I’m from Ohio too and I agree I’m sure if they could have them come out to the game they would,I helped build the children’s hospital here in Columbus and the OSU medical center is on campus but children’s hospital is not close enough for something like this I only had to deal with a surgery that my youngest son had to have when he was 3 but it was done in a day but what they do for kids is amazing

I would contend this isn't an "Iowa Tradition," but something that I would call simply a "Human Tradition." I'm so thankful for every visiting team, fan, ref, anyone who isn't wearing black and gold, who joins in because it's not about "Iowa." at that point. It's about kids who should NEVER have to fight that kind of battle. It's about KIDS. THEY deserve to be loved and shown it by everyone, regardless of school colors.

The Iowa Wave quickly became one of the greatest sports traditions, deservingly so.

As a lifelong Hawkeye fan, I couldn't be prouder of this tradition. One thing Tom didn't directly comment about was how enthusiastic the opposing players and coaches are in participating in The Wave. The Wave takes place at the end of the 1st quarter of the game. Because of how the opposing teams sideline is positioned, they have to go out to the middle of the field to be seen by the kids. That sideline is always empty, and the fans that the team brought with them are just as proud to be a part of The Wave, as anyone else.

Don't sweat the emotions, my dude, there is nothing wrong or "unmanly" about empathy and compassion for your fellow Human. This is, without doubt, one of the best new traditions in College Football.

This tradition moves me. Thank you for showcasing this. I’m so PROUD to be an Iowan. No matter if home or away in person or on TV. We always wave at the end of the 1st quarter.

Kabir, you’re my stadium full of fans, waving. In October 2020 (almost a year ago) I was diagnosed with Stage 4 colorectal cancer. Since then, I’ve undergone 6 rounds of chemo, 30 rounds of radiation, and most recently a surgery. Although the main tumor has been removed, I have smaller tumors that spread to my lungs. In two days, I restart chemo in a bid to shrink or destroy those lung tumors. Through it all, KZread has been an escape for me. Your channel, specifically, is one of my favorites… I catch all of your videos. I think we share similar interests, based on what you react to, and I love your approach. Keep up the good work.

Eugene, I am sending a wave (and prayers) to you right now. Know that while you're going through this hard time, you have more people standing with you than you'll ever know or meet.

As an Iowan, this makes my heart swell with pride. Kabir, you really should look up Coach Ed Thomas, and the Parkersburg, Iowa EF5 tornado of May 25, 2008.

Also I think one of the most heartwarming things I saw was at a game I came back to a few years ago. Before kickoff iowa would honor whats called a "kid captain", usually a kid who overcame a serious illness at that hospital. One of the things they said when announcing him is that "last year he was watching you wave to him, now here he is right here at Kinnick (the stadium) completely cancer free". Another awesome thing about this tradition is that its never exclusive to Hawkeye fans. We get opposing fans and players joining in too.

This isn’t the best new tradition. This is the best tradition in college football

Born and raised in Iowa. Our daughter graduated from Iowa State so we are naturally Cyclone fans. But we are so proud of the Hawkeyes for showing America what being an Iowan is about. It's called "Iowa nice" and we try to live that motto. Very classy move by the U of Iowa.

I was working for the University of Iowa when this tradition was created. I’ve only been able to go to one game but the most amazing moment of that game was at the end of the first quarter…getting to participate in that wave. The emotions that overwhelmed me, the reverence of the crowd as we all participated in it. I don’t live in Iowa anymore, but I miss the atmosphere of family and togetherness that campus and city has. And every season on game day I sit watching my tv and participating in that wave even though they can’t see me. And every time I’m brought back to that day when I got to be in that stadium and participate and the emotions “wave” over me once again. I love that school.

It's OK to be emotional during this video. The Iowa Wave has become the very best college football tradition. Just a totally cool story! Now, not only are all the Iowa fans and players waving at the kids, but all the players on the visiting teams and their fans in the stands do as well.

If Tom Rinaldi is doing a story you are more than likely going to cry.

Daxon Phippen's dad was a colleague of mine in the Army Reserve. It was a pretty scary time for them, but I'm happy to report he is fully recovered. He is a member of the Latter Day Saints church and is conducting his missionary time, which is an important rite of passage for those of the LDS faith. The state of Iowa gets some guff for being rural and traditional, but the results speak for themselves.

I saw this on ESPN when it first aired and cried my way through it. Blessings to you for keeping it real and in the moment.

