    As someone that can actually play Neil's YYZ parts exactly, I'd say Mike did a great job, as expected. We all grew up with this music and its still alive today in all our music and in the various cover bands still doing it. It might not even have been rehearsed by the band and Mike. They all just know it, as many lifelong drummers do, as the "rite of passage" that one has to attain to achieve expert. RIP, Neil.

    I think the fact that neither Mike Portnoy nor Danny Carey, both great drummers who play quite complex drum parts, can play this song properly speaks to the true size of Neil Peart as a drummer. He was incomparable.

    Can't play it properly or just didn't desire to? I can be highly critical at times but Mike kept it close enough here.

  • @FerF123

    @FerF123

    @@freegee3503 By appropriately I mean that in some parts he can't follow the tempo and has to adjust to get back into the song, like the snare roll at 1:55, or when he flips the ride pattern in the guitar solo, after a snare fill. The same thing happened to Danny Carey in the Neil Peart tribute when he played with Geddy Lee and Alex Lifeson and it's because Neil and Rush were much more complex than they look, very unique. And nobody makes mistakes on purpose.

  • @freegee3503

    @@FerF123 Excellent points! I also don't believe Mike made those errors on purpose. It is more like he didn't care to play it perfectly or as close to the original recording. More like that he didn't feel he needed to take the song so seriously. He definitely has the potential to do so. Me- I would have taken the opportunity more seriously and would have even made sure that there was a triangle with the kit or I would have brought one. To honor Neil I would have held that triangle up quite proudly and made sure it was seen by everyone. The bell of the ride cymbal to start the song was weak in my opinion.

    Me thinks you are taking this way too seriously. This is probably a no-prep deal and on someone else's kit. They are just having fun and Mike doesn't play Rush tunes every day of his life. I would kill to be able to pull YYZ off that well! Neil Peart, while great, was not the be all and end all of drumming. After all, the drum parts for Rush tunes were his creation and he played them ad infinitum. So naturally, he was the best at it.

    I’m sick of hearing people say “RUSH need to get back together with this guy or that guy.” There is only one “guy” they should get back together with and that guy is dead so get over it and move on. Nobody can play those parts the way Neil did and it would only serve to tarnish their history by trying to recapture the past with another drummer. The R40 tour was the perfect end to their illustrious career.

    I love Rush and have since 1981, and you are 100% correct, they gave us 40+ years, they went out on top of their game, any kind of re assembling of Rush now would tarnish their legacy, having 2 of the 3 guys would also change the great chemistry these guys had, plus I don't think Alex and Geddy would do that for various reasons their way to loyal to Neil and are way too classy to do that to fans. Now they might go out with a new name and a new drummer and play a Rush song or 2 , but we all know Rush is Alex, Geddy and Neil.

    whether or not the band is good does not matter to me - what matters is that musicians like this feel they can act "triumphantly" while playing music created by others and use their name to promote themselves - if you can be honest with yourself and ask real hard questions, they are promoting themselves using the music of Rush and the nickname (that everyone knows) of Neil Peart. At best it is disingenuous - frankly it makes me sick.

    @@sjdrummerboy Thats fine - the band is still promoting itself through the use of Neil's name and posting it on youtube. They are not Rush and are not Neil - the donation is nice, yet they still seek to promote themselves by "honoring" Neil - it's disingenuous. My commentary is subjective and limited to my opinion and I know others will disagree, but if one asks themselves the hard questions, the motives are clear.

    Every musician that performed was a friend of Neil. And even the Rush sound Crew was there running the show. Every musician on that stage is a professional musician with an honorable music career. They do the benefit for a reason not personal gain for themselves. The donation link is even in the description. So that others can donate in Neil’s honor who don’t have access to Bubba Bash.

    I find it disappointing that Mike Portnoy can’t play the song note for note. Or doesn’t play it note for note. I’ve played in a lot of cover bands with drummers who can play that song perfectly. My take take on playing Rush in a cover band is if you’re going to play it it better be perfect.
