I knew my girlfriend since she was seven and I was nine she was my neighbor. In 1980 when this song came out, I was 19 and she was 17 we dated. She was a shy, blonde haired, beautiful girl, and I came from a terrible background. I was the captain of the football team, pretty popular and pretty much a tough guy since I had to be due to my upbringing ,at 19 and 17 she was expecting and we got married. I had to drop out of college. She has become a stay at home mom as a baby her self. We got married like this song describes. I got a job in construction & a union card at 19 years old, we have now been married 42 years. It has not been easy, but we never quit. She is the most beautiful woman still inside and out. By the grace of God we are still together and have a thriving business . God is good. There are no mistakes in life just unexpected. Blessings!!!!

Thank you, Bruce! I'm in the middle of my broken relationship and this morning your song came inzo my mind and I can't stop crying. All my life I've tried to break away from the patterns in my family, but I've failed. Life is so hard sometimes. So hard to keep an open innocent heart...

He had Clarence's son, and Danny's son and daughter join on stage during 10th Ave. Freezeout. Who else does this for an encore after playing for two hours: Prove It All Night My Love Will Not Let You Down Badlands Tougher Than the Rest Because the Night Jungleland Thunder Road Wrecking Ball Born to Run Dancing in the Dark Rosalita (Come Out Tonight) Tenth Avenue Freeze-out Shout Bobby Jean

I think one of the things that sets this performance apart from other versions of The River is his slumped posture and the visible agony in his eyes. The song of a man with his dreams trampled beneath the feet of life, sung as it should be.

My favourite version of this wonderful song. Bruce is at his passionate best.❤❤❤❤❤❤❤
I cannot relate to this song. But I feel all of it. Sucha beautiful timeless piece by The Boss. Thank you Bruce Bringsteen from a ‘younger’ fan. God bless
My dad played this album so much when I was a kid that I could sing every song on the album by heart. This song was and still is my favorite. I grew up in a small town in Ohio right on the Ohio river. It has always reminded me of my parents and where I grew up. When I was young, I use to say to myself: “How did Bruce know so much about my life?” Thanks Bruce!

Lyrics: I come from down in the valley Where, mister, when you're young They bring you up to do like your daddy done Me and Mary we met in high school When she was just seventeen We drive out of this valley Down to where the fields were green We'd go down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh, down to the river we'd ride Then I got Mary pregnant And man, that was all she wrote And for my nineteenth birthday I got a union card and a wedding coat We went down to the courthouse And the judge put it all to rest No wedding day smiles, no walk down the aisle No flowers, no wedding dress That night we went down to the river And into the river we'd dive Oh, down to the river we did ride Yeah, yeah I got a job working construction For the Johnstown Company But lately there ain't been much work On account of the economy Now all them things that seemed so important Well mister they vanished right into the air Now I just act like I don't remember Mary acts like she don't care But I remember us riding in my brother's car Her body tan and wet, down at the reservoir At night on them banks I'd lie awake And pull her close just to feel each breath she'd take Now those memories come back to haunt me They haunt me like a curse Is a dream a lie if it don't come true Or is it something worse That sends me down to the river Though I know the river is dry That sends me down to the river tonight Down to the river My baby and I Oh, down to the river we ride-ide Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh Ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh-ooh

When he does this song live, it's like a religious experience.
God , I drove my mother crazy playing this LP. We were in small town Australia early 80’s , but somehow this spoke to me. I think she really grew to love Bruce, RIP mum, love you.
This IS the American Dream. The yearning, the desperation. It’s missing today. You deserve the best as an American. Don’t settle. That’s what Bruce is saying. We all deserve our dreams.
The Boss... The only one who's able to tell the story of a whole life in just one single song.
Who would have thought that a simple "Oooh oooh oooh" could be so beautiful?
Nothing like heading down to the Jersey shores. Listen to Bruce Springsteen since the 70 s
It somehow captures the feeling of nostalgia. Like it reminds you of being young and confused. It’s just so haunting and brilliant.

One of the best live performances of any song by any artist ever. This performance taught me that conveying feeling is a million times more important than singing technically flawless. And when you can do both, there's this.

