Building a Cowboy Hat
Үй жануарлары мен аңдар
I have always been intrigued by the process of making cowboy hats. So I lined it up with my good friend/hat maker Sampson Moss of Prairie Wind Hatworks. He shows us everything from Lighting the hats on fire to building the perfect fit. It was very fun to watch the process hope you enjoy!

There is a lot that goes into making a custom hat! It is truly an art... beautifully done!
I recall back in the 1960s on Monday nights was Scouts. I ironed my shirt. scarf and lastly was my Stetson. Now at 70 it's just too over loosing it expensive to own a Stetson. My last Stetson is at the bottom of OKANAGAN LAKE B.C. I hope something enjoys it; I'm still pissed after loosing it long ago. THANKS. Alberta Canada
Massively well done. Proof that you don’t have to have a 1900s conformitor or formillion. Just quality felt, know how, and patience.
Amazing skill and quality. Thank you for sharing this video.
How do you even get the shape to start with? Just a normal sheet of felt? Block it and then cut a circle? Also what style hat is that, that you're wearing?
I just love handcrafting! Thanks for sharing 😊
Beautiful work
He makes some SMOKING hats.
Made in Canada and World class!!
That isa fantastic looking cowboy hat! Great colors!
Absolutely beautiful video, so inspired.
Great video! It reminds me that I have to get mine cleaned👍
Thank you, very fascinating! I like he tells some tips and explains what he does and why, it really helps!!!
6:25 That light the hat was amazing
Thank you that was very interesting. God bless you and your family.
I enjoyed watching this, thank you
What a wonderful skill to keep. I wish you the best on your dream for being #1 Canadian hat designer. I will be following you. My Father and Grandparents were very happy hat wearing people. We would take a trip to go and get their hats.
This was very interesting. One thing I love about youtube is I learn about random things and today it was hat making. I'm a big fan of wool felt, it's cool to learn about other fibers used for felt. Much love ❤️
Hello from Texas, I do my own hat cleaning and shaping myself, you do great work by the way. I will try the flame technique on my hats and see how it works.
Very very cool!
Very cool, thank you
great job
Beautiful
From a Texas rancher nice hats amigo
I struggle to understand why so many people want a cattleman's style hat. So many interesting styles to be had.
I really like the hat he’s wearing, it looks the the cowboy painter Charlie Russell’s hat
I wear a hat almost every day, I want one of these
Love it!
I saw fire. I come to video. I press like.
What grit do you use to sand the hats? This is amazing and I had no idea you sanded professional hats
Great work, you have wonderful skills , can you tell me where to buy the hat supplies, blocks, flanges etc!
Pretty much all custom hatters use the same Winchester hat bodies. I have yet to be impressed with their quality. You have to do more than just block the hat. Most hatters iron the crown and brim on the block/flange. I think it takes more than that though. Ive experimented with baking a damp hat in the oven on the block at low temps until dry and I've seen remarkable felt stability doing this. If I made hats for a business I'd look further into this for sure. If you simply block a raw body, it'll shrink and taper quickly after wet weather.
I love cowboy hats and always reshape them after I purchase them. Broken in sombreros are the best.
I like it
Wow so amazing, Where did you get the hat blocks from that say RA? very cool shop

I’m going to need to stop by here and get myself a working hat.
Great explanation on how it’s done. But where do you get beaver/rabbit hat blanks to even start the process?

That was exactly what I was going to ask. Does he make his own felt and how or buy blanks of some sort? What are the blanks called and where do they come from
Hey, really love your work! :) can I ask which paper grids you are using for sanding ?

Felt this
What do you use on a old cowboy hat to clean it!!
What are you spraying on your hat before you set fire to it?
do you buy the hats already formed with the bump?
What type/thickness of felt are you using?
I have a felt Tiller by Brixton. It is super soft i want it stff stiff stiff (dats wut she said) how do I do dat? Do you use chemical stiffener? Starch? Steam? Enquiring minds want to know!
What style of block is that? I’m trying to get an idea on what style is mostly used in western hats. Like 51,52?
Wow. New to hats. Where do you get felt?

Do you want his contact info?
Your Link only takes me to Facebook, not your specific Facebook page(?) - can’t find it.
quindi se ho capito bene , lui usa modellare il capello con semplice vapore , e acqua giusto ? ( non capisco molto bene l' inglese per questo chiedo 😅 )
How come my hat looks so dirty and oily ? I sprayed red diesel on it before I lit it on fire I kinda smoldered awhile and put off lots of smoke . Now it’s filthy and stinks terrible.
