What he said
The Boss is seventy three now and still selling out arenas. I saw him a couple of months ago and he has the energy of a thirty year old. Amazing performer.
They don't call Bruce The Boss for nothing. He gives legendary performances!!

Also a good point. If you can get a live performance through the copyright process it's worth the effort.
Clarence Clemons rocked that sax.
Springsteen is an American treasure. So glad you got around to him!
A Springsteen concert is the best way ever to spend three and a half hours of your life.
Song is about desperation and taking a risk to escape
For me, the video featuring the live version was more energetic and fun.
A live concert with him singing this gives you another whole experience....
"The highway's jammed with broken heroes on a last chance power drive" - one of the best lines in a song ever to be used as a reason for being late for work (Sopranos). Went all the way to Rotterdam to see Bruce. 82 I think. So worth the trip.

There's a reason for that
"Together, Wendy we can live with the sadness. I'll love you with all the madness in my soul". Bruce is so energetic and fun to watch that sometimes the depth of his lyrics get overlooked.
Best way to describe Bruce's sound is an "experience". He's certainly not an opera singer or a crooner, but I put him in the same category as say a Willie Nelson or Bob Dylan. None of those guys will ever be known for their amazing voices, but they are iconic in their own way, in the sense that they connect so well to their fans. You really have to dive into Bruce's catalog and understand the Americana feeling he creates. He's an American folk hero with a microphone, and his music is uplifting and pure America.

Uh, I strongly disagree. Bruce IS known for vocals. He is in the 'unique' category so naturally it would be polarizing- some will love it, some will hate it. But he did have a lot of quality in his voice. So that's the fight you can never win either way- because in the end it mostly comes down to personal taste and perspective. He's obviously not an opera singer or a polished tenor doing melismats on every step, but it's not something he was ever supposed to or aquired to do. I think the big point is that he just never cared much about sounding 'pretty', only about getting the emotions right. But he could sing and sound pretty when he wanted-it's the same guy who sang the River, I'm on fire, One step up and so on- all of which have nothing controversial in them in terms of singing, it's actually a beautiful baritone used right. So no disrespect, but I think putting him in the same category as (especially) Dylan is just wrong from a technical point of view. While Dylan simply wasn't blessed with much of a voice and it's a rather objective statement; Springsteen did have a good voice- how he was using it at different points in time is another history.
That clangy guitar sound. So cool. The kick-ass lyrics. So poetic. The kick-ass rock and roll. So American. So Epic. So Bruce.

Cool the way Clarence Clemons sax solo blew you away.....RIP to the "The Big Man"!
Was lucky enough to grow up 3 blocks from Bruce. He still eats out in local restaurants and shops himself in local grocery stores. Love his music simply because his songs are really about my youth (I am about 10 years younger than him however).
Bruce has a great rock&roll voice IMO.
This was the Sound of the Jersey Shore in the 70' s as the "House Band" at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park, Springsteen was waiting for his Big Break! Don Scher, the biggest concert promoter on the East Coast went to the Stone Pony to check him out. After the show, Scher told Springsteen, "Don't quit your Day Job kid, you'll Never be a Star" Scher's rival, Ron Delsner thought differently and helped make Bruce one of the biggest Stars in the World. Scher tried for years to get Bruce to sign with him , but he Never forgave him for that comment!
Springsteen was the voice of his generation. So many great songs.
Bruce is great songwriter and bandleader, and an incredibly generous guy. He frequently donates a portion of his ticket sale money to local shelters and to unemployed residents of the towns he tours.
The Boss! Still one of the best concerts I’ve been to.

Now you’re getting into some *REAL* rock-n-roll!!!!!
Saw Bruce 4x back in the late 70s. His shows were all no less than 3 hours long and he left it all on the stage when he finished. Amazing performer. Clarence Clemmons was a presence on the stage. RIP Mr. Clemmons.
Amazing in concert!!!
Hey, Salvog! A friendly "constructive" reminder. Like some others, a song like this has many micro-builds and mini-climaxes. Pausing to comment is great, but I think I speak for many that RE-WINDING FIVE SECONDS after making it is an excellent idea. If not, you may really be cheating yourself of a supercool transition, etc, and imo many of us go "GAH! You MISSED it!"

