Chorus:
I walked the avenue, 'til my legs felt like stone
I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone
At night I could hear the blood in my veins
It was just as black and whispering as the rain
On the Streets of Philadelphia
Ain't no angel gonna greet me
It's just you and I, my friend
My clothes don't fit me no more
I walked a thousand miles
Just to slip this skin

This song never fails to bring me to tears. It brings to my mind and heart my first love, who perished from AIDS in 1991. He and I had parted ways 10 years before he died, but he never married, nor had anyone in his life, so my husband and I cared for him for the 8 months he lived after being diagnosed with AIDS. My husband is a magnificent, caring, compassionate man to have accepted this responsibility, and I am forever grateful to and for him. ❤

Homeless now, sleeping in my car, was military for 13 years and was diagnosed with a heart arrythmia issue that side lined. Just had surgery the other day on my heart and I'm in my car recovering, seen another homeless guy and I didn't have much myself and I gave him my water and he cried and it hit me, especially the part in this song that no angel is goin to great me, it's just you and me my friend..... God bless and merry Christmas! Update: I am in a apartment, car broke down last month but still walk to work, I still owe on that care because I had not great credit when I got it from the bills I defaulted on because I had to miss work over the heart stuff, but I have since filed bankruptcy, got a apartment, rebuilding credit and knock on wood my heart is holding up now! I had to have an Ablation procedure done and some other things but I’m holding up. Tryin to pay off this car to get a newer car and have one I’m paying on that I can drive. I appreciate the love and support! Not all homeless are fake nor do they ask for help, just remember that. We’re just like you but something happened to side line us, try and remember that.

I wish I could meet you or any one with substance. Covid has shown us all up and this banal materialistic world. I cry whenever I hear this man's voice.
The capture of Springsteen's voice while walking, his neglected apparence and the unscripted reaction of people give this clip a raw and unmatch power that goes straight to the heart.

🤔I found the 90s to be a boring decade. Flannel shirts were comfy though. We also got to see computers and cell phone technology evolve and expand more around 1997 to the smaller affordable ones. Cell phones in the 80s were heavy, expensive or installed in cars. But yeah, youtube is great for finding all the old videos that once played on MTV. Most of us born in the 70s havent acknowledged its existence since 2000.

Actually, it's not living, it's surviving, right? I can't even imagine how tough it is in my warm home, my warm, clean bed with my belly full. Stay strong mate, keep fighting those demons 😈 (booze/drugs are demons) Great Disturbed song: THE LIGHT, can give ppl strength, especially the live version, where ppl put up their hands who fought these demons themselves or know someone! Agree and feel somewhat the same about this song… kzread.info/dash/bejne/jIuh1MigmpOziqw.html
This song makes me cry because I was homeless and many times wanted to give up because it definitely felt like no matter how hard I tried I could never better my situation. All the people I thought were my friends and that I helped over many years all turned their heads like they didn’t know me and I saw their true selves which to me was sad because I knew if they were in my situation I would try to help in anyway I could no matter what. It wasn’t really my fault for being homeless I had lost job and then everything went down hill. I lost all my belongings down to what I could carry. I feel bad for those out there going through it and I pray for them everyday. Even while I was homeless I helped a pregnant girl that was homeless with her boyfriend who were fighting over $20 that he wanted to buy liquor and she just wanted food so I got her some food with my food stamps to take back to their tent. Just see her smile was the best thank you. If people would understand that those who are homeless aren’t always there because of drugs or doing bad stuff, sometimes things just go bad for them like it did me. I’m glad after 3 yrs of being on the streets I finally got into my own home and did it all on my own. I lost a lot of things that I can’t replace but I’ve been able to replace what I could. But I’m glad I never gave up and I promised myself never to walk that road again no matter what. If we would all just give a helping hand to someone in need you would be surprised the simplest thing makes a big difference and helps in the biggest way. God bless and I pray all those stay warm during these winter months and pray our government would start to see the we need to solve our own problems before we keep sending all this help and money to these other countries when we have children and adults worried about their next meal and a safe place to lay their head at night. That’s not what God wanted for us!!! Open your hearts!!!

I am 46 and still in the streets never made out. I don't have a wife or kids.
Each time I am asked what song has moved me or left me broken hearted … it is this on all levels. It sheds bare our humanity or lack of it
The sound of the people, the sound of the streets, the live vocal performance of Springsteen edited with original studio recording is ahead of his time. Academy Award for Best Original Song and four Grammy Awards for Song of the Year, Best Rock Song, Best Male Rock Vocal Performance, and Best Song Written Specifically for a Motion Picture or Television.
This song remains as relevant as the day it was written. Powerful and soulful.