This is such a short but powerful video

The reason this is a new tradition is that the children's hospital is new. I live in town and can see the stadium & hospital from my house. The hospital has tremendous scientific & research facilities, but also treats the patients and families holistically. I've been in Iowa over 10 years and have always been impressed by the kindness and generosity of Iowans.

Wow! I had not heard of this! I am a Cancer survivor so I know how much this means to someone battling for their life. I also lost 2 babies, one due to my Cancer, so I know the coach’s pain. What a wonderful way for them to honor everyone. May everyone at Children’s find health and peace.

That part always gets me to. Usually such a stoic man and to see the pain on his face, heart-breaking.

I'm a 61 year old grumpy old man from Iowa and I still shed tears every time I watch this.

I am a member of this group, and I initially thought this was something sponsored by the school. But once I learned we were the ones pushing it, I couldn't have shared it, supported it, and cried watching it enough. My dream was to get to wave with my mom, who was an Iowa alumni, but she passed the year we were going to go together and she show me around. But next season I'm finally going to suck up my tears and take my family because it's time we not just wave in my mom's memory, but more importantly, even she would have said, wave to those who fight a battle harder than any game there is! Welcome to our family Kabir. I'm blessed to have this video suggested on my page, and I cried again watching it. And I will never stop. Tears of happiness, sadness, joy, and ultimately, the ability to show kids we all can be vulnerable. As the movie quote went in Field of Dreams "Is this Heaven - No, it's Iowa - I could have sworn it was Heaven."

Crazy when you're there participating, you almost completely forget you are there for a football game. To see all those kids and their families waving back is pretty awesome. Even the local high schools playing in kinnick took part on the wave.

This was so inspiring and heartbreaking at the same time. I admire you, your feelings were palpable, it's rare to see in our fellow humans.

I am a loyal Hawkeye fan being born and raised in Iowa city. I think one of the neatest parts of the wave is that the football players and coaches, from both teams, and the refs all stop and wave as well. It is a great reminder for everyone about what is important in life!

Definitely the best tradition in College Football. The visiting teams often (always?) walk onto the field and wave as well. It is my understanding that the Minnesota Golden Gophers, one of Iowa's biggest rivals, were the first to do that, but I could be wrong.

Alec Erdmann Minnesota's coach made sure that everyone on the team and all of the coaches wave to the kids because he had gone through a situation with a child of his own years earlier, and it meant a LOT to him. Since then, the visiting teams as well as the referees face the top floor of the hospital and wave at the end of the first quarter. Even if they cut away for a commercial, they make sure we get to see it when they come back to the game. It gives me goosebumps just waving to my tv.

Tears and goosebumps at the end. Thank you for sharing this. My son was in NICU for 6 weeks, he was 9 weeks premature. I saw 1st hand so many little ones who were going to have to fight, not just then, but for their lifetimes. The smallest of gestures can be the greatest joy.

As I have told others (if you didn't hear it), opposing teams are just as big on the wave as the home crowd. They not visible from the hospital, so they have permission to go into the field between the 1st & 2nd quarters to join the wave. It's an awesome thing to see. I was born in Iowa, left at 7 yrs old. This makes me proud of my birth state.

I've been watching Hawkeye football since I was a kid, and I have NEVER seen Kirk Ferentz break down. During games or interviews, you only see this impassive, emotionless poker face, with the occasional outburst against a call. I've cursed him out for bad plays and give him a hard time, but damn if I don't see him a little differently now. Didn't know this video was out there, and it's so nice to see my home state get some love for once. Iowa's not perfect, but it's more than just corn. Thanks for the reaction!

This makes me proud to be an American knowing that there are so many who cares like this.

As an Iowan, 3rd generation Hawkeye fan, and a "Hawkeye mom", I can't tell you how proud I am of this tradition! It doesn't matter how many times I have stood in that stadium and waved, I get emotional every time😭 Ive also had the chance to visit the 12th floor of the children's hospital when my daughter worked there, and I got emotional then too. This tradition is so much more than football and is hands down the BEST tradition in all of college football💯

It’s the small gestures of humanity and compassion that hit the hardest.

As an Iowan my heart breaks and my tears fall for the families, friends and medical staff fighting so very hard for the lives of these precious children. At the same time, my heart swells with pride that this idea started and instantly became a tradition! I cry every single time I see it. I will always cry because those kids are the heroes! May the feelings behind Iowa Wave become the standard that we all share across the globe! The entrance that I use to go into for my own treatments is the one of the same entrances for the Children's hospital and I often see children and their parents heading in, and I always try to give a pleasant greeting to the parents or a little tease to the kids to get them to giggle or wave back at me! And when I see even a moment that they are reacting to something good, something beyond the illness, it also makes me feel better. We can all spread a little cheer by doing very small acts. It costs nothing to be kind and the payoff is worth everything! 💝

My daughter was born there and spent almost 120 days in the NICU. Watching the wave from the hospital is a whole other experience. The fact that they built the 12th floor for the kids to be able to watch the game speaks volumes of iowa. The whole tradition is amazing.