I'm not a Bruce Springsteen fan, though I like some of his songs. He's had several hits, but for me his best song - and it's a great signature song - is "Born to Run." That's a 5 out of 5 stars song. His "Blinded by the Light" is the signature song, I'd say, for the Manfred Mann Earth Band. Their take on it is EXCELLENT.
this song is definitely one of the 10 best songs in rock music history...!!!!!
No one touches the big man on his sax!!!! RIP Clarence.
Bruce didn't become a singles force until the "Born in the USA" album in 1984…but his most impactful work was before that, IMO. Ultra-famous critical songs include "Rosalita", "Thunder Road", "Backstreets", "Jungleland" and "The River". That doesn't even come close to scratching the surface, but it's as good a place to start as anywhere.

I just saw Springsteen live for the 12th time in February. The first time was on my 17th birthday in 1977. Still the best concert I've ever been to and I've been to hundreds of concerts.
I have to say, I'm the biggest"BRUCE" fan in Cleveland for over forty-five years! His concerts are outstanding, over three hours long! Listen to Thunder Road on the Born to Run album. It showcases Clarence "The Big Man" Clemons. RIP, Big Man. You have to watch his songs live. The whole audience is one with Bruce. Bruce is Cleveland's first "Adopted Son!"
One of the greatest albums ever made!

On of the best live performers alive today .The Boss his live shows are an event an experience that should be experienced at least once in your lifetime.
I’ve never been a Springsteen fan, but I absolutely acknowledge his unique storytelling abilities and his influence. He’s a legend for a reason.
This was a must -have album when it came out; that's how much of an impact it had. One of the hardest working band.
My favorite Bruce Springsteen song is "Thunder Road". Recommend!
Congratulations Salvo, you just made me feel 10 years older than I actually am. Never heard Springsteen? What made him was his epic, legendary live performance. Phil Spector ( producer turned murderer) invented "the Wall of Sound" in the early 60's; which is, if it made sound, it was in the studio, and it was recorded. Try "meeting across the river" and "blinded by the light!"

