You could go to your local tractor supply or rural king and buy a gallon of tractor enamel and spray it out of a gun. It would've been cheaper and looked a lot better. We've painted our circle track cars with it for 20 years

I 100% agree. Rattle cans are a waste of time and money and the finish sucks. Spend a little money on an acrylic enamel or urethane paint with UV protection that rattle can paint don’t provide. They fade and get chalky rather quickly.
@hunterton4310

That would require buying a gun and a air compressor and that’s out of the budget. I think he was really going for keeping it $115.

When using rattle cans:: When you are done, but still have plenty of paint in the can, turn the can upside down and spray until no paint comes out. This cleans the rattle cans tip.
@Beandiptheredneck
Жыл бұрын
These cans don't work like that, they still spray upside down. There's no way to clean it out unfortunately
As a body man you had me crying when you broke out the grinder for a decal 😆 best thing to use is a round rubber eraser that goes on a drill or a die grinder, it will take any decal off and not bother the paint

My Father when I was young had a black lab named Dixie. Great retriever, maybe one of the best he had.
so much better than using "Shine Juice" on the rust.. I hate the "Patina" look. nice job
It does look a lot better. A helpful suggestion is to make sure the paint is warm as well as the metal. Cold paint and warm metal will give this same result.

Temperature and prep is the key. If you're concerned about tapelunes, in the future, roll the tape where the two-tone is going to be. This will give a much lighter tape line than straight masking. My opinion, when your weather is warmer, do the bodywork on the '58 and do the blue and white two-tone paint job on it. Take off trim where you can, and tapenthe mounting screws in their respective holes. Tape is cheap, and the screws will be in the proper place so as not to accidentally run too long a screw into a spot. (Yes, I did that once when I was 11. Still remember that 41 years later)
Puppy steals the show. Great paint job.
To anyone that wants to do painting, the prepwork should take-4-5 times longer then the actual painting. Prep work really makes it come out its best.

Yep all in the prepwork🤯 This why I like patina and ratrods. That and you don't cry like a sissy when your new paint gets the first scratch especially on a pickup or 4x4 that by their nature will get scratched.😜

I remember last year, I wanted to fix up the headlights on my SAAB, the masking and sanding took almost two hours, the varnish going on, 10 minutes.... I was pretty ticked about it, but at least they don't look like crap anymore :))
It's a nice coincidence, but I bought a 87 Diplomat, former Springfield, Illinois city police car, mine was all white, blue interior. It took about 7 months to get all the parts it needed, but it's up and running now. I stuck with the original 318, eliminated the lean burn, very low miles for a former police car, it's at 126000 miles, and it is very reliable. I drive it often.
I love how much progress you have made on this car. keep it up champ!

Lol no way, I just found your channel today lunar and watched when you spray painted that car an hour ago😄 crazy the timing of thing in life sometimes. Me my self am trying to fight the urge to just spray paint my project car..I know I definitely shouldn't, I've been getting together supplies, air sanders, couple paint guns, hoses, dryers, regulators, a 2 stage 60 gal compressor, and a pop up gazebo I plan on turning into a paint booth to put in the corner of my shop. It's all about time, patience and alot of work I guess. In the mean time I'll try to resist spray painting my car..
This was excellent. I learned on spray cans. Been doing it for more than 50 plus years. I do own all the proper equipment. For smaller projects you can't beat, spray cans. My biggest gripe with the rattle can has been the size of the spray pattern. So thanks for finding this rustoleum product. I got a can of clear coming, can't wait to try it. You are totally correct, the prep and application are critical. When i saw you doing the hood, i shuddered, i knew that was a do over. Have done the same thing. A body man I am not, just very critical of my finishes. Thanks again. That was a very good finish, wet sanding and buffing are really make that look great.
Great idea, using your lift as a "paint booth".
The wrinkling can also be due to a reaction with the paint underneath. Recommend priming first. Then panel wipe and ensure the paint can is warmed at least up before you paint.
I am happy to see the progress on that old beauty.

