drive under full performance and how nice the conditions are aka how warm it is where you are driving avoding temperatures below 5 to 10°C) but that is the guideline only for NON LFP or LiFePo4 battery cars, the usual tesla 18650. But for over 2 years tesla is delivering model 3 from shanghai into the EU instead of american built ones (which were terrible built compared to the chinese one cause we got both) which meant also LFP chemistry. It looks like you have cared a lot about the battery health cause 10% degredation is small. Degredation means - what too many miss - that you compare the range driven on the same day / week / month of the year to avoid deviations cause by seasonal effects. At the end you will need similiar conditions and same drive habits but too many people ignore the temperature or the wind (direction, speed) or even rain and complain first.