Me and Mary met when I was 23 and she was 21, got married 5 years later. 2 kids and 20 years later, we're still together. We had our river and when those memories come back it's only sweet and not bitter. I'm glad I've held on, it was one of the most happiest days of my life.

I'm 14, and I feel the exact same way about this song
Still takes me back to my bedroom in Liverpool as a kid in '81 listening to both vinyl discs of the album for the first time, reading the lyrics as I went, thinking 'I've cracked it - this is what real life is all about.' Obviously I hadn't cracked it then [still haven't now!] but I learned so much about hope, respect, hard work, romance, disappointment, trust, friendship, etc that I've carried with me since and have helped on my own journey through life.
This song teaches us what the song which makes people cry, best of the best song ever I’ve ever heard.
"These memories the haunt me, they haunt me like a curse" I always have to swallow back tears when I hear that. This song is following me since I first heard it when I was at highschool when this epic work first came out.
The river offers a baptismal soul-cleansing. When the narrator was young it never mattered how bad things in life got because he (and Mary) could go down to the river and somehow that would make everything alright - at least for a little while. This is why the symbolism towards the end of the song is so damn heartbreaking. In the end even the river isn't there anymore. It dried up. Now there's no escape, no source of redeption for the narrator. You grow up and there's nothing that can make things right anymore. Springsteen is a pretty switched-on writer - and I think he's hip to the multiple layers of meaning that can be contained in a rich powerful song like this.

Never really looked at the symbolism that way but I think you nailed it. She was 16 I was eighteen on my ninetenth birthday she delivered me a son who only weighed 3 pounds 6 ounces. The doctor who delivered him, not the one we had paid, told me he didn't have a chance. Went down to the NIC unit to see him before he passed but the nurses all hugged and guarented me he'd be fine and 6 weeks later we brought him home. Then we went down to the river and into the river we dived, He's a strapping young man 5'10 170# The marriage soon fell apart and I raised him alone from the time he was three. Then I met the most beautiful woman who wrapped her love around both of us and our lives were complete.
Gotta sat this is his best song. So powerful !
Bruce is such a fantastic talent. His music is timeless, and will still be played long after I am gone. Wonderful!

That's a BOLD statement, man, especially going up against live performances like The Who "A Quick One While He's Away" from The Rolling Stones Rock And Roll Circus '68, The Eagles "A New Kid In Town" from D.C. '76, The Allman Brothers Live at The Fillmore, Little Feat "Waiting For Columbus," The Band "The Last Waltz," Frampton Comes Alive, Rush "Xanadu" Live '81, etc. And I didn't even mention The Beatles or Led Zep. Damn good, but THE BEST!? I think not... They didn't even perform this in the same key as the studio version.

It’s so much better live than the studio performance, he sings this with so much passion that u don’t necessarily feel on the original, as for the best live artists I’m guessing you haven’t seen pink Floyd or roger waters or Celine Dion or Cher or Bon Jovi or even Tina turner live n that’s just 6. I’ve seen about 60 artists live n believe me Bruce is one of the best out there

Springsteen has given us decades of unforgettable music. But for me, that period book-ended by "Darkness on the Edge of Town" and "The River" was the crowning achievement of his career. Those two albums, and all the live recordings in the two years or so between them, were like nothing before or since. And this song and performance encapsulate all of that in seven minutes of heart-breaking beauty. BTW, Roy Bittan never gets enough credit for his piano work during this period.

The River=Their lives and the loss of their happiness. The River started out as their escape away from everyone else. Once Mary became pregnant and he started working they were going there less and less. Then everything falls apart and The River becomes only a memory in the past and can no longer be the escape they needed and missed. "Though I know the river is dry..." There's nothing left of their love with no chance of it ever being there again.

So much better than the studio version. Gut-wrenching and real, he evokes as much emotion with his harmonica as his voice. The band supports him in a beautiful way, and like all his music, it is the combination of his poetry, voice, and the amazing band that results in music that transcends.

The River ist Springsteens größtes Kunstwerk. Darum Platz 1 in unseren Bruce Springsteen Top-10! Ps. 👇🏼👇🏼👇🏼 Hab ich bei googel entdeckt 🙏 ❤️
