These hands to the face rules were taken reaaallllyy seriously in MLS when VAR was implemented. I think they've softened up a bit since then, but at first people were getting sent off nearly every week for this stuff.

Common sense has more grounds now with hands to the face and players are doing it less nowadays too. Many of them were deserved but some (such as the ones on Roldan and Chara) are just extreme

I also think that when VAR was introduced the MLS used it like every other American sports league and followed the letter of the law to a “T” with no room for interpretation on replay but seeing how the rest of the world uses it they adjusted to allow referee judgement on the replay on hands to the face and other judgement calls

Roldan was pushed and his hand came to balance himself. There was no intent to hit his opponent whatsoever and rescinding it was correct. The difference between Roldan and Rubio’s (the next clip) was that Rubio was still trying to hit his opponent. Even if Rubio catches his opponent in the chest it’s still red card for violent conduct. Even if it wasn’t in the head he was still striking an opponent with excessive and unnecessaryforce

The problem with these types of replays is the slow motion. In slow motion everything can look deliberate but at regular speed it makes a lot of these calls a lot tougher to make.

I'm surprised nobody else commented this, but Roger Espinoza is known as "Red Card Roger". He has the most red cards in MLS history (just made it 12 this weekend). He also won the FA Cup with Wigan in his couple years in England (played the full game in the FA Cup Final vs Man City).

One that won't be on here but could have been an entire episode by itself was a match that has since come to be known as "The Red Card Wedding" between Seattle Sounders and Portland Timbers. It doesn't appear here as it was in U.S. Open Cup play (essentially the US version of the FA Cup) and not an official MLS match. The game ended 3-1 in overtime. But more importantly the Sounders were down to 7 men on the pitch at the final whistle. There were yellow and red cards galore throughout the match. Toss in an injury or two and the Sounders were on the verge of being forced to forfeit due to lack of players. The the iconic moment of the night happened. After receiving a red on a 2nd yellow for dissent after yet another terrible call by the inexperienced, and by this point in the match entirely overwhelmed referee, Clint Dempsey took the Ref's book from him and tore it into pieces tossing the pieces to the ground. The ref whistled him again and he picked up the remnants and tossed them into the air as he was escorted off the field. This not only resulted in Dempsey's ejection from the match (mandatory) but an additional two year ban from the competition (consistent with contact with the ref), captaincy of the US Men's National Team (Odd, but it was a USSF match so... sure), and a three MLS game ban (wait what?!?! This wasn't a league match). Being a US Soccer Federation match and not a League match the match bans should have been imposed on USMNT play, not MLS play. There are many examples of how one does not impact the other both before and after this event. Players serving league bans regularly participate in the USOC and players banned from USOC play play in the league all the time. However, in this case, the USMNT needed him available at that time to help qualify for the Gold Cup (and through that the World Cup) so this somewhat misplaced punishment was issued despite not being appropriate to the circumstances. This has become such an intregal part of the Sounders and Timbers rivalry that over two years after it happened a Sounders Podcast and a Timbers Podcast teamed up with a writer for Four Four Two and made an oral history of the night. They talk with players on both sides as well as the radio announcer for the match and one of the assistant referees from that match about the matter here: www.sounderatheart.com/2017/8/24/16200724/the-red-card-wedding-an-oral-history

Christian Roldan @ 13:40 deserved a yellow, but LAFC #20 deserved a straight red card for embellishment/unsportsmanlike conduct. Diego Rubio @15:04 and Henry both should have been sent off because if Rubio is being sent off for hands to the face/neck, then you have to send Henry off for hands to the back of Rubio's neck (if it's arguable, then it's close enough that a professional player should know that it will provoke a reaction as if it were hands to the face/neck, especially since Henry is hitting Rubio from behind where Rubio has no clue what more is coming).

My perspective is that anything which merits a personal foul in football (two of those and you're done), merits an immediate red in soccer. Another thing that bothers me is the way soccer players are allowed to scream and cuss at refs. Name any other sport and that's an immediate ejection. The refs don't help themselves by retreating from players, but still.

11:00 - 12:30 as a Union fan but a still impartial football fan, I think this red card to Fabián was ridiculous! Maybe a yellow, but where is Fabián supposed to land? Is he supposed to defy the laws of physics and gravity, fly over Russell? He didn’t even land full-weight on his right leg. In real speed, you can see he almost immediately lifts his right leg back up (slo-mo looks worse than it is).

  • @robro41

I wasn’t convinced it was red at first but seeing the driving down from his plant leg is what solidified a red for me. If he lands on Russel without driving into him it’s only a yellow but driving his leg into Russel put it over the top

I think VAR has done more good although there is definitely improvement to be made. Referees can’t see everything and even if they do see it sometimes they can’t see everything so another view of the worst plays is excellent when implemented correctly. And if something occurs off the ball it’s very difficult for referees to see everything. With VAR it also discourages anything ridiculous and cheap because you can’t get away with things now just because the refs are watching. Now with calls like offside that are too close to tell for certain with VAR, they should just let the ARs on the field call it and stick with it. Even with VAR sometimes the ARs still have the best view. I agree there should be adjustments to make it better but in my opinion it’s better that we have it

All these clips are from a recent season of Instant Replay, which is a show the MLS has to review referee calls from the previous week of play. The HUGE issue with this is the fact that the 2 guys who host are not referees and have very little knowledge of the laws of the game. Growing up as a 3rd generation referee, my dad always watched this show religiously with my brothers and myself back when Simon Borg was the host. But we stopped a couple weeks after these clowns took over as hosts. It went from being a great way to teach about our profession to just a couple of random fans spouting nonsense about stuff they clearly don't understand or care to learn about. So I hope you took that awful commentary with a grain of salt.
