Absolutely priceless. Man, I miss Johnny Carson......the best host ever.

When I was 10 yrs old (1962), through the Boy's Club, I was selected to appear on Johnny's TV show "Who Do You Trust" as the bubblegum bubble blowing champion. 3 things happened I will never forget - I blew a humongous bubble that burst in my face, Johnny gave me the answe(off camera) to his quiz question & I received a check for $75. about a week later. Now at 67, it's still a heartwarming & treasured chapter in my life. Johnny was one of the special ones !

One of the last things Johnny ever said on David Letterman's show via the phone from his Malibu home was when California was having forest fires, (paraphrasing) "The weather is really nice out here today, the mud slides are putting out the forest fires." With that David put the phone down and laughed like crazy. Johnny hadn't been on the air for nearly two years but hadn't missed a beat in his comedic timing. Rest In Peace, Johnny, and thanks for all those laughs. 😄 🕯

And very quietly Eddie Van Halen is sitting in with the band...but we don't know that because of Johnny frickin' Carson....Legend!!

After 30 plus years as the Tonight Show host, he left an indelible image and sound for everyone who grew up watching him over the decades.

You might be amazed at what you see, hear and know at this current time in your life, as you watch your favorite old shows and films so many years later. I watched the movie "Jaws" when it first came out in 1975 and I bought it on VHS video cassette. I became addicted to it, not for the horror and suspense, but for the story about the three men who set sail in order to find and kill the monster shark and save their town. Eventually, I tired of the movie, but I would play it every couple of years. Immediately, I saw things, people, and elements in the movie that I didn't even recognize in 1975. I continued to watch it every few years, and each time I would recognize and understand even more new things about the movie that I had no awareness of in the past viewings. Elements of directing, lighting, sound, the story line, the relationship between characters, emotions, and other subtle things, that as a much younger person, I had no interest in because I had no awareness of them in my youth or past decades. Watching recordings of your favorite old TV shows and movies of your youth, or of past years will not only allow you to linger in the memory of that simpler time, but it will also enlighten you about who you are now, and what you know now, that you didn't know in younger days. It's a wonderful way of revisiting your youth, while becoming acquainted with yourself in present day. Truly a kind of mirror into the past as well as the present. Believe me, you will really enjoy this, and as years go on, you can continue to revisit your past through the decades and realize who you are now, through watching these recordings.

There will never be another Johnny, comic genius. His jokes are still funny from the first Tonight Show till his last apperance. Loved everything Johnny said and did. His mold was broken. RIP the greatest!!!

I really, really miss that man. What a legend. There will never be another as great as Carson. It is truly amazing the power he had in Hollywood, at one point The Tonight Show made 11% of the profits at NBC.

@Yip yap what's more, Johnny was trying to pull a sort of double whammy on Dave. There was $50 that Johnny owed him from a wager he'd lost about 4 years previously. Dave was trying to sue Carson's estate for restitution for awhile, I think they finally just wound up settling out of court.

I feel lucky to be old enough to have grown up with Carson but young enough to appreciate Letterman--my college dorm mates would gather in the TV room to watch Letterman every night. Their relationship was unique too--Carson rarely appeared on other interview shows, but he did Letterman's show several times, even after he retired and Letterman left NBC for his own 11:30 show on CBS --the best thing that could've happened for Letterman, IMO. Now, looking back, it's hard to imagine that it mattered who took Johnny's spot bc the truth is, NOBODY could take Johnny's spot and David was smart enough and funny enough to create his own memorable space on late night television. Btw, love the little wink Johnny gives Dave just before he leaves.

@@andybaldman Maybe, but not so sure. Johnny was number 1 and so huge that by the eighties, other networks gave up even trying to compete. They didn't bother until Johnny retired. Only then did a whole bunch show up for a time. Some good, some not. Arsenio Hall was good. Pat Sajak not so much. There were others as well. Most did not last long. Nobody since Johnny did what he did...#1 for more than twenty straight years.

Johnny Carson, David Letterman and Eddie all wrapped into one show. 1985 was a great year!

