Bugatti Nostalgia: Historic Racing Monaco 1984

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Checking through his archives, Ivan came across a VHS recording of the 1984 historic Bugatti race held prior to the Grand Prix. It was a celebration of 60 years of the Bugatti Type 35 and organised by Uwe Hucke and the Automobile Club de Monaco. This video was commissioned by Ivan's customer and friend, David Heimann.
The commentary was done by the late Neville Hay and Martin Dean.
Sadly a fair few of those involved in the racing and making of this video are no longer with us.
As the historic racing is happening in Monaco this weekend, we thought it would be good to share some of this racing footage with our followers. It's not the entire video, just footage of the final practice and the very wet race.

The best episode of the Shed EVER! Ivan. Can't believe that was only 6 laps, so much going on. Tbh, nowadays they probably would have scratched all the support races for fear of compromising the F1 race. Whilst watching, I recalled that Mansell was leading and on the way to yet another "first win" when he spun going up the hill and I fell off the edge of my chair. Probably David was lucky Murry wasn't commentating on his race, as he put the kiss on Nigel in his, lol. I used to be a marshal and on the really wet days there was nothing you could do about oil on the circuit apart from hope the rain washed it away quickly. That video is a piece of history, espeially seeing you bending back the rod in the barrier.

I assume John Howell, who lived near me in East Sussex, was driving the H16 type 45/47. I used to see this car at Eric Neve's engineering works at Barcombe, when getting Eric to make one off parts for me. Eric said something like: "it never worked properly in period and it is probably never going to work properly now."

Great video Ivan. Thanks for sharing that and your memories. I remember some of those cars (particularly the Lord Raglan car and the Trebor car) racing at Prescott Hill Climb back in the early 1980's when I was a young new driver being thrilled by all that awesome vintage machinery. I seem to remember there being one Type 35 (I think) that ran with twin rear wheels (rather like the old Auto Union hill climb car) and of course that 4 wheel drive Bugatti. Happy days. Thanks again.

I loved every second of that video;...not least watching Alain de Sideways on top form! The four-wheel-drive car (sorry, but I've forgotten its Type number) could clearly have been even better if Ettore had listened more carefully to the forceful advice of Jean-Albert Grégoire. But, instead of adopting homo-kinetic drive-shaft joints, Le Patron stuck with single Hooke joints. "Ah, la, la!".
