I love my country. I don't love my country because we have great military power. As Yoda said, "Wars don't make one great". I don't love my country because the mere sight of the flag chokes me up. It's a piece of cloth. It's a symbol. Without context, that's all it is. I don't love my country because of my political affiliation. I am not a registered member of either party. I love my country, because time and time again, our greatest triumphs as a people, come on the heels of our greatest tragedies, failures, setbacks, and moments of embarrassment. We are a nation of Greater Fools. We are the people who bet on ourselves when any rational person would fold or compromise. We are relentlessly, maddeningly, unapologetically optimistic. I love my country. And that's why.

Fun fact, I was in boot camp for the US Air Force when this happened. We got woken up by screaming, yelling and cheering. The most unreal moment in my life.

I was a grunt Marine in the back of a C-17 on my way out of Afghanistan into Kyrgyzstan at the end of my first deployment. Incredible atmosphere in that plane when the captain announced the news to us.

9/11 I was in 4th grade. It was the first time I saw my dad cry. I remember coming home early from school to him putting up our flag over the driveway. When I asked him why all he could choke out was "a lot of people died today." That, on top of seeing tears in the eyes I instantly starting bawling before I even knew what happened. They got him on my 19th birthday!

I had to sign myself out of work and my son out of kindergarten. I asked him what happened. He said Washington blew up…I hugged them and cried.

You gotta understand the nuance of the President calling for a press conference that late at night. It's extremely rare, and is either something amazing or something terrible. So this shows what it was like at the game, but it doesn't show that this was nationwide. Cars were honking their horns in my neighborhood when Obama finally talked. It was surreal.

@@kabirconsiders Exactly. The U.S and the U.K have a very special relationship. Despite all the divides and differences in opinions we have always had each other’s backs. We established diplomatic relations in 1785, only 2 years after Great Britain recognized the U.S as our own country in 1783. Yes there’s been dark times like the war of 1812 but we’ve always recovered relations with one another. We are each other’s closest allies. When something serious affects one country it also affects the other. We’ve fought together brother by brother in many wars like both world wars despite the U.S late entry we supported the U.K with food and weapons. We made NATO together. We’ve fought together during the Korean war, and Afghanistan, and still to this day when it comes to global problems we consult one another. Our countries are very important to each other and we share a lot like a common langue even though it’s spoken a bit differently we’re still both English predominant speaking counties, we share media, and trade. Our countries are very alike and our friendship will most likely be eternal.

As a Phillies fan, I was watching the game trying to figure out what was going on too. I can only imagine what the players were thinking. Until they announced that he was killed it all clicked in and the Phillies/Mets rivalry meant nothing. We were all AMERICANS!!!!

@@connorcragin7803 If Biden did something of that magnitude, I would give him credit, despite my strong political disagreements. If I were old enough to be aware of what was going on, I would have been proud of Obama for at least a day, cheering alongside all of my fellow Americans.

It was also something that this game was two teams who come from two of the states directly affected. NY with the Twin Towers and PA with United 93. The country as a whole was directly affected, but I think there was probably an even more personal feeling for those in NY, VA, and PA (even though PA was not the intended target, but rather the result of courageous people not going down without a fight).

I am a paramedic so it was really emotional of fellow brother and sisters lost. May 1st myself and family we were at Disneyland and started hearing USA chants, asked a person of what is going on he said the news of "We got him". My wife and I looked on our phones and it was just utter shock and national pride.

Before the announcement they did a DNA TEST in a U.S. Military Lab in Afghanistan to make sure they had the right person.

They also had a member of the CIA's bin laden unit(a team of intelligence analysts that had been hunting him since 1998) on hand to identify him as.well, someone who had been staring as his face daily for over a decade at thar pont. one of the seals was able to get one of the children in the house to identify the man on the third flood as Bin Laden

Apparently when they neutralized Bin Laden, they had to make sure they had the right guy so one of the team guys had to lay next to him to make sure they got him. Bin Laden was 6’5 and the team guy was 6’4.

