Work of Art Vintage Silhouettes' Fedora (Art Fawcett - VS Custom Hats)

Ойын-сауық

I didn't start out with the intention of making a documentary 😉 But, at just a hair over 30 minutes that is about what this amounts to!
This episode was a labor of love for me! It's something that I needed to complete and I hope you enjoy it. It not only documents the making of my Vintage Silhouettes Fedora but, it is also documenting the history of an amazing hatter, Art Fawcett. Never before has he allowed this kind of access to his work. I appreciate him trusting me with the task!
Enjoy.

Any advice on where I can get the proper tools to make hats? I wanna get into it with my sons as maybe a hobby/business. Do they offer apprenticeships? Thanks!

@@mentallifeconsultants5101 I make some of them. I made my own hat block, pullerdowner (the moon shaped thing to pull the hat down over the block), pencil curler, breaking tool (for pushing the string where the crown meets the brim), tolliker (for pushing the bottom of the crown into the formillion, I even made some replacement wedges for Art's antique formillion). Though I wasn't able to reproduce the his antique aluminum formillion for him. Most of these tools you can find online as various people make them, there's even a few people who make conformateur and formillion reproductions, the price is high, but good tools cost good money! good luck with your new hobby.

I just spent a half hour watching a guy make a hat. I couldn't let it go. The artistry of it all appealed to me as a professional artist myself. I own several fedoras, and a couple of derbies, (I won't even go into the cowboy hats here.) None so fine as this hat to be sure. Now I keep thinking of a sage green fedora I lusted for at the Optimo Hatworks in Bisbee AZ. I wanted it so bad, I'd have paid a chunk for it. Sadly it didn't fit and was one of a kind and not one that they made there. Still that place was my first class in good-hat school. This video was my second class. THANKS.

I must say this is the best soothing video, I have ever seen about the making of a hat. I didn’t know, so much detail went into the making of a hat. I have a new found respect for hat makers all over the USA. I must say there isn’t too many of these guys around, I hope this won’t be a lost art to other competitors like China. Just looking at so much machinery, wooden models of different shapes, steam machines, sewing machines, I mean this guy’s shop is huge, and so much dedication and labor intensive. I got to say, it takes a person with a talent such as this one to make such beautiful hats, ribbons, and all the details that go into the making of a hat. Not just anyone is as talented , and dedicated as this man is to be a lost art because dedication is a lost art. Next time, I buy a Stetson hat, I will look at it as an art of work and the dedication that was put into it. Great video, and sad he retired. He made great hats throughout his career, and hope, he passed on this art to someone else. 👍

Art is the master. My wife bought me a nice Panama from Equador for Father's Day about a decade ago. Unfortunately it went into a swimming pool soon after and turned into a soggy potato chip. I sent it to Art and he did his best to bring it back to life. I had him replace the plain black ribbon with a lovely forest green with a pewter accent in the bow. The hat isn't perfect but it has a ton of character and looks great with that ribbon. God bless Art Fawcett!

Great informative video Jed. It was really enjoyable to see how a master makes a custom hat. My only suggestion would be for you to put a body "clip mic" on your subject so Art could be heard. I’m not sure that this will work but I have three questions and you may be able to answer one and Art the others. Why was denatured alcohol used during sanding, what oil is used on the felt, and is there any benefit to another application of that oil to one of his 100% beaver hats that is 10 years old? I have several 100% beaver fedoras and while all are great hats, the VS hat is the one I’m most likely to wear as it just feels and wears so well and does so after lots of wear. Thanks for the video and much thanks to Mr. Fawcett for letting you into his lair.

I found a thread over on “The Fedora Lounge” bulletin board, Art may be more like to answer over there rather than here (I’m not sure if he has a KZread account). I will answer what I can here... As I understand it (and he mentions this in the video but you might have to bump the volume up) the denatured alcohol helps push the core down. Again, he explains it better in the video than I can... The oil Art is using is Coconut Oil, again he says this in the video but the equipment is running and it’s a little hard to hear. He also mentions that some folks use Vaseline... I don’t know if reapplying that oil would be beneficial but, I am watching that thread on the Fedora Lounge so if you ask him I will learn too! 🤠 I prefer the fit of my Art Fawcett made Fedoras over most of my other hats as well. I really think it has a lot to do with that conformer. Jessica, as I mention in the video, has two Art Fawcett fedoras. She is not a “hat person” (like I am) but can wear these fedoras all day because of the fit. She says she actually forgets she has them on! They are so comfortable. I hope that answers your questions.

Good question Karl. I’m not sure how a hatter accounts for the sweatband. I measure a 7 3/8 so I’d guess that the block takes into account the sweatband. Perhaps a hatter will jump on and explain it better for both of us. - Jed 🤠