When people genuinely had fun with each other!😊 Johnny had a great laugh.

Wonderful segment, and how cute that they were both visibly nervous, and yet both funny as ever. I could not stop smiling while watching this clip.

I will always love Johnny Carson . So many great memories with my family growing up.

I couldn't waitt to learn English so I can understand Johnny so I did in short 9 months. What a great privilege to enjoy johny as my second adopted language. Thanks to Johnny for all those laughter years.

That man on the left is second to none. The King…he was and shall forever remain the legend that all others should aspire to. His appearance on Letterman says everything about the level of esteem that Carson had for Letterman . Two legends. The best and the one who should have gotten his time slot. And Mrs OHara said oh my poor husband he never had a chance. And the guy says I don't know about that. He got out three times to go to the bathroom.

To me, mobile phones are the worst invention ever, after plastics. They made already pretty fast pace of our society even faster. Nowadays you must be permanently available for others otherwise they get mad at you or are scared to death because something terrible must have happened to you.

Just looked up some background. Johnny joined the Navy June 1943 and after training went into active duty right at the end of WWII. He had the sobering task of removing the remains of 20 men killed on his ship after a torpedo attack. Those kind of experiences can keep you humble.

@@hutch1197 Actually David didn't know according to Peter Lassally, associate producer on Carson's show and later worked for Dave at CBS. He said this bit was planned by Johnny and the Late Night production team, but they never told Dave.

Two legends of television enjoying and respecting one another in a rare appearance together.

This is one of my all time favorite episodes of Letterman. I used to have this on a VHS tape way back in the 80's, with a couple of other favorites. I wish I could remember all the bits, but I definitely remember that Eddie sat in with the band. I just remember that it was a hysterical episode, top to bottom. Thanks, Don!

I was around 10th grade around this year and i had my first little 2nd hand tv where i could watch whatever i wanted and i discovered Letterman show and thought it was the most hilarious stuff. He always did absurd skits that no one else but the classic SNL crew did, and always had interesting things going on with "on the street" bits and dropping things off 10 story bldg. and the music guests were great and was just super funny program for years and i still have a lot of nostalgia for it as nothing Ive ever seen since has ever matched it in its prime as it just had so many aspects to it that were unexpected and unique.

Johnny was David’s #1 fan. Great memories.

That phone call to daves mom is a niche joke but for me it seems so timeless, just a hilarious and you can see how much fun of a gag it was.

Oh my goodness! What a priceless moment! I sure do miss these two!

They were the best of times for anyone who remembers them.

Always great to see the Carson Letterman together. This is real TV and genuine. And of course Paul Schaffer and his band , Great Original Sound music. They will live in fond memories forever , I promise you !

Thank you for the post. I've never seen this before. Thanks KZread! I've never seen Johnny give an interview before & Dave was only in his 3rd year, he was clearly uncomfortable & intimidated. It's really cool to see how much Johnny enjoyed to laugh & how well Dave carried himself, even when he felt intimidated. Understandable Dave, it's Johnny Carson. Thanks again!

I'm not 100% sure, But I think this was the same show that his wife, Valerie Bertoneli, was also a guest.

Carson is shy & an introvert, so this is so special Thx. He prefers to be a host, thank a guest.

I miss these two guys very much. Johnny and Dave were the best late night talk show hosts ever.

As a kid I would sneak down the stairs to watch Carson do his monologue then use the jokes the next day in elementary school. I would get in trouble but the teachers would laugh when they wrote the jokes down for the principal. I also loved Conan and wish he could have stayed the host of the tonight show. Leno and Fallon are the worst.

@@pditties Fallon is ok, but he doesn’t slow it down to get deeper into the guests shtick and let his guests shine enough like Johnny always did.. a gentleman with the ladies and a guys guy with men and a class act with anyone who is creatively intelligent.. even including wild animals who are funny and with unique character. He was able to incorporate wisdom, common sense, intelligence and basic psychology. Those are good American values which I miss from Johnny.