The chanting of USA will forever give me goose bumps . I was a sophomore in high school on 9/11. My school had almost 1,900 students. During passing time between classes the halls were completely silent. All we did that day was watch the news. I saw the second plane hit live on the news. The way America came together after 9/11 and looked out for each other and were so patriotic. Religion, political stance, gender, LBGTQ+, ethnicity did NOT matter. I miss those days I hope we can come together again like that. God Bless America. I was 17 when 9/11 happened , so much of my early adulthood was shaped by the actions of that day. For 10 years we had waited for some sort of justice. I was watching the game, and when they started chanting “USA, USA!”, I briefly changed to a news channel and found out. My girlfriend at the time had gone to bed, and I wasn’t sure if I should wake her up. I knew that she’d be furious if I didn’t let her know right away, so I took the chance. She was thrilled at hearing the news.

It was amazing.

My grandpa was in one of the towers the day before the attack & he was a block away when the attack happened. My aunt was a flight attendant on the East coast at the time. I still remember my dad calling my mom freaking out and asking her to call them and check on them. When I was watching that game & the news was broken I had this feeling I’ll never be able to explain. God Bless America 🇺🇸

My aunt was a flight attendant on an international flight that got routed to Canada. My dad was in crystal city & could feel the pentagon hit. I was a senior in high school in a military city. It was an insane day.

I was at that game in diamond club which is behind home plate with my wife, my best friend and his wife. I stayed til the end and was cheering U.S.A. with everyone else. Such an emotional time. I was so proud to be an American as I am every day. Especially that day.

The U.S. has this way of always having some sort of division going on within, but no matter what as soon as something that requires our National attention crops up all differences are right out the window even if temporarily and we start showing the "United" part.

9/11 has a big effect on me. I wasn’t even back living in the US when I heard the news on twitter. It was a sunny afternoon in the Philippines and I couldn’t believe the news I had read. I had never anticipated a President give a press conference before that time.

The feeling was one of relief... I held my 3 month old daughter when the towers fell, and my breath caught in my throat as I realized all the dangers I would never be able to protect her from. It was 10 years later, that 3 month old baby was now just weeks away from 10 years old, and I watched her sleep as I heard the news that we got him. And this night.... This night, I was finally able to exhale that breath that had caught all those years ago. I could close my eyes that night knowing I could rest a little easier. This is why I love my country. We may fight amongst ourselves like cats and dogs, embarrassing ourselves in front of the entire world, but we can come together against a common enemy and when we do, it's best to watch out and stay our of our way till we get things handled. Thanks for sharing!

I'll never forget that day. Hits especially close to home as it was my 4th birthday. It's so hard to try and think about celebrating my life, when so many lost theirs.

For you to see this, to understand this, is more than I could ever ask of someone. Thank you for feeling the feels and supporting our country whether you live here or not.

For awhile, there were videos on yt of the reaction from the military service academies. I remember the one from the Naval Academy, hundreds of midshipmen were in an outdoor courtyard, and it was announced he was killed by a SEAL team, they went nuts, so proud of their brothers in arms.

Growing up in America post 9/11 was crazy, especially in school. I remember how scary it was when our teachers told us that there were terrorists out there that would kill you for no apparent reason, and you seemingly can't traditionally fight them. Schools in the US usually have a moment of silence every year on 9/11, and the day is pretty somber. Elementary schools usually focus on educating the younger kids on what happened while watching videos on it. American kids also have to start learning about school shootings and participate in drills to know what to do in case of a school shooter, which was eerie because at the same time we were told that if your school gets shot up it's most likely going through be one of your own peers. Have you ever seen American PSAs on School Shooters? Pretty crazy that it's such an issue in our country while Europe and other countries don't have the same issue or at least as bad

Imagine being an 18 year old kid, 3 months into your military enlistment and suddenly your country is under attack. It was a weird time,I didn't know wtf to expect. I just wanted to be around airplanes lol. So strange looking back now and realizing just how much it changed your life.

