Budget Fujifilm Lens - TTArtisan 23mm F1.4
This week we tried out this fully manual 23mm F1.4 lens from TTArtisan. I have been wanting to try out the 23mm focal length for quite a while and this week I got the chance to. It was an interseting process for a few reasons and I thought I would share my thoughts on the focal length and this lens in particular which sells for £129 brand new. Hopefully this is helpful to any of you who are interested in some alternative lens brands on a budget.

People have become so obsessed with autofocus they couldn't imagine using a manual focus lens here and there. I guess it's the same mentality with Film vs digital. Why bother with film even if it helps one to understand photography better by paying more attention to what your're shooting. In many cases manual focus is not the answer when you need a quick pic and can't spend time taking the shot. Zone focusing is great to know if you use manual lenses a lot. Guess I'm more old school than I realize. I love autofocus yet I have the time to compose etc. It's not a race for me. 35mm equivalent is great for me. I like even wider in many cases. So, (blah blah blah) LOL, for 100 bucks or less, a 1.4 lens that is built like this lens is a no brainer if you're half way serious about photography IMHO... Great video and well described!! Thanks

Hey Kevin! I agree, there is something really nice about using a film camera and spending more time on each shot. I do find focusing can be a little frustrating at times but it is also a part of the process which. When it comes to focusing a manual lens on a digital camera I did find this to be frustrating too especially because you have to expose for highlights which essentially makes everything else really dark in the viewfinder and almost impossible to focus at times. For $100 it is a bargain and a nice focal length, I just won't be rushing to pick it up I don't think haha Thanks though appreciate it ✌

I like fiddling with my gadgets. So I’m ordering this lens. And will learn & appreciate it!
I have focus peaking (Red Low or Red Medium) turn on automatically when I switch the front switch to Manual. And I have that front button set to the Zoom thingy. Peaking is enough if the sensitivity is set appropriate for the light (medium at night, low when sunny), but I'll zoom in quite often if I want to make sure I nail it.
Great video! Looking forward to seeing more of your stuff. This lens looks decent, I’m looking to get it for video. Most of the shots I’m thinking of shooting this lens with will be on a tripod so I feel it could work well..

Thanks very much appreciate that :) I mean as long as you aren't doing talking heads shots or anything it would work fine for still video shots where focusing is pretty simple. It is a nice focal length..
Thanks for making this review Mac. I wanted to ask if this lend is good for video? Does this have any focus breathing issues? Appreciate you covering manual focus lenses. Should This be my first manual focus lens? Would love a reply. Im an apsc video shooter.

Hey there ✌ Honestly we didn't really use it much for video so I am not sure. It doesn't have stabilization so that will be a probably for video. I haven't tried many manual focus lenses so I couldn't say but for the price the photos that were in focus turned out okay I think. The 23mm focal range is quite nice I will say that.

Hello. Did you have a hard time adjusting from your subject? Tried the 50mm. It’s actually great for portrait shots if the area is wide open. How about 23mm?

Hey there, It definitely felt a little wide at first but I got used to it pretty quick and by the end of the session I quite enjoyed 23mm. 50mm is great for portraits too 👌
One more question. Do you know if the crop factor is applied when you mount a ttartisan or fuji lens, on a fuji camera (micro four thirds). Or will it be what it sais (eg: 23mm equivalent to a 23mm). It might sound a bit confusing.

This lens is built to fit APSC cameras so the 23mm lens is 23mm on a fuji camera. Compared to full frame 23mm on APSC is about 35mm on a full frame sensor 👍
@macnteensvisuals is there a lens hood that can be used while using a filter on this lens? The original Lens cap is horrible

Honestly not sure about that, I didn't look lol
Really nice video! This lens (and other Chinese lenses like this) is a "gift" for the photographic community. A perfectly built photographic tool, with unique optical rendering and character (something that's missing even from the modern Leica M APO lens iterations sadly) and for cheap price! I am using it for a full year now and its permanently mounted on my Sony a6000. If you are enjoy to take pictures (and not making money out of it) this lens is a no brainer!

Hey & thanks very much. Totally agree, having cheaper lens options is always a good thing and some of them actually seem to be built pretty well tbh. It's nice to have the option to try out different primes without hurting the wallet too much haha
have you done a video to compare the 23mm and 27mm? thanks for your relaxed, meditative approach

I have just one autofocus lens (FUJI XF35 F2) in my collection hahahahaha. Most of my lens are vintage to have more "film look" on fuji. If you can try some Carl Zeiss Flektogon 35mm 2.4f or Meyer Optik lenses.

I ended up just using peaking to find a general area of focus so I guess I was sort of using a zone focus method haha
