Not really underestimated, when he was young he was immensely popular; on a level with Clint Eastwood. He was a huge movie star. If you mean, his talent was not always recognized, that may be true. He should have won the Oscar for Boogie Nights.

patricia S - I think the problem with his career, although successful, was he took too many “goofball” rolls. Too much comedy. If he took more serious rolls, like he did in the movie “Deliverance,” I think he would’ve been even more successful. Side note: He should’ve got an ironclad prenup with Loni Anderson.

I remember first seeing Burt Reynolds back in the early 80's when I was about 10 years old and I saw how everyone just went crazy. The women wanted him, men wanted to be him, the whole thing. he just seemed like so much fun and had the best life. Even in his best movies he doesn't really seem to be acting or trying to, it always seemed like he was just screwing around on a movie set and they were filming it and everyone was loving it. I grew the same mustache as him at about 16 yrs old and I'm still sporting that stache today. Needless to say seeing Burt Reynolds at 10 sort of created a blue print of the fun loving cool guy that I wanted to be when I grew up. It didn't work out that way of course because at that age I thought you could just be like somebody and that was that, but I am still waiting for this mustache to come back into style.

In esp poor taste when he states Burt had hired him, more than once, to be on Burt's gameshow...yet he still chooses to try disrespect Burt like that after Burt gives him a job! Burt had a VERY LONG history of being extremely gracious & incredibly generous to his fellow actors, friends & even perfect strangers. When I was a kid I just loved Burt Reynolds so much. He was cool, funny and had a swagger that just made me laugh at almost every scene. He could project his mind so you knew what he was thinking without barely saying a word. He was so talented and always went for subtle comic cues that were so natural to him any other actor could find this quite challenging if you were not another seriously talented top line actor. I always insisted we watched anything he was in and when VHS shops suddenly sprung up out of nowhere around every corner shop on every street I would beg my mom to hire 2-3 movies per week until I saw everything he was in even though my mom just thought he was the vulgar, yanky, bigheaded show off. She never got what he was about and missed the whole point of his way of doing things. I came across this show from Joe Rogan mentioning him on Letterman but now I will spend the rest of this week in quarantine watching all his movies I guess.

He got hit in the jaw with a steel chair making "City Heat" when the stunt guy grabbed the wrong chair. This started the terrible pain and health problems Burt Reynolds struggled with for years and the horrible rumors that he had aids. He's obviously a little off here and probably in pain. Never fully recovered. Love the guy - a great entertainer and actor.

Yeah, and what a complete gentleman he was for not even breathing a word about it here; even saying that he had a lot of fun making this picture. No, he didn't. It got critically panned, it did poorly in theaters, and it caused him major health problems as well as a steady decline in his career before his first comeback with the caper comedy *BREAKING IN* in 1989, and his hit TV show "Evening Shade" from 1990 - 94. R.I.P. Burt. We loved ya.

Burt was one in a million. I can literally watch almost any movie he's done simply because he is in it. He has a magnetic charisma, a charm and a badass quality when needed. Dude was awesome. I'd pick Heat, Malone and Sharky's Machine as my favorite Burt films and two of those weren't hits.