I remember my entire neighborhood finding out at the same time, and I don’t even know how they all had so many fireworks on hand, but better than any 4th of July firework show I’ve seen.

10 years later I still get emotional thinking about that night.

I’ve watched this ESPN piece before, but it was a really interesting watch from your perspective. I love that it was the Mets playing that night; in the first games back after the attacks, then-catcher Mike Piazza hit a home run, and for the first time in weeks, New York had something to cheer about. I was a junior in college living six blocks from the White House on 9/11. I saw the Pentagon burning from the rooftop of my apartment building. There was a mad rush to get the hell out of the city, and afterwards, I’d never heard DC quiet like that before, and probably never will again. It was just this eerie, weighted silence. The next week, there were military personnel on every street corner. My now-wife and I had just left the DC metro area literally the day before the raid, and she woke me up to watch the announcement. Had we been there, we would have gone to the White House to celebrate. It was a sense of disbelief, joy, finality, and a prayer that perhaps the families of the 9/11 victims not only found some sort of vindication or peace or whatever they needed, and knew we’d never forgotten them. Very cool video. Thanks.

As an American who was very much personally affected by 9-11-2001, there was a sense of pride when he was killed, but mostly my feeling was "it's about time!" 10 years of searching in caves and he was in a compound right near their military school!" But also I felt relief knowing he was not gonna do anybody any more harm ever again.

I am surprised how emotional I got watching this. I was in the US military during 9/11, and on board the first US Carrier that responded after 9/11. Haven't seen this video before. After almost 20 years its still very sureal.

Presidential news conferences happen quite a bit. Ad-hoc or conferences not pre-announced are rare indeed. As an American and a life long NY Met fan I remember feeling pride, but also feeling saddened and very angry all over again. Just watching this I still feel that anger and sorrow for all of those lives lost. Yet, we can all look back on a time when this country felt and acted in concert. One great nation, indivisible. THAT part breaks my heart.

I remember both days very vividly. Had a very memorable and pivotal night in my life on May 1st, 2011, outside of this happening. Then this news was on the TV when my friend and I walked into his house from getting back from church.. It was pretty crazy. I'm currently 29. I was 8, and in the 4th grade on 9/11. I was 18 when this day took place.

That is a very intense rivalry. It is amazing to see them all happy together. Thank you!

I was at that game with coworkers. It was so crazy. I got a text to check the news on line. Next thing my whole section went quite. Then someone stated chanting USA. The players were bewildered at first. Truly amazing. I still have the ticket stub.

Feels like a different county back then compared to the one we live in just 10 years later.. makes me sad we went backwards since then.

When I heard the news, I felt relief. Not pride or satisfaction but relief. Like a pain I had felt for so long was finally gone.

Oh, you NEED to do Mike Piazza's homerun in the first game in New York after 9/11 - stadium went WILD - firefighters and first responders were at the game, etc. Single most memorable homerun in my lifetime.

In times like these, I love how people pull together. On 9/11, my parent's neighbor was touring France and was in Paris that day with her friend. Americans in France aren't always the easiest of tourist type relationships. But as she and her friend were waiting for their tour group, passers-by realized from their jovial behavior that they knew nothing of what had just transpired at home. The French people around them told them to call home immediately to hear the news from family. Afterwards they were able to share concerns and fears with one another. As flights were grounded and reopening airports was a nightmare, the women, like many other Americans were stranded there in France, but were taken in for several days by complete strangers, until they were able to secure passage home. Why can't we find some of that compassion now from our own people at home?

I was a senior in high school. The next morning everyone was so energetic. It just felt different.

I will never forget this day. I was studying in my University library and broke the news to everyone (did get some shhhh's at first). Ended up in tears doing shots of absinthe

I was 11 years old when the news that we got him broke, and I was sitting in the living room with my parents. My mom legitimately cried and we were so glad that he had been brought down that we were screaming and eyes glued on the TV.