@William DeMerchant very cool 😎 choices yourself!
You should listen to the live harmonica driven version of this. It’s awesome and gives his lyrics a lot of room to tell the story. His voice has a “lived in” quality to me, with a gritty realism that contrasts the impetuous optimism of this song very well.
Don't you think the music portrays the urgency of the singer to want to get out of the mess he sings about in the opening verse and run to anywhere just to see if its better than what he and wendy have experienced so far in their lives. I have no problem with his voice being gravelly as it is, I think that adds to the blue collar woes and how it toughens one. I would like to put in a vote for the song: Smoke from a distant fire by Sanford Townsend band. Thanks SalvoG
Welcome to the Bruce Springsteen world. Jungleland next off the same album would be the way to go for you.
I've seen him in concert a few times. Very, very energetic and entertaining. One of the times I was in our company's loge in Cleveland. His side stage was about 5 feet away. He came down that way a couple of times.
Dude ... "the Boss" ... got that nickname .. for good reasons .. this is yet another fine wabbit hole you got yourself into .... enjoy .. ima loving it // Rock on Sal
Personally, I want to hear the conversation on the decision to have an Xylophone in this song. "It sounds pretty kick-ass, but do you know what will really take it over the top and complete the sound? We NEED an xylophone, man!"
John Cafferty & The Beaver Brown Band - On the Dark Side. Real good singing and playing similar style to Bruce Springsteen. Its the group that sing all the songs in Eddie and the Cruisers
When this came out I was listening to KISS and AC/DC so I missed out on it. I didn't hear this song until the 80's when I had gotten into New Wave and Synth Pop and Frankie Goes to Holllywood covered this on their Welcome to the Pleasure Dome album. I loved it and had no idea that it was a cover. It would be another couple of years before Bruce got on my radar with his Brilliant Disguise album and I would eventually make the Born to Run connection and it was a beautiful thing. It still is.
Springsteen is definitely an American rock icon! So many amazing songs.
I’ve seen Bruce and the E Street Band a couple of times, and the energy was always through the roof. They worked so hard and had so much fun on stage - sweatiest time ever. There’s a concert video of Rosalita that captures the excitement and the enthusiasm of the band, that would be a good one to watch. Loved your reaction, particularly when Clarence started to wail. Peace …
I have see the greats in concert. Stones, Zeppelin, Yes, Bowie, Rod Stewart, etc. My best friend from Jersey, took to see Bruce, I probably new 2 lyrics to his songs, not a big fan. BEST LIVE ROCK CONCERT I'VE EVERY BEEN TOO. Hands down. Pure Rock and Roll being played and sung for the fans.
The last time I saw Bruce was in 2009, less than two years before the big man, Clarence Clemons died. But that night they did Jungleland and Clarence gave me chills that will be with me forever as his sax cut through that beautiful summer night. The album version is iconic, but this live version was just dripping with emotion. He was already having health problems and probably knew there wouldn't be many more times that he would get to do that beautiful solo. His nephew Jake took his place, and he has done a great job filling those big shoes. But there is only one Clarence, not just his talent, but just his presence and his love of life and music. He was a giant of a man, both literally and figuratively.
Bruce Springsteen is a legend. While successful earlier, he experienced a career resurgence in the '80s with "Born in the USA," a song/album about the failure of the American Dream that has since been co-opted as a pro-America anthem by dozens of politicians who haven't listened to the lyrics. That album had several hit singles, including the title song, I'm on Fire, Dancing in the Dark, Glory Days, Cover Me, and it made him an '80s icon. If Madonna made teen girls want to dress up like punk brides, Bruce made all the boys want to be sweaty headband guys with jeans and sleeveless flannel shirts.
I’m not a huge Springsteen fan, but I believe this song captures that teen angst where you’re searching for something you can’t put your finger on. The feeling is timeless. Love your reactions b t w. Lol.

I have a love/hate relationship with him. He has made some of the best damn songs I ever heard but everytime I heard him talking he is not a fellow I like. I also think a lot of his songs would have been better with someone who could sing doing the vocals.

@@impudentdomain, I disagree, Bruce has always written of the regular man and the struggles they face. A “polished” voice would take away that dynamic. His voice is perfect for his music and can’t imagine anyone else singing it. I’ve never heard a cover of any of his songs that was better or even equally to. How I hate all the pop songs with a great voice that is just unmoving. Many rock artist lack the great voice but their music effect you at a much deeper level.

This whole album is spectacular. I've been listening to it since it was first released. His voice is the perfect vessel for the angst, fear, and anger reflected throughout the album.
You were looking at Clarence Clemons, "The Big Man". He was integral to the sound. He unfortunately died in 2011, at 69 years of age.
In my opinion he, along with JC Mellencamp filled a void of true American artists that the country needed at the time...and nobody has mentioned that his video was the first time we laid eyes on Courtney Cox. She was pulled from the crowd to dance onstage!!!
Clarence was Bruce's beloved side man for decades. He passed away a couple of years back. RIP
"Born to Run" is the theme song of rock & roll itself--Bruce's heartrending vocal is as great as Clarence's sax solo is one of the greatest sax solos in the history of the instrument--and the album is the greatest rock & roll album ever made. Rollingstone's ratings be damned.
Happy you got to Bruce. Whatever style you want Bruce has something for you, from country style to Dylanesque wordplay, anthems, acoustic, jazzy, yep about anything.
Bruce Springsteen was a whole vibe. Lots of guys started to dress like him. A few years later George Michael would bring the look home in his video "Faith". In NYC at the time a radio station would play "Bruce Juice" to get people going.
Bruce is a storyteller known for his amazing lyrics. And simple but powerful and often energizing music. As you see here. He is often put up there right next to Dylan. I like to call his style NJ Americana. He sings about the "everyday mans" life. Factories, racing cars in the street, being lower middle class, strikes and average type girls. And H.S. sweatheart type of love that often sours some as you age. By average, I mean girls you would meet in small NJ towns and take to a bar or a carnival on a date. Many of his songs to me have a "Days gone Past" vibe to them. The song Glory Days is a perfect example of what I mean. It's on his Born in the USA album. Which is his biggest album and has like 12 hits on it. The album is about his pride for being an American. Warts and all, without being insulting to anyone else. It came out, I think, in 1984 when it was popular for the world to be down on America. His drummer Max Wienberg had a long-time gig as the drummer on the tonight show while he was in the band. His guitar player, Little Steven Van Zandt, the dude always wearing a bandana, had a fairly major role on the Sopranos. He was in every season of the show and played one of Tony's Leutenants.
He has a singer/song writers voice. That rough rasp In contrast to the music is life. It is dynamic
Check out the live version from 1985. He has a great stage presence. The "wall of sound" refers to the production style of Phil Spector.

