It's also used interchangeably for graveyards and graves, so I've heard. In this case it could mean any or perhaps all of these definitions. Although I've heard Tuonela as an afterlife is much less terrifying than what's shown here, merely being a quiet place where the dead sleep peacefully for eternity, and it's the only place the dead go, whether they were good or evil in life. It reminds me of one of the first ideas of an afterlife from certain neolithic peoples, where there was one singular afterlife that all the dead shared. I wonder if they're at all related, given that Lithuania, a nearby neighbor of Finland and Estonia, is said to have changed little demographically and linguistically since the time of the proto-indo-europeans.

So it's a allegorical story about a man coming to term with his crime. The ghost woman = his victim obviously. The way she suddenly pops up out of the shadow in her first chase was him tying to justified the sudden, inescapable situation, that it wasn't entirely his fault. The man and his demon car = Him and his car, with the car turned monstrous as it was really his tool for the manslaughter. The ghost cyclists = his view on cyclists in general. The way the game deliberately makes them annoying, often swerving in front of his bike is again, trying to justifiy his own action and victim blaming, that they often gets in the way and endanger everyone. The Skull God = Death itself. The fact the accident did indeed claimed the lives of the woman and not him mirrors the the way it snatch the ghost away and let him leave.

I dont know if that was the creators intent but still a cool theory
@Buitronthecrazy
2 жыл бұрын
>crime But it was clearly an accident.
My theory on this: Before we proceed, the story is centered around finnish mythology. The man committed manslaughter; killed the woman recklessly, without it being his intent. In Finnish mythology, if there was nobody to envisage the actual moment of death, the soul of the deceased was bound to roam about restlessly and haunting could be expected, too. Also in Finnish mythology, the soul of the person disconnects from the body through violence or harm, therefore the soul of the man was released from his body (due to him being harmed by the accident), so he isn't necessarily dead but simply disconnected from his body, allowing the woman to take revenge (since both of their souls were released in the process). The woman was luring the man's soul into Tuonela(Tuonela is the realm of the dead or the Underworld in Finnish mythology), torturing him in the process. When the player finally reached Tuonela, it seemed as if the woman gained total control, which justifies the reason she was luring him to that place. The woman then attempted to proceed with her torture until death said "enough" as she surpassed her limits by bringing a living person's soul into Tuonela to carry on with her torture. The soul was then released thanks to death and was able to escape back to the overworld into his own body, thus waking up. (btw when death said "you do not belong here" it's because the living isn't allowed in Tuonela. Shamans (living humans) were able to enter Tuonela by falling into a trance and tricking the guards)

This is a great example of how to convey a story almost entirely through gameplay, cool game. Also, I honestly would love a whole game just centered on PS1-style night biking, the ambience before things get spooky is so nice
@aaronamerican5187
2 жыл бұрын
I have a similar idea, but instead of night biking, your night jogging. This is based off my own experience when I used to jog during the night. Usually I try to just focus on keeping my breath steady and endure for 3 miles. However, there were some instances that I couldn't help but think that someone could be watching me in the dark, filling me with a sense a fear, uncertainty, and dread, even though I knew the neighborhood I live in is a safe one. And I also thought hey, this sounds like a good idea for a survival horror game. And instead of spirits and demons though, your being stalked by a masked murderer. You would have to rely on your both sight, headlight, and ears to determine if the killer is pursuing you, near, and is planning the strike. He wouldn't running after behind per say, but more like hiding where its dark, like the darkness between houses, or in the tall grasses of an undeveloped area, tall trees, basically anywhere that neither street lamps or outdoor house lights shine. You could avoid being intercepted and killed by sprinting, or taking a different direction. But at the same time, you also got to take your stamina and breath into consideration, as if you sprint too much, you'll lose your breath, stamina, which will cause you to slow down, which might leave you vulnerable. Perhaps difficulty could be determined by the amount of miles you run, and the location. The more miles you run, the more your breath and stamina you need to save, and more sparingly you need to use your sprints. Locations could include a (mostly) safe neighborhood, a park, or a forest trail where there are mostly no lights. That's the basics of what I had in mind. While I don't know how to make an actual game myself, it would be cool to see the idea come to fruition.

SPOILERS: The girl was riding a bike, as is evidenced by both the knocked over bicycle with blood, & the part where the car chases you.
Slight spoilers, but from 10:20 onward during the car chase...Does the horror music kinda sound like someone distorted the Tim Allen AEUHHH grunt to anyone else?

Tim the tool man Taylor here and I’m fucking pissed.
Man what an incredible story this is really something else
Dang, impressive work from Donitz. I don’t think i would’ve been able to play this by myself; it effectively creeped me out.
This was creepier than expected but I laughed when she rode past backwards on the bike 😄
Clever and unexpected scenario.
Interesting game. Before that last scene I was thinking he had been hit by the car and the demonic spirit chasing him was a reaper trying to collect his soul. After, I'd guess it was the spirit of the girl telling him he's going to hell for killing her.
I like this. It does not rely to heavily on one sort of mechanic or repetition. The changing of things keeps the interest but not only that, the lack of any real dialog lets the player interpret the story in their head rather than laying it out. This feels like Twin Peaks of walking horror simulators.
14:54 this was so funny =))))) The panic and crashing into a road block
Every dream means something. My dreams:
I also like that the ending is open for interpretation.
This was spooky as all hell to watch, and seeing a narrative come out by just playing on was impressive
Man even with the horrible shit going on this video was very ASMR with the beautiful night scenery, the steady treading of the bike tires and that cute ding ding.
Mannnn if you don’t quit looking behind you and ride that damn bike lmfao
ps1 style games really gave you creepy vibes
that part where he gets eaten by the weirdly rendered car made me giggle
me: riding bike, strange thing: follow me,me: look back
Reminiscent of the movie “The Machinist” Suppression and repression both voluntarily and involuntary inevitably lead to a psychotic break. Breakdown or breakthrough? Up to you.
Moral of the story, always watch the road.
Ngl, the vibration & the loud thumping at 14:41 scared the shit out of me
0:30 that intro is so damn gorgeous to listen to, makes me want to whip out my guitar and join in
Sick visuals, the fleshy car was my favorite!

I liked the giant ghost
That ending!!
I can sense your shock man, that sudden movement of camera is a proof!
If you grew up in a small town, you'll never understand how frightening these dark roads are to someone who didn't