I've never seen celebrations like this before or since. It was a very special day for us Americans. The level of national ecstasy and pride was palpable.

Edit: I was 12 when bin laden was killed, I don’t remember 9/11 but I have many friends whose families were affected. This moment really put a lot of things into perspective for me, I was a good kid but would hate/dislike people for stupid reasons. Events like this help you realize we are all humans, we are all constantly battling evil in our world and our lives... if we support one another and have pride in what we are as a collective we will be much better off

Great video and thank you for doing this. I'm the widow of a totally disabled Marine. On 9-11 the plane that crashed in PA went over our house. How do we know? We were near an AFB and it was restricted airspace. No one ever went over us no matter what the time. He had gone out to get brakes on my car so I could go to work in a little while. When he came home, he looked like a ghost and asked me if I had the news on yet. I hadn't. A minute later the phone rang and it was the VA wanting him to come in to the local VA hospital so that they could see how fit he would be so they would know what part he could play if all troops were called out. A very horrifying day. To say the least I was terrified. Thankfully he did not have to leave, but we both volunteered at the hospital to do whatever was needed for our soldiers.

For a guy that’s British almost getting emotional about this says a lot about how ppl not only in America but also around the world and how hard this hit the world

I had been home for 3 months from my deployment. I was upstairs the game was on in the background. I remember hearing the news and I ran down stairs and yelled at my dad who was also a vet. That we killed the bastard. And he was reading we turned on the tv and we celebrated and cried.

I remember my dad calling me out to the living room when the conference started and we hugged each other when we heard the news. Cars were honking and people were shooting guns in celebration. The whole neighborhood seemed to have the same idea and we were all outside just smiling and talking about it.

I don’t know about pride, but as a 12 yr old when OBL was killed feeling retribution. Weird feeling for a 12 yr old but here we are.

My dad and I used to watch the Phillies/Mets game every year together. I'm from Philly and a huge Phillies fan, and he's a New Yorker and a huge fan of the Mets. We would always let that be the one major day we'd let that team rivalry get to us. But that moment changed everything that night

I was serving in Iraq when this happened, we were mortared (bombed) 80 times in the following hours. We experienced 1 injury and 0 deaths. It was one of the defining moments of the rest of my life.

September 11, 2001. I was in high school. The school stayed open, through most of the teachers ended up not teaching that day. They just had the TV on the news, to the point where you were sick of hearing about it. Right before lunch I was at my locker and they evacuated the building. Someone had called in a bomb threat. I left the locker door wide open. When I got home I watched Dragonball Z.

I was in 7th grade. Our teachers did the same thing. We sat and watched the news all day. Being 12 years old even I understood that all hell was breaking loose and it was on.

I was a freshman in high school, and I remember just feeling numb, not knowing what was going to happen. We were in shock.

"That stadium looks packed." Yes, considering the relative short distance between NY & Philly, there were quite a few NY Mets fans in the stadium. Where 9/11 was the modern era's version of Pearl Harbor, May 1, 2011 was the equivalent to the 1980 Winter Olympics hockey game, the US vs USSR, in terms of the unity of national emotion throughout the country. That night, at that moment, there were no Phillies fans, there were no Mets fans, ... there were patriotic Americans. Yeah, I still get teary-eyed watching the video of that night. It was just ... incredible.

He was such a coward, and in the end didn’t even try to fight back. We would have never stopped until we did. I love my country and our soldiers. RIP Guys we got him ❤️🇺🇸

Had an AK and a plate carrier in his room, no round chambered and he chose to use his wife as cover. That shows you the type of individual we were dealing with there. Happy to send others in to die in their Jihad, but when the chips are down and it’s their turn to be martyr they puss out.