Man Dylan that surprised the heck out of me, for a rattle can job it's really nice, thanks for the tip my Mopar buddy 👍👍👍👍👍✅✅✅✅✅
Looks pretty good for a rattle can job. Can't beat the price...🤘
Should have went over the body work with 1000 grit sandpaper to ensure a flat finish multiple times of painting and sanding will ensure a flat finish
Tip for spraypaint warm to cans in hot water the paint will lay out much smoother
Big Relief seeing you back after 2 weeks, Dylan.... I was concerned a crazed Chevy fan might've kidnapped you.. Us Tennessee people gotta lookout for one another ;) The ole' Dip is looking great! Hey Dylan: For a spray paint job, you did an exceptional job painting the car and the finished product shows in the quality of the car... Keep up the good work.... From the home PB Blaster Silicone spray... Cleveland, Ohio........
Looks as good or better then many Macco paint jobs I’ve seen! Great job you did there!
The cop car looks brand new again keep up the good work dylan
This car came out awesome looking. Now that's how u paint a car on the cheap. Love these old police cars, I owned a Michigan State Trooper blue 1981 Dodge St. Regis. It had 318 that I pulled out and dropped in a 440. Let me tell you what that old car was fun to drive. Keep up the good work!!!
just a tip, wash and prepsol/wax and grease remove BEFORE sanding, otherwise you can sand wax and sillycone into the painted surface causing problems later on
Nice job Dylan!!
Definitely an improvement...Can't wait to see the finished product...Awesome job Dylan!!!
I looked everywhere trying to find some of those turbo cans last summer to paint my truck bed, drove to neighboring cities and everything before I finally gave up and forgot all about it, I may have to revisit it once it warms back up
Try a 3m eraser wheel on that decals in the future.
Always loved these diplomats
IMHO, this is a great job. If I was recreating an old Mopar police car,I’d paint the back doors white also. Give it that Adam 12 look
Looking good Dylan! Your cop car is almost done! Thanks for sharing! ❤️
cant complain about how it came out looks great !!!
Came out 100 percent better, too bad you couldn't let the body come up to temp. Great job 👍👍🇺🇸🇺🇸
Good work sir on such a low budget!

Don't know if this is what happened, but some of the spray paint I have used lately will badly wrinkle and look terrible if you try to recoat and do not wait at least 48 hours. Either put all coats on in less than an hour, or wait 48 hrs. Thanks for the vids! 👍👍

I have found things like that to happen from not letting the paint off gas before applying more. Not sure the physics of how or why but I do know it's the solvent escaping the paint and if you recoat before it escapes it will find a way out by forcing the paint away making cracks and dots..aka solvent pop

But not to knock it what so ever, it looks decent and I have done several rattle can car sprays and although a lot turned out not so good,I have had some nice ones in recent years mostly because I have learned to do several lighter coats and wait proper time in between them. But the real trick is getting the paint thick enough so you can wet sand and polish it out if you do just a color coat, several coats of clear if you want to sand and polish that avenue.
Paint job looks really good. For 115 dollars that’s not bad at all.
I need to try those turbo cans. I painted my 66 F100 with regular rattle cans. I pretty much did the same prep wise and it turned out decent. Flat olive drab. I didn't fix any dents because I'm not a body guy whatsoever.

Looks good Sir !
Awesome job Painting Thank you for the video
The result is amazing, dylan! I'm excited to see what the next steps will be🤯💪👍
If you spray paint an area then try and paint over it the next day. It will wrinkle. It is because the paint underneath has no hardener and causes the paint underneath to lift. Always try and paint from one end of the panel to the other.....like a robot would paint it 👍
It looks great!
If the nozzles come off, blow them out with your air compressor when you're dine for the day. I've done it that way for decades, and I've rarely had one clog up. Careful putting the nozzle back on the can! If you make it spray you'll have to start over with the air.
Looks amazing! Love it! Always wanted to do a diplomat like that!
Great video, had no idea it would come out looking so nice!
I recently did my Suzuki Sidekick hard top and interior floors with the Turbo Bedliner. Super impressed with the product!

That’s looks awesome, okay if you wet sanded it! And you don’t need any additional tools. Love it
Man I love those big cans . Ive never saw those. Gotta find them . Awesome. Pex
Proper prepp and prime. A gallon of paint at at tractor supply can even reduce with gas.
Nice paint job! Good music too.

Good vid, Dylan! I've seen a few "rattle can" paint job videos -- you definitely made it look do-able. Thanks for showing us how! steve
What a challenge, IMHO the paint came out pretty darn good I mean you admit you are not a paint and body man, you had to build your own paint booth, you painted in low temperature and used spray bombs. It came out great and looks 100% better. Nice job!!
23:36 VERY impressive Dily!!!! You still have to make that new police star logo on the front doors!
Turned out great. Looks alot better. Love it
came out great. i've gotta find some of that paint! i suggest you reinstall the spotlite, it will be a great touch of authenticity
Keep up the great work. You did a awesome job on your car.
Hi Dylan I think 🤔 the paint looks great 👍 I like 👍 it because it looks like 👍 the blue brothers and they had a good car 🚗 I like old cars 🚘 and I glad you are enjoying fixing it you have a nice day 😮
Excellent results dude. Especially considering the temp, and the makeshift booth. Turned out sharp. One thing about broken paint cans, I always hold em upside down, let the propellant out, and cut the bottom of the can off, save the paint in little airbrush jars, or just a small mason jar. It will keep pretty good, and sprays from an airbrush very well
Nice job. I love the hubcaps on those cars.
Wow Dillon, turned out great for a spray bomb job! Excellent job my friend!!!
