British Public Information Films 1964 1979 featuring Charley!

Музыка

Some real nostalgia here with these British Public Information Films, often shown at night on the BBC
00:00
Army recruitment
00:33:21
Beware of Broken Glass
As part of a wider anti-litter message, this film addresses the problems of rubbish left on beaches.
01:04
Census
02:01
Charley says - Falling in water
In 1973 the incomprehensible pronouncements from a ginger cat named Charley warned children against strangers, matches, water safety and other everyday perils.
03:12
Charley - In the kitchen
03:50
Charley - Matches
04:20
Charley - Mummy should know
05:24
Charley - Strangers
06:24
Charley's tea party
07:14
Children and disused fridges
This public information film is concerned with the problem of children being suffocated in old fridges that, tempted by their playful imaginations, they want to climb into.
07:52
Children's heroes - Kevin Keegan
In 1976 the series entitled ‘Children's Heroes’ showed celebrities from Alvin Stardust to Kevin Keegan telling children how to cross the road using catchphrases like ‘Be smart, Be safe!’
08:24
Decimal Currency
February 15 1971 marked the official date the United Kingdom decimalised from its historic pounds, shillings and pence to the new system of 100 new pence to the pound.
09:25
How to Vote
As the cut-glass voice instructs, in the true spirit of Public Information Films, “Your vote is your business…”
10:28
Jobs for young girls
Highlighting the problem of girls leaving school without thinking about further education or training, this film’s message appears to be: don't be tempted by the short-term rewards of unskilled jobs, because a career will serve you better in the long run.
11:16
Joe & Petunia - Acceptance of the country code
Cartoon couple Joe and Petunia appeared in a number of films starting in the late 1960s.
12:18
Joe & Petunia - Coastguard
13:51
Keep Britain Tidy
Over the last 50 years the ‘Keep Britain Tidy’ campaign has encouraged the public to put rubbish in the bin.
14:22
Keep it to yourself
Made in 1968, this film features a young Roy Hudd as the shadowy spy-figure mischievously dropping litter.
15:11
Lonely Water
Warning children not to play near ‘dark and lonely’ water, a horror film style look and voiceover is used in this film to highlight the dangers.
An ominous sounding Donald Pleasance voices the ‘Spirit’ of the water, a Grim Reaper figure ready to bring death to ‘the show off’, the ‘fool’ and those ignoring no swimming signs.
16:40
Peach and Hammer
“You can’t argue with a car…” This film, like so many before and since, was commissioned to highlight the dangers of crossing a road.
17:12
Pedal Safety
Dating back to 1978, the same year that ‘Saturday Night Fever’ and ‘Grease’ hit the silver screen, the ‘Pedal Safety’ film encourages cyclists to wear something visible through a catchy song.
18:15
Play Safe- Frisbee / Electricity
Part of the ‘Play Safe’ campaign, ‘Frisbee’ was one of a number of films that used chilling electronic music and frightening sound effects to highlight the potentially fatal combinations of electricity pylons and kites, fishing rods and radio-controlled planes.
19:18
Rabies Outbreak
The British Isles has been free of rabies for many decades, but the disease still exists elsewhere in the world.
20:20
Splink - Jon Pertwee
‘SPLINK’ was a slogan aimed at improving road safety for children, and came a year after Dave Prowse had first played the Green Cross Man.
20:53
Switch off Something
In late 1973 the Conservative Government was locked in a dispute with coal miners over measures introduced to assist Britain's poorly performing economy.
21:13
Teenagers learn to swim
Released in 1972 this cartoon aimed at teenagers warns them to learn how to swim, or risk social embarrassment and failure to attract the opposite sex.
22:14
The Fatal Floor
“Polish a floor, put a rug on it, and you might as well set a man trap…” Like many of the featured public information films, ‘The Fatal Floor’ is an amusing short that could easily feature in a comedy sketch show.
22:47
Think Bike
Featuring well known sports presenter Jimmy Hill, ‘Think Bike’ encourages motorists to take extra care to look out for motorcyclists when pulling out from junctions.
23:33
Ice Cream Van
Tufty Fluffytail was born in 1953.
It was a hugely successful road safety campaign aimed at young children.
24:19
TV Licence
“Don’t get a fine, get a licence,” the authoritative voiceover man advises.
This public information film was designed to encourage evaders to pay up, or suffer the consequences.
24:36
Vandalism
Whether in the 1970s or the present day, vandalism is an illegal, anti-social activity that creates a negative impression of an area and contributes to people’s fear of crime.
25:35
Youngsters learn to swim
Featuring Rolf Harris as the voice of common sense, he advocates the benefits of teaching young children to swim because as he gently advises, "you know only too well what might happen".

I am alive today because of these warning films in the early snd late 1960s and they seem harsh, however...sadly, horrifically hard facts. My cousin was Gareth Thomas, he played Blake in Blakes Seven. He played the rabies victim too. I was not allowed to watch much more after the 1st episode as it was so graphic and frightening. Britain was very dangerous to children and dogs where thrown out for the day. I looked after them in the field. One bit me. She was taken and killed as she was rabid. I was luckily not injured as I had my Paddington thick coat on. She never bit me, she had caught rabies. And that is how bad rabies is. And the channel tunnel has caused it to become a health hazard. I also knew about not to cross the road, without looking once twice three times nor ever thinking that I was invincible. We had The fear of electricity and kite flying near pilons. There was a very frightening film about Strangers. My friend was taken by men, she survived. Some didn't. Beware of falling into dark water. Or jumping off a river bridge. Donald Pleasance made us all terrified of Monks! And electric railway lines....😮

2:01 My happy childhood started here. How fast time has flown by know I look back and remember old Britain as it used to be. Still had it's problems and major issues of course, but it's own identity remained in check and was protected. Today it's gone to the dogs, a broken Britain full of outsiders that only come for the rampant benefits on offer and to spread their division of hate while the Government and woke police forces stands by. Charley would never have guessed this laid in wait 50 years on.
