Things every car guy should know about engines

Автокөліктер мен көлік құралдары

There are a lot of factors to consider when building a 1000+ horsepower engine: compression ratio, displacement, I vs H-beam connecting rods, what type of metal the rotating assembly is made of, fuel system, and other supporting upgrades and maintenance. In this video, I cover these topics in-depth as I pursue building one of the most powerful 4.6 Mustangs ever built.

I made a mistake at 5:39 where I talk about increasing cylinder diameter with a honing tool. While technically possible, it's a terrible approach as it'll take forever and will likely result in uneven cylinder walls. The cylinders need to be professionally bored and checked against one of the pistons (that will be installed) to ensure proper fitment/clearances.

Well what you said is true, there are some amazing honing machines out there now that do exactly what you said initially. You should look up some information and videos on the Sunnen and SV-10. It's a fully automated hone. It can detect cylinder board distortion and correct it itself leaving you with perfectly straight and round cylinders. It's amazing.

Just FYI, the honing tools that most shops have are for reconditioning the bores during a rebuild, not increasing displacement. They're basically just for getting the cross-hatch pattern back into the cylinder walls. Also for trans, the T56 Magnum is supposed to be a beast.

Twin turbo, Manley connecting rods and such. When I first got the car I wanted to coyote swap it, but after attending mustang week in myrtle beach SC for a couple years, I decided I want to build the 3v, because it’s so rare to see a built 3v even at an event all about mustangs. All you see is coyotes everywhere and every 4.6 is bone stock. I don’t want to just be another coyote car, I want something different and that’s why I want to build the 3v and I’m guessing it’s the same reason for most other people who want to build theirs too.

Been awhile since you’ve posted, love your car & build. Makes my close to stock Tightie Whitie so boring but its a driver. I want rear end gears & cams bad. But a new apartment & furniture took that out of the equation for this year. I think I’ve seen all of your videos but wondering if you’ve done axle gears & steering components? Keep up the good work & hope to see new stuff from you soon

I learned way too much drinking my morning coffee this morning thanks to you. Also, your fog lights have been flawless on the front of my GT, and have now seen the roads between Nashville and New Hampshire. They’re now learning the backroads of rural NH after moving back up here two weeks ago.

The problem is they're not trash talking the reliability, they're trash talking the pathetically low power output. I'm a ford guy myself, a new edge mustang owner at that, and I can definitely see why people would get upset at a v8 that gets destroyed by a V6 Nissan maxima.

Also a very different 4.6, the 3v 4.6 was very unreliable in comparison to the 2v that was in the crown vics and new edge Mustangs. 3v engines are notorious for blowing spark plugs.

@@chrishernandez2490 I get your point that they are very slow from the factory. Especially in todays standards. But modified they really aren't slow. 11s NA is possible. This out of a cheapo mustang gt. Not bad for the price point.

As always its worth waiting to see your next vid. Tons of facts. Im fixing to dyno my 3v for a nitrous build to go with all the routine mods. You hav just helped me to settle the question as to what my top hp goal should be on stock engine components. I'll rejoice with u whn u shut down the 3v haters once u hit 1000, but I hav to agree with them at the cost to get there seems futile. But, a $15,000 car with $20,000 power upgrades is still way cheaper than a $100,000 factory 700 hp option. Can't take the $ with u. I'm pulling for u. Go for it! Heck, I think some of us will even throw a bill your way to help.

Great narration……excellent videography……heavy engineering simplified…….and all in a compact informative video that is easy to watch without the wife bitchin’ at me for sitting glued to a you tube video for an hour. I’m happy to be a new subscriber and happier still that you are shutting up the Chevy guys with the magnificent development of the grocery getter 4.6. There are a lot of 4.6’s resting in wrecked vehicles in salvage yards……what you are proving is they do not deserve to be overlooked as an option for performance applications. Way to go. I’ll watch all your vids.

Also, a good way to skirt by if you can with a transmission that can handle less is to use a very good clutch, such as a triple disc carbon fiber clutch, it will help your transmission life and even increase what it can handle