Jersey girl, here 👋
Everyone has the same reaction when Clarence drops it on the Sax, the man is a magician with lungs of real power.
I think around 1995, Rolling Stone said that Springsteen was the singer, outside of Dylan, who had done "the most with the least" in terms of his God-given vocal talent.
Clarence Clemons kissed my hand years ago while we were sitting on a piano bench in a bar back in the 80s. My favorite band of all time.
Next up : Born In The USA! *PLEASE*
I was a freshman in college when this LP was released. Rolling Stone magazine praised it like the second coming or something. The critics were falling all over each other to sing its praises. For that reason, I was rebellious and had contempt prior to investigation. As the years have passed, I have some to recognize it as the masterpiece it really is. It's one of my all time favorites.I wasn't really sophisticated enough to understand what he was trying to say, I get it now!
Also try " thunder road" on this album. I think it has one of the greatest set of opening lyrics, ever. I also like the lyrics in "Jungleland". Whole album is a must
Born to Run, the album and the song, have to be experienced live. From the opening harmonica of Thunder Road to the final primal scream of Jungleland, it’s an epic story. And live, it’s a totally different experience. Just saw the DC and Baltimore shows. The current set list mostly goes from Badlands to close the main set to Thunder Road to begin the encore. There’s an amazing piano, saxophone, and harmonica outro, a deep breath and a guitar change, a scream of 1,2 and Max hits the drums, Bruce hits the opening chords, the house lights come up, and everyone is suddenly chrome wheeled fuel injected, and even though we all know it’s the beginning of the end of the night, no one cares. Couldn’t talk for three days…
This seems right up your alley. Boss is great He has a great rabbit hole. His current covers are amazing, Clarence the sax player is incredible. My favorites from him are Tunnel of Love, Human Touch, freight train running through my brain and cannot think of the title
this and "hungry heart" are my 2 favourite bruce songs, not including the hit re-make of his song "blinded by the light" by manfred mann's earth band (my most favourite) and "because the night" by patti smith, which he shares songwriting credit.
Great reaction! I highly recommend the following songs: Thunder Road, Jungleland and the hidden gem, Meeting across the River. All are incredible. Thanks!
This was an excellent choice to begin your journey down the Springsteen rabbit hole.
Remember exactly where I was when I first heard this. The Boss has a massive catalog of hits to go into!! ❤
Springsteen’s music is not over produced which sounds great live, I would recommend the live video of this. I’ve been lucky enough to have seen some great bands from the 70s and 80s - Bruce is unequivocally the best of any in concert, not just because of the 3-1/2 hour shows but due to his deep catalogue of songs that can fill those concerts with great song after song. He is one of the very few artist of whom you buy an album and you get a true album without any clunkers. Listen to Born to Run, Darkness on the Edge of Town, The River, Born in the USA, Tunnel of Love, etc. all great albums and all excellent. A great writer and human being.
Yes, Bruuuuce! His concerts are amazing! Back in the day, 3-4 hour show!! Saw him in Philly! 🎉 Jersey girl is huge hit in our area 😊
In 1980 the New Jersey State Assembly passed a resolution naming "Born to Run" the "unofficial rock theme of our State's youth."
His first album and best!
Song of disaffected youth. Soundtrack of the teen years.
Seeing him Live in 3008 with Clarence Clemons on saxophone. Oh my…..❤
Living in New Jersey there's a good chance you'll run into Bruce somewhere. I've seen him a few times, I also saw him perform a few times at the Stone Pony in Asbury Park. This song is the unofficial anthem of the state of New Jersey.
Love this song, his rough voice is part of his appeal. Please react to more Bruce Springsteen