9/11 was an inside job and Bin Laden wasn't killed that day. It was all a show. Funny, how they never showed the video or his body. I remember the fake Osama videos that went up during the Bush years and early Obama years. He most likely died because he was on dialysis but you need an enemy to keep funding wars.

I remember that night so well. The shock, the good cry, then an overwhelming happiness and excitement!! God Bless The USA.....

I lived in DC on September 11, and I'm from New York. One of the "side effects" of leaving DC is I wasn't able to attend that party that May day. I was 1,400 miles away.

Absolutely, a really surreal night

I remember I was at my grandma’s with my parents and grandparents. Earlier in the day, we had heard rumors that Bin Laden had been hunted down and killed. Yet it was rumors and it was all over the news. It was then finally that Obama came out on National TV and said he was gone. I’m happily from New York and still live here. The energy throughout the town was just crazy. Neighbors cheering, some crying, but all were reacting to this. Everyone in my town lost somebody or had been directly impacted by 9/11. So the news definitely brought a form of closure.

How I wish we could turn back time 10 years and have that kind of unity again. Phils and Mets fans are the bitterest of rivals yet that night we were just happy to be together as Americans. RIP to all those who lost their lives and loved ones.

Sadly America has lost the patriotism I pray we find it again

It's much worse practically anywhere else in the world.. if you don't like what's going on in your community than step up and do something about it

I was in a lecture when our TA interrupted the professor and showed him. Our professor suddenly said “Okay everyone, this is not part of the lesson but it’s incredibly important news. Our boys just killed bin laden.” He was a vet of the Gulf War. Almost all of us jumped up and cheered when he pulled up the article to show us. Was a great day.

I live in a small town with a population of 2700, and I remember on that day, all 2700 people were out on the streets celebrating.

This was moving for me as well. There's a few videos post 9/11 about NY teams playing out of town and the fan reaction to their "enemy teams" are just awesome to see. I'd enjoy your perspective on them if you can find them.

I remember 9/11 well. I was in school at the library watching a kids show on pbs. ( it’s a basic cable channel) and all of a sudden during the show it switched to breaking news and it was the first tower on fire. Then all of a sudden we saw the second one hit. Honestly a lot of us didn’t know what was going on bc we were young. The teacher came running over and turned off the tv and then then a bunch of teachers gathered in the other room with the tv on. The closed down school and sent us all home bc I live about 2 hrs away from this. So many firemen and emts from around where I live didn’t even hesitate they were down there ASAP. It’s a horrible thing and around me there are a few places that actually have part of the towers there. It’s so sad

Iv watched it and my kids watched it and we sat and talked about for hours

September 12th 2001 - the last day America was truly United as one. Then we saw a little bit of unity when we got Bin Laden. Today America is torn and divided and it’s extremely saddening.

I remember crying so hard but filled with so much pride. Because in the days, weeks and months after 9/11 Americans were chanting USA USA USA, out of anger. On May 1st they were chanting it again for the same event, but filled with pride. It was an incredible feeling across the country. I am a very proud American. Because like the song says, We may have done a little fighting amongst ourselves, but you outside people best leave us alone.

I was 11 when we this happened and I remember it like it was yesterday. Even as a kid, I knew just how monumental and important this was. The patriotism in the air in the weeks following this was practically tangible.

It’s also worth mentioning that the Mets and Phillies HATE each other. They are on the same devision in the MLB, so they play each other often. (Like Manchester City and Manchester United levels of hatred). So to have their fans united in any fashion is amazing. And it’s nearly impossible to put it out of your mind, you just have to try and focus on the game. Bring the broadcasters in camera during a game is also very rare. The President giving and address that late at night is also very rare, so when we heard there was one coming everyone was going “What’s going on?”

I was at the chiefs vs giants game the first one after 9/11. I was scared. But I wasn't going to let them win. At least with me. This video still makes me choke up. You handled it brilliantly. Thank you for covering that. Now review something that doesn't make me ball like a baby

Big facts. Arrowhead was emotional that day. All of Arrowhead. I love KC, my home!