I'm a Florida Fan from Boston and can't think of a better, more beautiful tradition than the Iowa Wave.

I lost a fiancée and 7 month old daughter in a car crash 34 years ago this November 18th,it was quick and sudden,the pain may subside but the loss and emptiness never has for me.I couldn’t imagine watching your child fighting for their life everyday,this is a great thing for them,best tradition on sports.💯❤️

I'm from Iowa City and was working in a nearby hotel when they were building that hospital. Such a cool town. Go Hawks!

Those children have infinitely way more determination and courage than I do

You can’t get anymore polar opposites. One’s a game; the other is much more than a game.

The best part is that no matter what the game is like, the away team does it with all of us

I was working for the CM company that built this hospital (Gilbane) through out the entire project it was all about the kids. There are multiple videos on KZread that can be watched. Everyone thinks that construction workers are hard, rough and unfeeling. But when we raised the final beam into place the children were brought to the adjoining building that was across from the project to see it rise. All of the construction workers were there. After the beam was raised we all turned around and faced the children , took off our hard hat and waved to them because we were proud that we were involved. There was not one dry eye on the project. That in my eyes was where the first IOWA Wave came from from the men that made the difference.

The Ohio State fan here. I could watch this over and over. Brings tears to my eyes every single time!

It reminds you of just how fragile life really is, but then it also reminds you there is hope and miracles do happen.

I went to Iowa from 2008-2012 and during that time the Hawkeyes gave us 4 great seasons of football including one where I got to follow them all the way down to Miami to see them win the Orange Bowl(thats one of the biggest bowl games). But nothing makes me happier or more proud to be a Hawkeye than the Wave. Im just sad it wasnt started until after I finished school

……..and God bless the caregivers, parents and family members that are on this journey.

Iowa nice is a real thing. You should also look up Carson King. He’s a college student from iowa state who had a sign saying venmo me money for beer. He ended up getting a lot of money and ended up donating it all to the children’s hospital.

I am an Iowan. I go to Kinnick stadium to watch Iowa play as often as I can. Kirk has a real even temperament. Pretty stoic guy. When he loses it I do too. I’m a big tough guy and nothing usually upsets me, but when I get to wave at those families fighting just to live another day, I cry like a child. Best tradition I have ever had the privilege of participating in.

Wanted to tell you we sat with some Indiana football fans visiting Kinnick stadium to cheer for their team. A guy we had some banter with turned to wave and saw the families wave back, he burst into tears and started saying “hey they’re waving back! They are really waving back!” We were just humans and not rivals in that moment.

So cool you covered this! I was born and raised here, went to the University of Iowa and they're the team I follow. Loved seeing your reaction!

I'm a born & bread Iowan, TRUE HAWKEYE FAN, now living in Kansas. I still go outside and wave in that direction for every single 1st quarter from my back yard 1,000 miles away. IOWA STRONG!!!

Same, this is probably the first time I’ve cried in years.

My daughter was burned. She was in the burn unit. There is no place at the children's hospital for burn patients. So she was in the hospital next door. We went on a walk to the children's hospital ( they are connected) She got to stand where the kids stand for the wave. It was off season so nobody was down there but still very cool. I live in the state of Iowa and not a Hawkeye fan. I live in Ames and am a Cyclone fan. Huge in state rivals. That said I have the most respect for the Hawkeye fans and players for this.

Being a seat vendor for a company that has been contracted with Iowa for each homegame has been a great experience, but I never really paid much attention the first time there, I found out about the 1st quarter wave 2 weeks later on my second visit. It's awesome 👌 and heartwarming to be included in this 💯💯👋

Also, every time I've been working at Kinnick stadium, it's been packed 👋💯👍🤞

Kids suffering is heartbreaking. Unfair to say the least. Horror for the family.

