Perfect combination of explanations and visuals. The only small thing I noticed, as a Dragy addict myself, is I find that it's best to start at least 5mph (more if turbo) below the start point of the acceleration test, so the suspension and drivetrain can get all loaded up by the time the clock starts. This was just for scientific purposes so it would just be another variable here. If he was actually racing that would be a good idea. Also, if it's a turbo you can use the clutch to rev up and build boost and drop it to have boost when you start.

@@matthewmorgan582 Not really the case with a boosted car, it just needs to be at full acceleration before the trigger speed (aka fully spooled up). Trying to do funny things like clutch kick are just going to lead to inconsistency, and how hard you demolish the clutch don't have anything to do with metering how fast the car accelerates due to an increase in power.

This is a great explanation of the tuning process. Although gains aren't usually massive on a factory n/a motor, tuning out the dips and rough areas in the dyno graph can absolutely be felt while driving. It's not always about peak numbers.

Very good vid on where to start and why . Most people don’t know that the Reno area is at 4000-5000 feet of altitude and that car might break 500ft/lbs at sea level.

Beautiful car. Never would've thought a simple tuning would increase HP and Trq like that. Does this apply for just about any vehicle?

  • @THEHITWONDER

yes , the factories place limiters and restrictions on every car. tuning pretty much just gets rid of the limitations allowing for maximum air in/out which is pretty much what increases hp

Firstly, what a beautiful car! Secondly, that experiment is just perfect for these old engines which were programmed and assembled by some farmers who didn't really know what to do. Like giving these old horses some coke and I believe they enjoy it! Lastly, thanks for the explanations of what was done. Seems so simple and logical but best to let a pro do it, I guess.

Everybody likes to see max hp. But your dyno runs show just how important the entire rpm curve is. So much meat under those curves after the final tune. Peak numbers r for show, fat torque curves r for go.