I remember that night, I love my country. 100% proud of President Obama and our brave soldiers. It's true in Philly we are very emotional when it comes to our sports teams and NY teams have been one of our biggest rivals but that didn't matter anymore in that moment..Finally justice for all victims of 9/11 and our country, It was beautiful.

I had been to the top of the World Trade Center & I remember just how Massive those towers were so when I saw the first plane hit the North tower I thought to myself "that is no Accident"! My worst fears were confirmed 20 minutes later when the second tower was hit. I have nothing but praise for our Military and for President Obama for keeping his promise to get Bin Laden.

I remember this day. I was in first grade. I was in bed, but heard the TV from down the hall. I went out to see what was going on and my parents were hugging and my mom was crying. They told me the news and I joined in on the hug. I was too young to truly understand how amazing that moment was, but I could feel the relief of everyone everywhere.

@@camdynbachman6976 it was truly my honor. The Taliban were so pissed they shot rockets at my plane when we came to land . we got out and decided to be stupid and mooned them on the airfield lol this was 2 days after his death

I remember i was in my apartment at the time and had cbs on tv. I had it muted but I looked up and thought it was weird for Obama to be giving a speech. I unmuted my tv and couldn’t believe it. I called my dad and mom and told them to turn on the tv immediately.

I was born September 9th 1998, I was too young to remember 9/11 but in school we knew what it was. In middle school my geography teacher told us how she was in the middle of a lecture when she was told “turn on the TV” so she did and she saw the news. She told us how the entire school that day went deathly quiet and just tried to process what happened. I attended that middle school in 2011 and I remember my teachers explaining to us what happened and why it was such an important moment for our history. I remember my teacher saying. “In a sense we just witnessed history being written.” That still blows me away.

When I was in the fourth grade. I saw the towers get hit from my classroom window. I live right across the Hudson river from NYC and in 2011 when I heard the news I was 18 about to turn 19 in New Mexico training for my deployment to Afghanistan. 🇺🇸

These days people would be telling us on social media why we should be ashamed of our country. God bless you guys on the ground that made this happen. This video is great.

this was a great day. the U.S. Naval Academy. Their reactions were insane. Watching it online. I was 27 days away from turning 13. The people coming together. Its something that hasn't happened since that day. Its a day we'll never forget. I still watch those videos. To remember those lost as well.

I was stationed on board the USS Carl Vinson on the day this happened as a Machinist Mate Fireman Apprentice. This is a day I'll never forget for the rest of my life

The Bay part is funny. He’s legit probably the only Canadian in this game. Maybe Cormier might of still be on the Phillies but it’s still funny.

Fun fact, a dude live tweeted the whole thing by accident from his house because he was up late working and the helicopter the Seals rode in one was loud.

@@kabirconsiders No, Osama bin Laden was hiding in Pakistan (with the apparent knowledge and blessing of many Pakistani government officials). The country borders Afghanistan, where he fled from, and the Taliban are actually from Pakistan originally; presumably, they got him out of Afghanistan, and used their contacts in Pakistan to set him up in a town there.

@@kabirconsiders I believe he was Pakistani. UBL's hideout was in Pakistan. He was legit, live, but thought some random Pakistani military was conducting loud, Helo ops in the middle of the night. Crazy.

This happened on the 9th inning where both teams tied 1 to 1. 9/11. It gave me chills all over my body and I just cried.

My parents (after 20+ years together) were married that day. They called it the greatest wedding present ever!

As an American I was online on my PS3 and in the middle of my game PlayStation put a message across my screen saying “we got bin laden” and as a kid even I knew how special it was I’ll never forget that day 💪🖤🔥

One of my earliest moments in my life is remembering the smell and the smog from the world trade centers from my yard about 15 miles away.

@@kabirconsiders no debris. I live just over the river in NJ but the smog and smell was absolutely disgusting. Smelt like burnt out electrical cords for weeks
