It touches on a piece of American culture that is quite sensitive... My grandfather came from Arkansas, during the Depression, illegally hopping railroad, for a job picking grapes in California. He was almost beaten to death by railroad bulls for his efforts. So, the fictional character of Tom Joad is almost like your Robin Hood
Tom Joad was the main character in the book Grapes of Wrath written by John Steinbeck and published in 1939. It was about the Oklahoma dust bowl and the farmers who lost everything and their migration west looking for work. They end up in California hoping to get jobs picking grapes and anything else they could do for work. It was the time of the Great Depression.

Yes, Springsteen (as the song-writer) is drawing a direct link between the homelessness during the great depression and in modern times. This is compounded by his references to Woodie Guthrie during the intro, who wrote some of his best work during the great depression. I guess the other thing to know about this song is that Springsteen originally recorded it as acoustic folk.
I often think Bruce never seems to get the credit he deserves for being a fine guitarist.
The whole performance is incredible but man, when Tom Morello does the “siren” effect and then the over-under harmonic part, the whole song takes on a whole new life. The way those two parts perfectly fit in with the rest of the song and the lyrical themes is truly beautiful. I nearly cried the first time I heard it.
One of the greatest live performances I've seen. You should check Bruce's version of 'stayin alive' in brisbane 👍

That's an absolute banger too!! I heard Barry Gibb was there that night and was completely blown away by Bruce's cover version.
This is a Masterpiece. Originally The Ghost of Tom Joad was an acoustic song, then Rage Against the Machine did a cover of the song and they made the song in their own style but with the same lyrics. Then sometime in 2008 Bruce and Tom kind of found the time to perform together and they made a new version together which is called the Electric Version and thats the one they perform together, they first performed it in 2008 and started doing that song more often together, the one you watched was from 2009. They first performed it in 2008 with rehearsal and improvisation, the studio version that they did (the electric version) came after the live version, so they built the studio version around what they played and improvised live. 10:27 the story about this is, when Tom was in a garage rock band called Electric Sheep in the 80s Tom never cut his strings because he thought it looked cool, but he was shamed by his friends saying ''cut your damn strings what do you think you are, you think you're in the baddest band in town?'' and Tom was like ''I am definitely not in the baddest band in town'', so he cut his strings at that time. But years later in Rage Against the Machine, he was in the baddest band in town. And thats the same guitar he had with Rage for years. Great reaction

Very nice reaction! I like that you got what the song was about in its empathy of the poor. Bruce is known as the working class poet of America. One of the best examples of this along with this song is 'The River'. There's a lot of depth to this man's massive catalogue beyond the hits that you have already heard, something which seems to have been lost in his mainstream image these days. If you want to see Bruce do some decent solos, check out 'Prove It All Night' from Passaic 1978, and 'Because the night' from Houston 1978 also :)
As Bruce said in the intro,Tom Morello has a solo career recording and performing as The Night Watchman...The Road I Must Travel is a must listen. His This Land is Your Land wit Anti-Flag is pretty freaking amazing too.
Check out Prove It All Night live in Houston 1978 for some crazy Springsteen guitar playing! You won’t be disappointed!
I liked this reaction. Actual analysis and noticing all the cool stuff. Plus this performance deserves a fair few reactions its killer!!!