I was in the stadium for the first wave and many times since. Always brings a smile and tears

Anything related to children will get me every single time. My son and I spent many, many hours and days at our local children's hospital, for the first 2 years of his life. Then we spent less time but still far more than my innocent baby ever should have. Thank God for those who care for our most innocent and most vulnerable gifts! Without a proper diagnosis and lifesaving surgery, I wouldn't have my son anymore. I would have lost him. He went misdiagnosed for the first 16 months of his life. He was then properly diagnosed with severe Laryngomalacia and a Stage 3 Laryngeal Cleft. (Did not learn what stage of a cleft he had until his surgery.) He was basically drowning in his own fluids for 16 months, as it was discovered that he was aspirating. I had to thicken every liquid he drank or ate. After his surgery at 23 months old, our hope was that he would be able to be weaned off of the thickener and be able to live a more normal life. And, that's exactly what happened. 'Thank you' never seems like it's enough. I mean, how do you thank someone for saving your child's life? So, I not only thanked them. I got more involved with a support group on Facebook called, 'Coping With Laryngomalacia' and it is a non-profit for parents of children with Laryngomalacia, Tracheomalacia or Bronchomalacia. (CWL is on every social media platform that I am aware of, as well) I was able to become a mentor to parents of newly diagnosed children, whose children were also misdiagnosed, etc. I wrote a blog post to share our story, in a nutshell. I wanted to give other parents hope. It's a difficult situation when you can't, 'fix' your child. When you have to put your faith in medical professionals. (That is even more difficult for those of us who didn't get answers right away or even within a few weeks or a few months of their child's life.) A majority of children with LM, TM or BM will be diagnosed within hours, days or a few months after being born. It took me 16 months to get someone to listen to me. Once a doctor really listened, things moved quite quickly and my son made it. My son survived. He is 12 years old now and thriving! I still mentor other parents and was even interviewed AT the hospital that saved my son, about our journey. It was played throughout my work and the rest of the Federal Government, as a way to humanize the charities we support with our annual program, the Combined Federal Campaign (CFC.) I was sharing our story to show how their donations to the hospital assist with parents and children. Apparently, a LOT of people were crying when they got through my written story and once they got to the video, the whole room was a mess of tears and emotion. This particular viewing was for the CFC big bosses who are basically the, 'Board' and that day, they were reviewing the stories and videos. I was so grateful to be asked to share my sons journey and will continue to do everything in my power to ensure no other child or parent goes through what my sweet Evan and I did. [Due to incredibly kind donors, whatever amount my private insurance didn't cover, (for any appointments, procedure, test, surgery, etc) ended up being covered at 100%, by the hospital. We're talking about roughly $60-80k out of pocket. AFTER insurance. It took SUCH a weight off my shoulders and allowed me to focus solely on my son and getting him better. Not be worried about medical bills, only caring for my baby.] That has been a significant part of my life's work, since I learned the actual cause behind my son's deteriorating health, from birth to age 2. Parents, we are our children's best advocates. Do not EVER let anyone, no matter what medical degree they have, think they know everything because EVERY child is different. (My son's Pediatrician from birth to 15 1/2 months was MY pediatrician. I trusted her. Wanna know why she didn't think it could be some kind of malacia? Because he didn't have failure to thrive. He didn't have ONE of the POSSIBLE symptoms so she chose not to even go down the road she should have, which would have been to get him referred to a Pediatric Otolaryngologist. (ENT- Ear Nose and Throat.) It may NOT have helped but she could've tried. She didn't and my son's ENT is actually who saved his life. I was FURIOUS. And as always, THANK YOU, Dr. Latz and Children's Mercy Hospital in Kansas City, Missouri! I am forever in your debt. You tried to prevent permanent lung damage, even after 16 months of aspirations. (When he wasn't properly diagnosed, he dealt with a constant cough, constant congestion, vomiting, stridor, blue spells, larynx would collapse and he would stop breathing, countless bouts of Bronchitis, Pneumonia and other lung infections. The only thing my son's first Pediatrician did was send him to a Pediatric Pulmonologist at 4 months. They diagnosed him with asthma, which was ridiculous because that's too young for that diagnosis anyway. She also ordered a Sweat Test, to test for Cystic Fibrosis. That week of waiting for the CF test result was greuling. Thankfully, that was negative. Found a new Pediatrician when Evan was right at 16 months and she sat with us and actually LISTENED. After she examined my son, listened to videos I had of him struggling to breathe, coughing, his VERY prominent Stridor, etc; she said she knew something was very wrong but said she knew exactly who could help us. That day, she got him into the Children's Hospital with the best ENT in our area. When we met with the ENT, she properly diagnosed him and it took less than a minute. She used a nasal scope to be able to peek at his airway within sedation and boom. I had my answer, a care plan as made and that day, I finally felt hopeful. That my son could survive this. Less than 5% of children diagnosed with Laryngomalacia (LM) need any type of surgical intervention. Surgical intervention is only performed when the severity of LM is life threatening. So sorry! I wrote a book. 🤦‍♀️ I could go on and on about this. It's just SO important to me. Sending all my love, support and prayers to any child and their parent(s) going through something so incredibly difficult!💙

I lived in Iowa city last year during all the protests about police. The protesters spray painted all sorts of cuss words and horrible things on the outside of the stadium and they did the same thing to the children’s hospital. So when the kids looked out their windows that’s what they saw during that time. It was so awful and infuriating.

