The guy with the chainsaw is Timber Joey! He upholds a tradition that started back in the 70's when his predecessor, Timber Jim, became the mascot for the original Portland Timbers during the NASL days. A slice is cut whenever a goal is scored, or when the keeper records a clean sheet. Players will sometimes keep the slices if it's a sort of milestone for them, but more often than not, the player will sign the piece and it'll get auctioned off for charity. I'll PM you some links to a few other videos so you can see how we do match day and where some of our traditions began. We do the game right here in Portland.

@@kabirconsiders I remember a match early in the 2015 season where Fanendo Adi of the Timbers had scored late in the match, just before stoppage tome. Timber Joey did his thing, only for Alan Gordon of the LA Galaxy to equalize moments later with all that still going on. 😂 My Galaxy normally don’t do well up there, so getting a point up there in front of the raucous Timbers Army supporters is a moment I always cherish.

If penalty drama is your thing, you ought to look into Orlando City's miracle last year against NYC FC. It not only had high drama, as all penalty situations have, but it was amongst the most bizarre endings of a sporting match of any kind that I've ever seen. If it had happened in the Prem, London would still be burning. Yes, I paraphrased The Clash. Any time one has the opportunity to cite Joe Strummer's influence, or is obliged to do so.

Love the MLS reactions. People laud the lower level leagues in England like the Championship. Well this isn't the top league in the world but it's Championship level and for what it is it can be very entertaining; largely because the salary cap means the playing field is more level since no team can afford to pay all the good players in the league. They have to be spread out. But the result is more teams on the same level.

I was there, the PK shootout rightly got so much attention people overlook how epic Max Uruti's goal was. So late in the game, he was in the box with a man covering him then he sneakily took a few steps back away and was wide open when that perfect cross came in. Bamm, a dagger in the heart for KC but such an explosive goal for Timbers fans. That was the first time the sold out stadium exploded with unhinged joy that night. Then it was on to the most historic shootout in MLS history, right in front of the Timbers Army. After the post game celebration I made eye contact with many fans as we slowly walked out of the stadium, we all smiled at each other and shook our heads. Unbelievable. There also the story of the original Timbers beating their arch rival Seattle Sounders in sudden death over time in 1975. They brought portable bleachers in to bring the capacity to 31,000, I watched the game from a bleacher seat, right on the field. but that's a story for another day. kzread.info/dash/bejne/faZro8aeaM6beto.html Thanks for the video.

3:47 Idk if anyone’s answered the question yet, but yes. Timber Joey is the teams mascot, and there’s always a huge tree log at Timber’s games since quality timber is one of Oregon’s biggest exports (hence the team name). Every time a Timbers player scores a goal at home, Joey cuts a wheel off of the log, and is given to that player at the end of the game as a trophy of sorts (and if the keeper has scored a shutout they are awarded a wheel as well). If the Timbers win that game, they make a big show at the end of having all the players who got a wheel posing for a photo op with their wheels. It’s quite the fun spectacle!

You really do! Portland has the closest thing to the English football fan experience in North America. You might want to plan to come on a weekend when the women’s side the Portland Thorns are also playing. They’re the best women’s football team in the NWSL (US equivalent of FA Women’s Super League). Same great atmosphere, averages 19K fans.

I should clarify though: they upset their next 3 teams played, but had to play 5 total matches; the Western conference semis & finals (basically like a quarterfinals & semfinals) were each 2-match aggregates. Didn’t “break physics”... I get why people think it is weird, because it is hitting the post at an angle and bounced straight to the other post. In order to bounce directly towards the opposite post it would need to hit the initial post directly in the middle of the inside of the post. So if you are a good pool player you understand what is actually happening and it doesn’t actually look weird at all. So if you shoot a pool ball at a rail at a 45 degree angle, it should bounce off that rail at around a 45 degree angle going away from the path that it came in at (give or take)... But, if you put a lot of english on it by hitting the ball on the far edge of the ball (left or right) while staying on the up/down center line of the ball, it will bounce off the rail at a 90 degree angle even tho it came into the rail at a 45 degree angle. It’s actually quite easy to do...
