    That last shot looked like the truck roof won't clear the garage door. Or maybe the front wheels will drop down after clearing the doorway. I may look again. Great to see you guys making progress, and nearly ready for the trail. The little odds and ends will take some time, but you got the major stuff pretty much there! We are sending positive energy your way.

    Truck is coming together really nice. Tons of work, but I am sure it is a labor of love. You'll be happy with the disks in the rear. The E-brake might be an issue, but I am sure it can be overcome.

    In my opinion I would have never converted rear drums to disks. Rear disks don't produce as much stopping power as the large drums that you had. Also, I think a lot of people forget that the drum brakes don't require a power booster. This means if your power booster fails and you have 4 wheel disks then you almost got no brakes since disks require a power booster. This actually had happened to me after the vacuum hose broke from the check valve at the brake booster. On another occasion, I had a 2002 Yukon XL 1500 with 4 wheel disks standard and the front brakes hose broke. The rear disks by themselves couldn't stop the truck completely without shifting the transmission into neutral.

    When running out on the trails, through mud and sand, it gets trapped in the drums. The sand and mud wears out the brake shoes very fast. I was replacing rear brake shoes 2 or three times a summer. The disc brake pads last for 2-3 years running in the dirt/mud. That was the main reason for the swap.

    I know you said it's not a show quality paint job but, I've literally seen paint jobs and shops that are no where near as good as this and these guy are supposedly pros and this is they're profession of choice and someone actually paid them to do it !!! As far as I can see, u did a pretty damn good job. I want to try it for myself atleast once to see if I have the skills. Hell, I can do just about anything else automotive....why not try to paint...am I right !!! I wanna get your opinion on an engine project that I'm doing, if u don't mind me asking some questions. Let me know if you're willing to give your opinion.

    Why the disc brakes for offroad use? I've found the anti-rattle clips tend to corrode and the pads wear unevenly when they get mucked up. I've found drums to have better parking brakes than disc too. For an offroad truck I'm not 100% convinced that disc is a good choice, for OTR towing it makes a lot of sense.

  • @l337pwnage

    @l337pwnage

    9 жыл бұрын

    eformance I would probably keep the drums cuz I'm lazy and those particular drums do not lack stopping power, but some prefer disc because they don't trap water and mud as easy. Another thing I could see, in his case, is drum brakes use a wedging effect to stop, so they have considerably more stopping power in forward than reverse. Well, that means when he is using his microlock system and winching off the back, the brakes do not have their full holding power available. Disc brakes stop just as well in either direction. Or, maybe he just likes the idea of having disc brakes, which is why I think 99% of the people do the conversion. ;)

  • @offroadrecoveryteam

    @offroadrecoveryteam

    9 жыл бұрын

    l337pwnage The big reason for the disc brake conversion is the mud and sand was wearing out the shoes in the drum brakes in about 3-4 weekends out on the trails.

    With watching that one video where you lost your rear brakes, do you think that would have not happened if you would have drained the differential here while you were doing the disc brake conversion to get all the water & gunk out of it, or did that happen after the axle was rolled under the new truck????
