You should do a fiberglass skimboad next It might even be cheaper because of wood prices

I took a stab at that last year and used the wrong epoxy/foam combo so it failed and never made it onto the channel, but that's definitely something I want to tackle at some point

Baltic Birch isn't even available locally for me right now, and hasn't been for probably 6 months. Its pretty crazy. I'm glad I bought 3 full sheets last summer. Been slowly turning them into decks. As for all the discussion on a foamcore fiberglass skimboard... I wonder if there's room for any sort of hybridization that can take advantage of the buoyancy of foam without having to deal with glass and epoxy. I never have liked dealing with that stuff if I can ever avoid it. And even worse for basic DIY is the cost for buying in is usually really high since epoxy is sold in sizes with building/repairing boats in mind, not little boards.

  • @GoodRoads

The epoxy is definitely the expensive part, it blows my mind how much that stuff costs every time I do a build with it. A DIY glass board would be much cheaper than a professionally made glass board, but I think it would still be more expensive than a wood one

Would there be a downside if I’d use two layers of 5mm instead of 3 layers of 3mm? More effort needed to create the rocker?

I've made skimboards using 1/2" and 3/4" plywood, and used them behind a wakeboard winch and boat before. I haven't wake surfed them but towing behind the boat worked well.

Can’t wait for that router mount to be available as a physical product. Also I have been planning on a skimboard build and was thinking about just two plys of 1/8 birch. What are your thoughts on that?

  • @GoodRoads

It might be strong enough depending on your weight? Riding the one I built made me realize that the forces involved with a skimboard are very different than a skate deck so I can't say for sure

  • @GoodRoads

You will be able to get some curves with a single glue line, but they will relax some after you take it out of the mold. You can definitely still get something usable though

Soak it, I mean absolutely soak it, with warm water if possible, and then clamp the curves in place and leave it for days until it's dry. I made a skimboard this way when I was a kid and I was able to get some rocker into the board

They used to sell plywood skimboards at looks local surf shops in Florida for like 60 bucks in 90 me and a friend's dad built one from free scrap wood from a house builder. I ended up making them myself later and selling them for 20 bucks but I never advertised so the customer base was small

Seriously. Under normal circumstances this would be much cheaper than buying a factory made board but with lumber the way it is right now it's roughly the same. At least using the birch plywood. I hope wood prices drop back to normal soon!