That was beautiful, both the wave for those children and your reaction to it. We watch so much “bad stuff” on TV or online, that we forget that most people are good. Most people have never intentionally hurt anyone, most people are kind and want to help others. Most people care about others. We all broke w u !!!!!! My son actually turned 7yrs old in children's hospital in Boston. It is the most helpless feeling a parent can have. He'll be 27 this Halloween. Great full doesn't even come close to how I feel.

As an Iowan, who has been to many games with The Wave, I tear up every single time....

I was born in Ohio, so Script Ohio is a great tradition. I've been living in NW Fla since 1989 so Chief Osceola planting the flaming spear ar the 50 yd line is a great tradition. But the Iowa Wave is the BEST tradition!! Good on ya Kabir!! Great job with this one mate!!

It's nice that that's what people think of when they think of the university of Iowa now instead of the visitors pink locker room. Very touching ✌

May 2022 I just rewatched this and blubbered like a baby. My home state. So proud!!

Man, a tough, emotional thing to watch. But truly a beautiful thing. I sobbed watching this.

@@kabirconsiders No shame in that. It shows that your a man with a good heart.

I can deal with adults in hospitals and shit but kids should never have to fight for their lives against terminal illnesses and stuff.

I was a senior during the first wave and now becoming a mental health counselor I begin to cry during the wave. I just wish these kids nothing but the best for there physical and mental well being!!!!!!

This tradition has gotten to the point where even the opposing team and fans take part.

I have stage 3 non hodgkins lymphoma and have to go through a round of chemo and then stem cell treatment only once a month. But the pain is brutal and to think a child has to go through that pain i just push through and try and stay strong.

The University of Iowa is my Alma Mater and it is one of the best college in the world. I’m so proud of them and the fans.

Grew up in Fort Dodge Iowa, I can tell you living in many places after, Iowa is special, heartland, Iowa never leaves you.

I cried watch you cry, watching them cry. That video broke me, too. Beautiful, little strong sweethearts, putting on a brave face. The parents and the doctors, the nurses and the staff, the children and young teens must certainly feel the love and support from those fans!

Once again…TOP shelf reaction bro!!! Sports and music are 2 of the biggest unifiers in the world! Cheers from across the pond!! 🔥🔥💯💯🇺🇸🍻🇬🇧🇺🇸🍻🇬🇧

I've visited Iowa for a game. It is TRULY a moving experience to participate.

Being from Iowa and Hawkeye......Yes....We do care and support!

I have had many days just like you feel but try not to show a tear . For 29 years I transported people with disabilities to medical facilities and hospital discharges , all in a or needing a wheelchair .So I have just about seen everything and it is the kids that I had to hid the tear. So long time ago I learned no matter how shity my day has been I got nothing to complain about as someone always has a worst day than me.

I feel you Kabir! Had a few tears myself on this one. One of the purest traditions in college ball. Gonna recommended this tear jerker , “The first Medal of Honor ever recorded”

Iowa is not a direct rival with my school(Michigan State), but we're in the same conference and have both been pretty good over the last decade or so...so we've had some great games between the two of us. But I absolutely love this tradition at Iowa. Kudos to all of the people who thought of it and made it happen. I love that even when Iowa is playing away at Michigan State, all of the fans still participate in doing the wave at the end of the first quarter. Even though they're like 500 miles away and it can only be seen on TV. Its still a special moment. I do it from my living room.

As a life long iowa resident and fan, I agree with you 100%. And there have been some great football games in the last 10-15 years. But the one the ripped my heart out was that Big Ten championship game hsha

@@jeffburdick869 The hospital campus was always right across the street from the hospital and when they got the new children's hospital funded, the location was either there, or anywhere up to about 100 yards north of there. They realized the view from the top several floors would be among the best, in or out of the stadium. I am pretty sure they made allowances within the budget, so that there were common areas with good views of the field.

I'm from Eastern Iowa, and have taken part in the wave.
