When I started at LMB in Belgium, they had just finished a home grown Minerva. The original sleeve valve smoke generator engine was shot, so they built a Liberty V12 from parts left over from the first war. I wasn't cheap, but it was absolutely brutal. They made quite a few engines so there must be another being used as a door stop somewhere.

Suggest a lorry/bus gearbox in order to handle 200hp. I have a barn full of old aero engines - but none quite that early. The original Napier Lion - an excellent engine, came out in 1917, but was developed through to 1930..... Not easy to find, but the later ones were very pretty robust and reliable. They started at 450bhp, and ended-up at 600-1,350bhp The really ideal engine would be a Wolseley Viper V8 - a 200bhp, direct-drive version of the Hispano Suiza 8b geared-drive engine. However - none of these engines are easy to find - so you may be best advised to look again at the OX5.

Best of luck Dom, finding an inline, pre 1918 engine will be pretty tough, as most aero engines were either radial or rotary units and it wasn't until the BE2 fighter bomber that inlines became popular and we're made by Rolls Royce (very expensive) and the German equivalent, Daimler Benz (as rare as hens teeth due to the scrapping of WW1 German aircraft. Maybe, if you can find one, a very early Gypsy Major 6 cylinder inline engine may be your best bet. It was used extensively by the De Havilland Aircraft Co almost from their inception and delivered good reliable horsepower in all their variants. Only problem was that they were mounted inverted which would require some massive conversion work to turn it cylinders up! The torque from most aero engines means that you could get away with a two or three speed gearbox, possibly one out of a boat and it would come with a reverse gear for when you have to get out of the Armco after the rest brakes fail! 🤣🤣🤣

while much later and mid engined, the Stanton Crop Duster Special used an inverted 4 cylinder De Havilland engine from a Tiger Moth, some of the engine solutions may apply, this car is still running and was at Goodwood in 2009, but I think a six cylinder would work well visually with the Rochet's long wheelbase and to my ear Ranalah Rochet sounds more period than Ranalah Rocket kzread.info/dash/bejne/aWmas7RrodOYiNI.html

Congratulations Dom, looks like a great start. I’m sure you will figure out the engine, but might I suggest you talk to Jobie Carter about a truck transmission from the era you are looking at. They would likely be strong enough to take the torque of any aero engine you end up with, if you can find one light enough. He might have some good ideas what to look for and maybe some contacts to talk to. Cheers from Canada. Tim

And I get the replica thing, it's like your 356; for tens (or hundreds) of thousands less you could be driving something that 99% of people wouldn't know was any different from the Stuttgart original...but you would.

I agree fully with your purchase decision Dom; firstly you got the intro and the thumbs up from fellow knowledgeable enthusiasts on Edwardians, and secondly you fell in love with the looks of the (potential) beast and this is SO important as a future driving force. So in a nutshell, you did correctly in securing this rolling chassis and don't eat yourself up about the decision, you will get used to it very, very shortly and start smiling to yourself about it! Sometimes you just HAVE to snap these things up whilst they are on offer. Now you only need a straight eight or a V12 to go in it, but will one fit length wise?? !!

What you need now is a Liberty L12 aero engine. These date from the Great War, and were designed and built in the US. Being only 27 litres, and fairly light and compact, I think that it would fit the bill. A land speed record car, called the White Triplex, was constructed around 100 years ago, with THREE of these engines!

The Liberty V12s are the playthings of people who heat their Boathouses with soiled ten pound notes to keep their Mahogany Dual Cockpit Runabouts warm in the winter. Perhaps he could sell his house, all his tools, cars, and motorbikes, plus rent out some of his clothes on days where he isn't wearing them to get his hands on a good Liberty and some spares. The good ones of those things are eye-wateringly, BRUTALLY expensive these days, which is a shame, because it would be A FANTASTIC choice