I walked the avenue, 'til my legs felt like stone I heard the voices of friends vanished and gone At night I could hear the blood in my veins Just as black and whispering as the rain On the streets of Philadelphia Ain't no angel gonna greet me It's just you and I my friend And my clothes don't fit me no more A thousand miles just to slip this skin The night has fallen, I'm lyin' awake I can feel myself fading away So receive me brother with your faithless kiss Or will we leave each other alone like this On the streets of Philadelphia?

I went through a life altering physical cognitive condition, at times I lost basic freedoms like feeding myself & could not drive a car, I will never be the same or forget. This music video was playing throughout various stages of grief, trauma, loss of identity, the gnashing of teeth we call the journey of life.. This song touches beautifully on the human condition and romanticizes modern suffering that can be related to all walks of life beyond. It is a song that allows people to grieve, whether love, heartbreak or cancer, everything in between, it facilitates the process within, it's a love poem within western culture icon that defies category or age. It is timeless and rare. Pop culture gem.

Your children are not your children. They are the sons and daughters of Life’s longing for itself. They come through you but not from you, And though they are with you yet they belong not to you. You may give them your love but not your thoughts, For they have their own thoughts. You may house their bodies but not their souls, For their souls dwell in the house of tomorrow, which you cannot visit, not even in your dreams. You may strive to be like them, but seek not to make them like you. For life goes not backward nor tarries with yesterday. - Kahlil Gibran - On Children

Yep. Not a springsteen fan but you are so right. Watch and see, it is already slowly turning around though. Look at the situation in 6 months and if I am wrong I am sorry. I doubt it though. The Father is sick of this.
What incredible magic! There I was, the start of the film "Philadelphia" up on the screen, fiddling around to get some subtitles (I'm old now and hard of hearing!) and the song drifted in...And I froze! Mermerized, and put on my headphones. It was HIM, it had to be HIM, but for the moment it didn't matter. There was the song to cry over. And when I had, and then done so again, I wiped my eyes, stopped the film and asked Google. It told me it was in fact The Boss, that amazing guy who wasn't spoiled by success but perfected by it. Bless him.
Love the way this was done, not using the studio vocals, just raw Springsteen. I was a young boy (11)when this was released, never really listened to it before, but I've heard it many times. Fills me with sadness and regret, but some hope too. Great "classic", in 2024

Hello Garry, I hope the you will not be upset when I say that I'm not a gay man with AIDS. Bruce's song The Streets Of Philadelphia is about what a man with AIDS can go through but the lyrics apply to many of us in so many other ways also. So, for example, when I identify with the lyrics "I was bruised and battered" I was indeed till very recently bruised and battered since November of 1971 but not because I have AIDS but because I suffered with anxiety and depression and much more else besides that I will not describe in this public space. I am a great fan of Springsteen but I did not go to his recent concert here in Dublin over two nights. I hope you see this post because KZread doesn't always work as it should for me. All the best, Peter Nolan. Dublin. Ireland.

Thanks for that Peter, and no I am not upset at all, I am a humanist and the song "works" for people on many levels. Although I have not suffered the "black dog" of depression or anxiety I am acutely aware the toll it takes on individuals and their families. I hope everything is well with you now and you are able to enjoy a fulfilled life on this beautiful planet we all live on. Just as an aside I am gigging with my band tonight so we will do a cover of this song and I will be thinking of you and yours, again thanks for posting.
Used to listen to this while pregnant and with my world falling apart, thanks God life is better now with my son but song makes me so nostalgic
This is my favorite song by him. Absolutely just Love this track, .that boat horn adds a nice touch,. The 90s was a great time for music and when MTV played music videos. The movie was good too. 👍
This song makes me cry. I can’t even listen and sing along bc It’s such a deep and sad song. If you know what it’s like to feel like you’re just wasting away…in a cold world… I guess we feel the lyrics deeper

Truth, WE have lost to many. My heart still breaks from the 70's to now...............
What a sensible and classy decision for Springsteen to capture live audio for this music video. It speaks to his sensibilities that he’d think it disingenuous to walk the streets of Philadelphia and lip sync in front of onlookers. The incorporating of live ambient noise really completes the whole aesthetic. I miss when mainstream music videos were chalk full of that kind of creativity. Definitely one of the all-time original Oscar winning songs.
