Building the Ultimate Overlanding, Rock Crawler. Chevy S10 solid axle Rock lander!! Part 1
Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары
This video is 2 months in the making. I have decided I am going to build a "budget" version of @DirtLifestyle Toyota Tacoma. Introducing project Rock Lander!! Over the next few months I will be taking this stock 2001 Chevrolet S10, doing a straight axle swap, big axles, lockers, 40 inch tires, bed rack, rooftop tent, custom bumpers, rock sliders, and the list goes on! You don't want to miss this build. Today we go over how I chose this truck, the cost of doing a DIY project like this and we start tearing into it!

My heart broke when i saw you strip down the old TJ. i spent the past 5 years following your build and doing the same to my rig....it is like seeing your mentor go down...I get it, but dang, it is the end of an era.

A 5cyl 1st gen Chevy Colorado would be a solid choice IMO. And a better frame to build off of than any of the other options.

I had a few early 90s Nissan Pathfinders... they are Awesome.
What I did with my first gen Tacoma 4 cylinder is 4 leaf springs, 2 solid axles , and FTW! Ain’t “ Overlanding “ I like to shower and off-road, so no tents , no complications, simple, done and it works! Glad to see a S10 being built, always loved these trucks
Yes yes yes!!!! Over the next 10 years these S-10 4x4 models are going to skyrocket in value. Unfortunately many were destroyed, crushed and sent to China during the Obama/Biden “cash for clunkers” program, so it’s getting harder finding a nice ZR2 or ZR5 and prices will rise significantly in the coming years. The S-10 Blazers and Pickups are developing quite a cult following. Excited for this project!
I always loved the interiors of the late ‘90s and early ‘00s models ❤
I built a 2001 Sonoma on 37s with a 44/9 inch. 65wms and 3.5bs rims to clear nicely. The stock S10 rear springs work great. Remove the short lower springs and build a bastard pack with XJ upper leafs. You’ll need an Astro Van steering box as well. I used 8inch Clayton Offroad front XJ coil springs in the front. Can’t wait to see the build.

Question though. Sense you’re pulling the axles why not use your rear coilovers off the tj and put them on the front and get different spring rates
@MuddyBeards4X4

These coilovers are tuned by Accutune specifically for the rear of the TJ, it would need to be re valved and new springs. I plan on putting them back on the rear of the TJ where they belong.
@adamament1675

If you plan on putting the coilovers back on the tj it makes sense not to mess with them. Just figured it’d be easier to package and possibly cheaper to have them redone for the s10

I definitely thought about it. Throwing the coilovers in the front was my first thought as well.
So glad to hear the TJ is staying! I refused to "like" this video until I confirmed that. 😂 Project is looking super cool, MUCH better second wheeler idea than that Montero IMHO (course I've always been partial to that era S10's as well as the old square bodies)

Swing your side doors down. That way you can use as a shelf for the stuff inside.
The mention of the TJ not being a buggy, still having the factory frame followed by you only taking the axles and t-case makes its seem like some tube, an atlas, and 1 ton axles may be in its future....

Froehlich suspension.Think thats the correct spelling since its kind of a weird name.
I think the S10 platform is terribly overlooked by the off road community. The size is just right for even the tightest trails. The 4.3 is a great engine that is a little lacking on power for an axle swapped build, but with a simple tune, it does great. The 4L60E needs to be kept cool but is plenty strong for 99.375% of what you need it to do.
Currently building a 4dr s10. Im swaping to a zr2 frame and running 33x12.5 tires. Nv3500 w/ np231 t-case swap out of a 95 s10. Cast iron front diff, modifyed the front diff to always be engaged. Currently tearing down for paint and sound proofing. Looking forward to this build

Too bad you missed out on the secknd gen Frontier. Long travel kit can be had with Nissan Titan suspension, and the V8 from a Titan can drop in as they use the same frames. We bought ours for 6500 CDN 3 years ago so they are within the price range too.
Ditch the stock fuel tank it’s going to be a major pita for your link build out back. I already have this truck same truck built and I would recomend swapping to a 96+ 2door s10 blazer tank and putting it behind the axle , or for me iam running a 98 suburban tank 42 gallon behind the axle in my crew cab s10 and I love the range it gives me.
@MuddyBeards4X4

The rear crossmember on this truck being a 4 door, there isn’t room back there for a tank, unless I did a fuel cell or something, it would be hanging past the end of the frame.

Well I will say I have a 2001 crew cab s10 and I did have mine set up with dual tanks ( stock one and 2 door blazer tank under the bed where the stock spare tire was ) now I have the single 42 gallon suburban tank under the bed , being able to go triangulate at four link out back is 100% worth the effort of moving the tank . Check your email I sent you a few pics of my truck

Good chance it won't be long until the main seal goes. Also the engine plus transmission will need to be replaced soon. I went through all this with my s10 before I sold it. Buying cars like this are money pits. It's 5k for the engine ,4k for the transmission and a minimum of 3k for each to get installed. So your getting a very old s10 for about 30k.
If I could offer one piece of advice it would be put in additional cross members anywhere you can. I’ve had mine built for a few years now. It’s slow, but a solid truck overall. I still need to figure out a cage and add more crossmembers. Not having either has really taken a toll on the body. Good luck with your build!

The great thing about GM trucks is that you can do whatever you want and odds are someone's already done the legwork. There are V8 swap kits for 4x4 S-10s, just sayin'.
I has 04 crewcab s10 zr5. Your gonna want to get a astro van steering box. For SAS The 4l60E is decent but your gonna wanna do the basic upgrades to make it very reliable for wheeling. Basically turn it into a 4l65E. Zpak 3-4 clutch pack. A new drum for a wider 2-4 band. And corvette 2-4 servos for more 2-4 band holding strength. Get your self HP tuners. Then you can make adjustments for tire size, gearing ratio changes, you can make adjustments to the transmission shift points, you can adjust and tune the engine parameters. @@MuddyBeards4X4 around here, if you find one with more then 150,000 miles on it they either have a new motor already or something in the description suggests motor issues… same as jeeps.

Now I know you are smokin crack! Tearin that Jeep down for that reason has got to be a sin :(
Unfortunate to see another good Jeep channel sacrificed to chase overlander clicks.

Still 3 Jeeps on the channel, not going away. And this will not be an “overlander” in the way you are thinking. Not many overlanders on straight axles and 40’s.
Just sub to you’re channel I’m building a 2006 Chevy 1500 1ton swap next is going to be an s10 for my son I’m already looking into finding one

Stock motor but the transmission is built, upgraded internals and shift kit. I will not be doing an LS swap in this. I have a engine/transmission swap plan but it will be a while. Hp D44 is 1976 f150 and 9” is 1980 f150.
