A key part of the story that really sticks out to me: He murders a bug for it’s crown, fits it on his finger and later chopped his own finger off thinking it’s another creature with a crown. Blinded by greed, he killed himself because of it.

For a guy that stole lots of crowns, he only ever managed to have a max of 3 at any given time

Austin Dial They are meant to represent what he would be like without his crown, just another cave dweller like the rest of us, also they serve to add to his paranoia by there always being something watching him waiting to take his crown. He threw himself into the void cause he didn’t care about the afterlife or making amends with the other kings he wronged he only cared about the crown and he had it so why stay in a place where someone might take it. It will be just him and his crown now.

Ngl the kings hands are MASSIVE. Idk why but I love that feature.

i'm genuinely convinced at least half the dislikes are people bitter & jealous over the massive success of these animations smooth animation, lovely art style, wonderful key poses, very expressive. Overtly comical with a solid moral lesson, done with no words; it needs no translation. The two years of work it took are on full display every frame, it is a masterpiece. Is it Alright that i find the bug king's death kinda satisfying?

What I really like has been the music, esoecially when we see the Mountain King. Such a bombastic piece.

The royal religious precession tune gave me crazy goose bumps. Such incredible sound design and music you’ve produced for this. Every single aspect of this piece is an awe inspiring masterpiece.. truly beautiful to behold.

I love the fact that he spent a lifetime stealing crowns, eventually got over the fact that maybe he can't have every single crown he sees, only to lose his shit when his little paper crown got taken away.

I noticed how everyone at the feast of the dead did not have a crown, except for death. And then Death gave the crown away so he could keep having a party. I bet the crown for him didn't really matter to hi. as much as it did for the double king

I'm just now discovering some of the works of Richard Williams, and I'm seeing a ton of the influence that this animation must have drawn from him. Incredible stuff

This is one of the greats, a iconic animation that will live on for years to come

I kind of find that little mushroom guard awfully cute certainly when it squeaks "Halt".

I love how with the crown at 6:04 he throws it away to then pay attention to the cockatoo whose feathers look more like what he is used to. He didn't realize how something unfamiliar could be valuable.

@@nick10519 I think this crown could also be a king's though (look at the previous owners of the St Edward's crown for example) It's probably just because he was unfamiliar with it and/or because he didn't know how to stack it on his head

I think it’s because there wasn’t any challenge, he just picked it up without a fight and was kinda like “oh…that’s it?”

One detail which I liked was from the start where the mouse guard acts surprised by the king when he realizes why he is here and drops his weapon. In the next scene he is getting ready to shoot but it was too late. Just noticed that now

The names of the Kings/Queens are “The (Double) King” Ratking Agustus the agreeable, Queen Daisy VII, Stratomonarchus, Lady Gertrude of Squash, Lord of the Flies, Harg the Serpent Queen, King Ronald the moist, King Aldo and Queen Aldine of the Glade, Olov the Mountain King, Durt the Elder, a cockatoo (not royal,) and Agatha, Matriarch of Death.

I love that the pumpkin is the only one whose form on the king's hall is uninjured. The rat, snake, and fly all still have their injuries and the fish is constantly gasping

In the dead king's hall (roughly at 7:45), the pumpkin king isn't smashed, but the other kings aren't regenerated. The rat king's skull hasn't been replaced and his eyes are still loose, the snake king's still got the sword holes in his head, and like tophat said, the fish king is having trouble breathing. and the fly is still decapitated.

@thesusbus the pumpkin was smashed, but he's back in one piece. No one else gets that luxury, they all have to deal with the injuries the double king inflicted on them.

@thesusbus the only king in the underworld that hasnt kept their injuries. The pumpkin king died cause he got smahed but in the underworld hes fine but like the fly queen had their head cut off but in the underworld they still have their head cut off

I like how our main character doesn’t even act like a king in any way. He just locks himself in a tower away from everyone and anything. The only thing he does really is steal crowns as if he associates being a king with being happy and as it doesn’t really work out that way; he delves further into insanity and desperation.

Hmmmm, my childhood was wildly crazy huh? I can’t believe I was watching this as a child, and what surprised me is that this is still good as before.