The sound is powerful, solid as a rock...but the lyrics! Lyrics, lyrics, lyrics! The man is America's Poet Laureate. Thanks for listening.
This was the rebirth of true rock and roll as all the critics raved about this all time great song and incredible album! Bruce had more of a rough and ready rock voice. More of a poet set to music! The BOSS takes over the stage during every concert! Bruce is not a pretty boy sound !
Seeing the live video is a must in order to get the full energy of the song.
The boss. One of the greatest. If you’d seen him live, you’d understand.
OK, so in the 70s, the newsmagazines Time and Newsweek were hugely popular. We got both at our house. The week Born to Run came out, Bruce was on the cover of BOTH magazines. This just never happened, maybe for a President or some huge world event, but not for an entertainer. Really was a pop culture moment and pretty much locked him into the minds of many of us.
I have always loved his use of the glockenspiel. Such a different sound. Another great Bruce song, a sombre ballad: The River.
Please pardon me if someone has mentioned this nugget in a previous comment. When the term, “wall of sound,” it is typically referring or inferring “The (actual) Wall of Sound” which was located in the Upstage club in Asbury Park, NJ. Anyone with a guitar or a little bit talent could ask management to go onstage and (if they had electric equipment, would just plug in to their system. Yes… it was quite literally a wall of sound. On St. Valentine’s Day in 1969, Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez was lookin’ for a lead singer for his band and heard about this thin, scruffy kid from Freehold. Vini knew where he’d be playing the next night, walked in and introduced himself and asked Bruce if he’d like to play in Vini’s band. Four or five days later they started paying gigs… and the rest is history. PS. I’m currently finishing the Authorized Biography of Vini “Mad Dog” Lopez. Can’t wait for folks to read it.
I don’t know if The Boss would approve of this analogy, but for me, listening to Born to Run is like a rock and roll roller coaster ride, flashing lights in your face, calliope sounds of the amusement park, salt air in your lungs and your heart dropping into your stomach on the downhill. Asbury Park on steroids.
If I'm to die happy this song has to be playing......................very very loud. No better driving song ever. Oh..... maybe live Highway Star. 🙂
The Boss will take you to church!! His concerts are legendary!! They can be up to 4 hours long!! Saint in the City, 10 Ave. Freeze Out or Rosalita are great choices IMHO!!😉 🤩
You are correct, he does have a rough voice. Very urban is the way I see it in my mind. Don't know what that means, but it means his voice to me.
That entire album ❤️
I was 16 in '79, and my first job was at Pizza Hut, where this song was played on the jukebox a dozen times or more a night. And yet, we couldn't wait to close up so we could crank the volume and play it again.
The sax player, Clarence Clemons, was about 15 years older than Springsteen and was, in agreement with his wife that it was time for him to give up the dream and get a real job. And then one day he came home with "Honey, I met this kid!" and the rest is history.
Everybody with me on this, just as loud as your speakers will go" "BBBRRRRUUUUUUCCCCCEEEEEEE!!!!!"
I noticed you fixated on the audio aspects of this track, but paid no attention to the lyrical aspect. I always thought of Springsteen as a "blue-collar poet" who wrote from the gritty sides of the human experience. I just don't think a velvety tenor voice like Paul Simon or Freddy Mercury could make those lyrics believable. 😇✌️
Springsteen's Masterpiece of the American Dream.
Yes, it was his breakthrough album, but the kicker was actually, this album was made with the record company basically telling him that he needed a hit or he very likely would be dropped. All he did was come up with an entire album of absolutely brilliant songs.
