Breaking down the (actual) cost of rebuilding a V8

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

Find out how much it costs in parts and labor to rebuild my Mustang's engine with a 5.0 stroker kit (so it can withstand 1000 horsepower). I also talk about how much power the Mustang is making and what's next for the build.

*addendum* * my labor costs are very likely on the high side since the shop that rebuilt my motor specializes in LS (this was their first 3v) * with respect to power, i think i (accidentally) lowered my compression ratio with the non-OEM ported heads (bigger chamber size) * at 4,500 feet i don't think there's enough air pressure for the stock heads to act as a restriction, possibly no benefit from ported heads until boost * the yOu sHoUld HavE CoYotE sWapPed iT folks are annoying, but they're not wrong * i am going to get this thing to 400whp before boosting

Wow first of all nice job sticking with the three valve I also have a three valve pro charge mustang stock internals for 485 RWHP .My question to you is did you consider buying a complete motor first that was already done versus having a shop do it

Man I’m not sure if e85 would be a viable option but I’m running e85 on my 3v and it gave it a kick and I’m already FBO just had to buy some 47Ib injectors and get 450 Walbro pump lol. Once I slap the hot rod cams I’ll for sure get my car on the dyno and see what it makes lol.

But I also forgot to say you should be able to turn up the RPM with the new cams that you plan on adding. I’m pretty sure the car should have a better top end as well since the motor is already stroked.

He mentions that his car has stock heads, stock cams, stock coil packs, stock cats, stock exhaust and tuned 60-70 lb injectors, dual 75 mm throttle body. Just wanted to mention this as an alternative to turbo charging. I believe the 3.2L LC Mammoth kit runs about $7K. Good Luck with your build and thanks for keeping everyone updated.

I use to be a long man or chevy man like your self all my life till 2002 when I try to by a new camaro and they told me the gm stop making the camaro because the corvette sales were dropping that's when I hated gm with passion at the time I was 23 years old I had a decent job enough to pay for a brand new camaro but the corvette was like 1200 bucks a month plus 300 insurance so I think gm is just thinking about them selfs and not there customers the next year I bought a new 2003 cobra and I been a Ford man ever since and I really love it on every single way I like the way Ford brings new technology to engineering motors and I don't like the way gm still has the same push rod engine for stupid prices but that's my mentality if I was the owner of a multi billion dollar company I would care or try to at least to see what my customers want to buy not just because something is not selling stop making that product the everyone's want just to sale an expensive product and force to sale it

The point of return style fuel systems is to control pressure spikes and drops. The fuel pressure sensor is relative to your manifold pressure. If it reads 5psi of boost, the ecu will try to maintain 55 psi. When in actuality it is at 60 psi. This variability can cause pressure spikes because the pulse width that that fuel pump gets changed on the fly to control pressures.

First video I have seen of your channel popped up in my recommended watched it all the way through and went to click your channel to watch some more content and sir I am hooked and now subbed looking forward to seeing what numbers you put down with that more aggressive cam. The 3v is one of my favorite motors the sound is so intoxicating cant go wrong with either path though 4.6 or 5.0. For me with the arrival Electric cars with mad hp and trq figures and 0-60 times I would much rather build an engine with more personality and tone than doing what gets the most horsepower as there will always be someone in a tesla and so on that will be faster than any reasonable street built ice car, even the base tesla model 3 accelerates faster than my buddies STI not to mention the performance version which does it in nearly 3.0seconds. Now there is nothing wrong with spending massive amounts of cash to build a high horsepower car, as long as it makes you happy.

Wow, really great summary, to the point vid. Excellent content, and I don’t even have a mustang or a car to rebuild a motor, and not considering a crate motor. But if I do, I now have a new appreciation for crate motor pricing.

I did this exact same rebuild for my 2007 mustang. This is a great video with good insight but do not waste the money unless you plan on installing forced induction also. Dont forget also that if you decide to do this for big HP you need a clutch, transmission, rear diff, axles, possibly a drive line. Luckily I did all my work myself so there was no labor costs except for the machine work, but I was into my build about $15k with EVERYTHING. I also recommend a return fuel system if you plan on the big HP numbers and especially if you want to run E85, E90, or E100, whatever your state has. I had twin 465 litre pumps and couldn't get over 700 whp with E85 because the fuel system could not support it. I did make 905whp on 110 race fuel. MMR is the place to go for modular motor parts.

Hey man, I've watched all your videos a few times and even used a snippet of your dyno run in one of my previous videos. Could you tell you me what transmission you ended up going with? I think I read you got a rebuilt 5-speed and it failed multiple times? Also what clutch did you go with and how do you like it? Thanks for watching man and it's badass you did all the work yourself 💪

@@Four_Eyes I used the stock Tremec 3650 but yes I had it fully built but it did fail on me 2 times before I took it out and went with a 5 speed TKO with face plated gears from liberty gears that claimed to withstand 1500 hp. Never had a problem with that one. I used the McLeod RXT twin disk clutch and that seemed to do fine, but I also sent it in and had them rebuild it every winter. With the big cam and clutch it became not as fun to drive in traffic because it would studder and shake at low speeds. I appreciate you watching and good luck with your videos, I enjoy watching them.

i would skip the ported heads, very expensive and unless you're shooting for like 1,000+ wheel horsepower, they're not necessary

I am down here in Phoenix Arizona. The dyno shop that did mine is called dynocomp in Scottsdale Arizona. The owner Richard when I was looking for a dyno shop interviewing multiple that is. One of the things that I liked the most about him was this. If you are looking to see a particular number on the dyno go someplace else. If you want maximum power out of your engine but reliable and trustworthy I'll do it. Because I guarantee you go to any other dyno shop after I've done my tune on your car they will get a higher number by leaning out and jacking with the timing to unsafe conditions. The thing with your heads definitely can be a thing. A lot of people forget that engines are air pumps air in air out. When it comes to doing this kind of stuff that you and I are doing you got to figure up your volumetric efficiency in short how efficient is each cylinder pulling in air and utilizing it. But I would really like to potentially talk to you on the phone about this stuff if you're interested. I don't know enough about this KZread communication because I know I don't want my contact information out for everybody and I'm sure you don't either but anyhow. If you don't want to because of too many weirdos out there. I get it. At the end of the day it's all good! And doing this kind of stuff is a lot of fun hell I just got done last weekend porting my throttle body. Which by the way collapsed my JLT air cleaner. Good luck In the regards to porting the heads I did port my heads I did a lot of research into it talking to guys that do porting that are willing to talk about it which is far and few between.

Great video.... I'm an LS owner. You just gave me sticker shock. I took stock 1998 LS1 and for $11K added a Vortech V3si supercharger from A&A Corvette and a 3.42 geared rear end from RPM transmissions... Didn't even add headers. Ended up with 472 WHP/440 TQ through the A4 auto trans. You have stunned me that 370 WHP cost $16,000.... I can appreciate your dedication!

Get that boost on there! Think we're all waiting for that! I'm digging this build as I want to do the same thing to a 3v they have much potential and when you put the cost of a new or used 5.0 you can pick up a 08' gt for 10k or less, put 10k into it with boost and be happy with it, or get a loan for 40k on a stock 5.0, but to each is there own I guess, I love the apr gt500 body kit that will work with a gt, minus a few parts and thats the look I like!
