Bruce's strength is his songwriting, creating a mental picture with each song that is easy to visualize and relate to. Bruce and the band are also amazing live, tons of energy and fun onstage.

You can't go wrong with The Boss (admits the Rush fan). The E Street Band is so good at bringing Bruce's songs to life. They always have so much energy. The shows, which I regrettably have never been to, were so energetic. This song was a big hit for Bruce. If I have to recommend something else from him, Badlands is a favorite of mine.

This song feels so powerful. I felt the same way I felt as a 19 year old when I heard Fast Car. Run, keep going.

Some musicians develop in church, some in conservatories, and some in bars. Bruce and his band developed in the Jersey Shore bars. 50 years ago this month they were supposed to play at my high school. It was the Memorial Day weekend. The student promoters couldn’t sell enough tickets (500?) because too many of the students were heading down the shore. A great opportunity was missed.

I'm born and raised in Springsteen Country at the Jersey Shore. Bruce even played a concert in my high school's gym. I was only 4 months old, so I missed that show. The ticket stub is blown up and framed in the school though. No matter where I am, when I hear The Boss I'm back on the boardwalk. Bruce grew up in Freehold, NJ. It was a factory town that became a depressed area when the rug mill closed. Many of Bruce's early songs are about small town angst and breaking away from that world. Ironically Bruce now lives 10 minutes from Freehold on a horse farm in Colts Neck. True to his Jersey roots.

A great movie to watch to get a good introduction into his music is Blinded by the Light. Also, to get a better experience, next time, I recommend reacting to a live performance. He & the E Street Band give legendary shows.

Thank you so much for doing the lyric video. So many people request the live video from '85 which takes the song out of context. The words are so much more important. The lyrics are not entirely literal, they're imagery.... metaphors for daring to dream, and going after your dreams. The characters in the song are in a small, blue collar town and probably will never leave, but Bruce decides he can't achieve his dreams by staying stagnant. Also, Bruce borrowed the line "mansions of glory" from the hymn "My Jesus I Love Thee" (1864) which references John 14:2. I would describe his voice as "husky". Hey, thanks for listening. i appreciate it.

You said that when you're in the hood, you fall victim to your surroundings - and there's a Springsteen song from his debut album that has pretty much the same theme running though it. It's called "It's Hard to be a Saint in the City," and I think it's something you may be able to relate to.

That's the song I requested, not "Born To Run". I wanted to get his take on they lyrics..both the subject matter, and they flow/rhyme scheme as they compared to the rap he used to listen to. I also requested "Kitty's Back".

The message is pretty clear : you got to escape the gloomy life you might be trapped into and run and try to live a better life. But when you’re poor you have to run to catch and grab a better life. You have to try and escape the trap you’re in.

He's saying living in a small town sucks and there's got to be something more out there, but he's still young enough that he thinks what's out there includes his small town GF and they can both make it out of there together.

If you love a good sax, listen to Jungleland, epic song and sax. Do the live in Hype Park London 2009 version. Although the studio version was on the same album as this song (Born To Run), to see it live even almost 34 later is amazing. As for this song, it is about escaping a small town, the narrow opportunities, the family constraints. Knowing there is something better out there if you have courage to take the chance. If you don't take it while you are young you will end up stuck in that small town life, repeating your parents life and giving up on your own dreams.

You need to hear some YES the band and the bass player that was a major influence on Geddy Lee. You could start with roundabout, or Heart of the sunrise

Church,,,,,,, I am glad to see you do something besides RUSH. May I suggest next you try some ACDC. I think you would love " Let There Be Rock". Your RUSH journey started out on fire and then took a Left Turn somewhere. You missed most of their Greatest Stuff. You can't stop before hearing Side One of the album 2 1 1 2. Not only that but Closer To The Heart, The Trees, Lakeside Park and Fly by night.

i see this song as saying the same thing as Tracy Chapman's "Fast Car"... we stay in this situation knowing our hearts will die, or we can run. maybe, just, maybe start over without the hate or the ignorance or the abuse of this place here. imho.

"Born To Run" is definitely Bruce's signature song, but I was hoping since you're a rap/hip hop fan, I'd like to get your opinion on the lyrics/rhymes etc on this 1973 song "It's Hard To Be A Saint The City". Thanks. kzread.info/dash/bejne/oYOf1a2Cdsa5mNI.html
