So many “comparing” Mike and Neil. Why? Mike is Mike and Neil is Neil. Both masters and beautiful artists. Mike live Neil and was inspired by him and that’s a beautiful thing.

I like how everyone is complaining about the drum solo and saying this isn't a cover. They are covering a live version, in which Neil Peart has an extremely long drum solo.

Agree, they do a great job, fantastic... my only comment is the tempo was just a bit too fast. Rush is a bit more mellow.

@@macintosh3990 They had their nights even for the classic songs where tempo was a bit slow or fast. I feel blessed to have seen them so many times from Moving Pictures and on... Still feel such a loss over Neil's passing

@@macintosh3990 I dunno, Exit Stage Left had a down tempo YYZ, but theres definitely other up tempo versions of YYZ. So not even Rush was 100% on the tempo, nothing wrong with that at all though.

@Wida A Huh? They both released in 1981, Exit Stage Left was several months after Moving Pictures released, I think. Go listen through the album again, really good stuff. That recording of YYZ is down tempo and has like a 2 or 3 minute long drum solo. ESL also has a really great version of Red Barchetta.

I love how Paul Gilbert worked in "The Spirit of Radio" and "Xanadu" into the ending. (BTW for anyone who was wondering, those are the songs.)

some may argue that he's overrated. All I can get from the mighty internet is actually admiration of how good he is. The fact is many underrate how good Mangini is at DT filling MP position.

@@iganpparamarta8813 people criticise Portnoy quite alot actually... He rushes his time, no new ideas for years, horrible personality. Fact is everyone is a brave expert when sat behind a keyboard. Same with Mangini...horrible drum sound, no feel, no creativity in his DT drum parts. These come up all the time. I'm not agreeing with any of it Btw... Just saying that Internet opinions are rife on both drummers. I guess it's just which ones you're sensitive to?

I love the fact that Mike basically did the drum solo from Exit Stage Left with a little of himself thrown in. I like this.

For people saying that protnoy is lacking ability, listen to the dance of eternity. He's one of the best technical drummers ever to live.

Gilbert’s pinch harmonics are fabulous. He is a guitar for all seasons virtuoso imho. Right up there with Jeff Beck and Eric Johnson in carving beautifully bizarre and often mysterious fills and solos.

So nice to be able to have Neil's 80's drumset exact replica and without spending one penny!

Wow, these guys nailed it! So much talent on display here. Even Alex's tone comes through when Paul plays.

It's impossible to select the neck pickup on a bass which doesn't have one. That's a Gary Willis signature bass.

Without Peart there would be no Dream Theatre or a milllllllion other Prog rock bands. Before Rush it was just jazz students showing off chops. After it actually exceeded the pop sensibilities LYRICALLY. Thank you, Neal, Alex and Geddy.

The liberties taken were refreshing and the surprise tribute riffs at the end were cool. Good job! 👍

Ya. Thinking the same, it was a nice way to end and they frickin nail it. That's actually rather hard to do as a group of musicians. It's beyond a jam and mentally switching time signatures is a killer that only the most talented can pull off without a conductor. Seriously talented group of guys here. Any originals??

It's quite incredible how much Rush has impacted so many people and so bands over the years. They really did set so many standards.

Just found out about this on IG, excellent rendition of one of my all time favorites, loved the homage to Neil during the Drum solo too.

There will never be another Neil Peart, but damn Mike Portnoy is as close as anyone will ever get! RIP Professor!

@@chazbono5991 They dont play it as good as Rush (pre 2003). Portnoy is way too heavy handed (which makes sense considering he's a metal musician). And the three of them just arent quite as in sync (again, makes sense considering they havent been playing together for 30+ years.)

He definitely is. There are definitely better drummers, sure, but as the "public face" of drumming? Mike is the closest we have to Neil. He's someone the general (read: non-drummer) population can grab onto. He's incredibly skilled and because of his time in Dream Theater, he's much more well known than most other drummers, and he's also big on publicity (unlike Neil) so he has a leg up on taking the crown.

He's the former bassist for Cynic, a progressive death metal band; he's also the mind behind Gordian Knot a jazz fusion/prog rock outfit. Incredible musician, and always plays on a fretless.

He also had an album called Cortlandt that was basically the precursor for what was to become Gordian Knot, but was released under Sean Malone's name. Definitely worth checking out ANY material he's been involved with.

Love MP's tribute to Neil Pert's cowbell solo that Neil performs in his classic drumsolo that I think almost everyone has heard, at least everyone who listens to Rush and progressive bands in excess, or are super-interested in drums, or are serious music-buffs. Awesome tribute, from some seriously talented musicians, Paul Gilbert and Mike Portnoy are some seriously talented guys, that deserve better credits then people give them.

Simply just FANTASTIC!

RIP Sean Malone. One of the greatest!

Damn Paul Gilbert got even the tiniest inflections of the guitar playing right in this song. Amazing.

I saw this live here in Chicago. Long live The Drum Pad (the shop that organized this, unfortunately closed a few years ago when Jim retired)... Malone was the star of the show. They also had a singer who sounded quite close to Geddy. I forget his name, I think it was Jason McSomething... a redheaded dude. Good memories!

Really, really awesome, they are very talented musician obviusly but when i close my eyes and listen to the song its just no rush but if anyone can pull an awesome tribute is this guys
