With that first tight squeeze I would have dropped the jeep then winched it through the trees so you could use the Jeep's steering, instead of cutting down the tree

Good thing the guy was in the jeep. I know a lot of modern wreckers have a chain that hangs out the back of the body through a chain grab cut into the body that they use, or, well, are supposed to use, when road traveling. I used to follow a youtuber named Reponut who discussed those safety chains a few times and I've seen them hanging off the back of trucks sometimes.

Could have ratchet strapped the single tree into the group of 5 to the right and just bent the tree enough to get past it

Most wreckers I know of on road have a pair of safety chains connected to the chassis of the towed vehicle back to chain hooks welded to the wrecker body. Crossed over so they don't bind up on sharp corners and completely independent of each other and of the main towing hookup, I'm surprised you haven't done this before given the harsh environment you tow in.

Problem is is anything tied between the sling and the truck bed will bind up given the terrain he goes through. When I'm in rough country in my 85 GMC I don't use safety chains til I'm back on pavement

if you would have locked up the rear of the jeep it would have tracked straight with the truck or just lower the jeep on the ground so he could have steered it around the tree

no fun when they come loose . i have had that happen to me too. i was lucky i had an extra chain on it that kept it together and it really shoved the old truck around . glad i was going slow when it came loose . that one safety chain is all that saved it . didn't do any damage . lucky is right . makes your heart jump too.lol safe wheeling and keep 'em coming .

So I'm not the rocket scientist, but instead of cutting trees, why did you not drop the jeep and use the cable to pull...let the owner of the jeep behind you steer around the obstacle??? yes, it might be rough but he should still be able to steer.
